The Era of Ignorance

Posted: 03/14/2012 7:00 pm

Hey, I can't help it.

I have spent the past few days with a gigantic smile on my face, deriving the utmost pleasure from the travails of Rush Limbaugh -- the man who had me convinced for nearly 15 years that global warming was a hoax. Honestly, this stuff couldn't have happened to a nicer liar.

Limbaugh's slurs against Georgetown University Law Center student Sandra Fluke aren't the most offensive thing to fly out of his toxic mouth. His declaration that evangelical Christian climate scientist/Newt Gingrich scorn target Katharine Hayhoe was just a "climate babe" was arguably far more repulsive, since that insult precipitated a torrent of obscene hate mail against Hayhoe from the kindergarten-dropout wing of the GOP.

"El Rushbo" is on the downward spiral, even if he manages to survive this current controversy. After nearly 25 years of partisan bombast and shameless deception on issues such as climate change, it's clear that the talent God loaned Limbaugh is beginning to run out.

I wasted nearly 15 years of my life listening to Limbaugh, defending him against progressive criticism, laughing at jokes that weren't all that funny, supporting a man undeserving of support. I'm embarrassed to admit that it took me far too long to acknowledge Limbaugh's bigotry.

After I declared last year that I would no longer defend Limbaugh against allegations of bigotry (on the heels of his depiction of President Obama as a burglar on the cover of his August 2011 newsletter), I was contacted by a few readers who insisted that I must have heard racist rhetoric on Limbaugh's show prior to the early-2010s. I'm afraid that they're right.

I remember two broadcasts in particular, one in 2001 and the other in 2006, where Limbaugh went on lengthy, nasty rants against Oprah Winfrey and her influence on the American public. The rants were so sick, so unpleasant, so ugly, so vicious that I was forced to turn the radio dial. There was something, well, unbalanced about Limbaugh's attacks on Winfrey's success.

Why would Limbaugh attack Winfrey with such vigor? One would figure that Limbaugh would praise Winfrey as proof that America was not institutionally racist, that the American Dream was available to anyone who worked hard enough and had enough intelligence. Why was he attacking her as worthless and undeserving of tremendous wealth and prestige? I didn't want to admit it to myself at the time, but looking back, racial resentment had to have been a motivating factor. (He attacked her viciously again in 2010, after I had decided to stop listening to the show.)

I should have called out Limbaugh back then for his racially charged assaults on Winfrey. Instead, in the name of conservative solidarity, I kept my mouth shut, even going so far as to defend him against allegations of racism in articles written for Human Events Online in 2008 and 2009. I wish to apologize for writing those two pieces, as well as for not realizing just how much of a schmuck Limbaugh really was all along.

Regardless of the outcome of this current controversy, history will remember Rush Limbaugh as the man who murdered conservatism, the man who made the American right cheap and chintzy and sleazy and scummy, the man who destroyed what William F. Buckley, Russell Kirk, Whittaker Chambers and so many other men and women worked so hard to build.

I still remember listening to Limbaugh's show on Feb. 27, 2008, the day Buckley passed away, and hearing Limbaugh describe the number of emails he had received from folks who declared that he was the rightful heir to Buckley's conservative throne. One wonders what the folks who wrote those emails are thinking now: While Buckley could engage in some dicey rhetoric himself, it's impossible to envision him fantasizing about watching sex tapes.

Today, there are only two high-quality national talk radio hosts: Progressive Radio Network's Betsy Rosenberg (full disclosure: I have had the honor of joining Rosenberg in interviewing Hayhoe and other prominent environmental figures) and Michael Smerconish. Rosenberg and Smerconish emphasize civility, reason, honesty and intellect -- qualities that haven't manifested themselves on the Limbaugh program in years, if ever. If it were up to me, Limbaugh would be banished to the hinterlands and Rosenberg and Smerconish would be promoted as the future of talk radio. They're so much better than the past.

I still remember my favorite Rush Limbaugh program. It was in early December, 2007, right after the Black Friday post-thanksgiving shopping orgy, traditionally the start of the Christmas season. The shopping was robust, but market analysts were worried: people's shopping was cautious, seeming to suggest a lack of consumer confidence. Rush was livid! Throwing in lots of references to "the drive-by media" and other such nonsense, he pounded home the point: The shopping was heavy! How dare people try to think! "Don't be alarmed folks!" he proclaimed. "The economy's fine!"

The paritcular irony here being that most of the money being spent was being sent back to China and not helping the US economy. It's puzzling that increasing our spending on gas from mid-east considered bad but increasing our spending on stuff from China is considered good.

Don't get too moist-eyed thinking kind thoughts about WFB, Jr.: I subscribed to his magazine for many years, and he never stopped running those classified ads for replicas of "Preston Brooks' cane" (the cane used by Rep. Brooks in his cowardly 1856 attack on Sen. Charles Sumner). Buckley's publication had wealthy anonymous supporters who kept the magazine afloat (as he would announce each year after his fund-raising appeals) so did he tolerate those ads because he was desperate to save NR?
It is especially ironic that Buckley himself seems to have been caned while at school in England, a story often told. Sumner, of course, was nearly killed.

