Twitter Dies At Age 4

What's Your Reaction:

Twitter, social networking site and killer of human contact, has died today at four years-old. He is survived by Twitpic, Facebook, and even MySpace, who seemed genuinely pleased by the news.

The cause of death has been tentatively listed as "over capacity," though suspicion has fallen on the ill-tempered whale who first reported the death.

Twitter was born in 2006, and immediately flourished in the online world, despite having no education in spelling and grammar.

Services will be held this afternoon, with a eulogy delivered by Ashton Kutcher. You may check in on Foursquare, but will not be able to alert anyone.

"We're not sure how big the turnout will be," said a tearful Twitpic. "Sure, everyone knew Twitter. But I never met anyone who knew him well."

Twitter's acquaintances cited his behavior as erratic. Ebullient one day, sobbing the next - an all too common tale for those achieving too much success, too soon.

"He'd show up at my door in the middle of the night, covered in tears," Twitpic added. "But then he'd challenge me to arm wrestling contests two minutes later. The guy was all over the place."

Heaven just got 140 new characters.

Please retweet this, please, please. For the joy of tweeting. I love to get 10,000 tweets telling me the same thing. (Playing taps)

And none too soon. Those twits with their tweets deserve an early demise.

One can only hope.

As a long time member of the library community, I have been on line since early days--seems like forever. Exciting times. I have fond memories of dial-up, blue screeens, netcom, netscape, and thank heaven for Firfefox and Thunderbird. However, I draw the lne at twitter. I can tolerate youtube, am fed up with myspace, facebook and texting also (except when it involves photos or videos of grandchildren). But I absolutely abhor twitter. That's just one step too far. I don't need to know your daily activities in realtime or anytime. And don't you know what's out there is out there forever? Buncha dummies.

Call me a luddite. Call me a dinosaur. Call me cranky. Good old fashioned e-mail is good enough, and I manage to ignore those for days at a time. Oh, and you can call me on the phone anytime, why don'tch, leave me a msg. I'll get back to you when I can.

If I had to describe the Twitter users I've met, I'd say that they are those who enter