Mr. Tucker,

You wrote: "the man who destroyed what William F. Buckley, Russell Kirk, Whittaker Chambers and so many other men and women worked so hard to build."

I do not think it's accurate to list Whittaker Chambers (my grandfather) among the likes of Bill Buckley and Russell Kirk. While he did align with conservatives in the mid-1950s, he stayed with National Review for only two years, contributing only 14 articles in that period. He then resigned.

I would like to know how it is considered acceptable that this man's program is broadcast on Armed Services Radio when he spends the lion's share of his time eviscerating the Commander in Chief.

To me, this is a priority of the first order: get him off Armed Services Radio!

You are forgiven! It's never to late to accept scientific facts and civil discourse as the best approaches to dealing with the world. While never a fan of Rush, or the far right wing of the Republican party, as an Independent I have always voted for Republicans because of the perception that Democrats would take my guns, raise my taxes, and encourage freeloaders. Of course while counting on Republicans to do none of those things, I could rest easy that when it counted the Republicans could do the right thing for the environment, the budget, and the people when coaxed enough. I know now that most of these fears were mostly fostered by watching Fox News and spending to much time in, what Bill Mahr calls, the bubble. It is also now obvious that Republicans in general can no longer be counted on to suspend partisan politics for reason, scientific facts, or logic. The Republican party of 2012 is openly racist, sexist, anti-education, anti-science, unwilling to compromise on even the most simple matters, and utterly off the rails. This year for the first time in my life I will vote a straight Democratic ticket in the hopes that we will send a message to these right wing crackpots who deny climate change, wish to limit womens rights, and in general would like to take us back to the 19th century. God help us all if someone like Rick Santorum is elected President.

I think the important thing to remember is that Limbaugh is a performer. Someone is paying him big bucks to keep his Folks misinformed and full of Right Wing Talking Points to Echo everyday. This was not an accident. He served a purpose and once he is gone, another with a different style will take his place.

The Hard Core Right Wing does not give up just because they lost an expensive polo pony, they will simply saddle up the next one and get back out there.

Everyone made fun of the Clinton's for the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy but the facts do show that there is a coordinated effort by the Uber-Wealthy to take over our society for their own gain and they will do anything to make this happen. They will spend billions to make it happen, and they will stay the course for decades to to make this happen.

Since you're a self-confessed newby, I'll give you a pass for not mentioning Thom Hartman. I highly recommend listening to at least one of his shows. You won't find more civility elsewhere, nor will you find better reasoned and supported argument.

John Batchelor's radio program is GREAT. Reasoned, thoughtful analysis and interviews, civil discourse, you would really admire Batchelor if you heard his program. I encourage you to listen.

Mr. Tucker, thanks for taking a stand for civil, reasoned discourse on the radio. I appreciate this.

I also would encourage you to take a look at John Batchelor's radio program. He is AMAZING!! I anticipate he will quickly earn your respect.

So much vitriol for such a long time. I hope you are correct that his run is over, but I worry that another hate and lie spewing spokesman will replace him. With all the real problems facing the country today we need to have factual information and real discussions to find solutions. What I dislike the most about Limbaugh-like broadcasting is the division between Americans that is purposefully created, the "us" against "them" mentality. The demonizing of those who have opposing ideas and different backgrounds only makes it harder to come to some agreements on issues that need to be acted on so we can improve the lives of our fellow citizens.

Civility, reason, honesty and intellect are characteristics we should demand from our elected leaders as well.
If we applied grades based on civility, reason, honesty and intellect to the chattering class, how would you score folks like O'Reilly, Hannity, Maddow, L.O'Donnell, Cooper, etc?
05:05 AM on 03/15/2012
I'm not sure I believe anything you've written here. You actually sound much more like one of those idiots who call his show pretending to be a Republican than someone who "used to" believe in him. Two things especially lead me to suspect that it's not Limbaugh who is the liar. First, your quoting Keith Oberman ... the most unreliable source of the truth in the media today; even MSNBC couldn't handle his baseless attacks any longer. Second, your passion for AGW, especially in light of recent findings that are showing that human beings are having an insignificant impact on climate change. And, I haven't even mentioned your silence on the multitude of personal attacks on conservative women by left leaning bomb throwers, i.e. Maher and Oberman. Comments that make Limbaugh look like a boy scout. No, I strongly suspect that you've made it very clear who the liar is. Only fellow progressive fanatics will believe a word of what you've said here.

Are defending Rush by using the 'everyone else is doing it' argument that we all know is interesting but in most courts and folks who use rational thought is not a useful defense?
06:53 PM on 03/15/2012
Well, you know that argument never worked on Mom.
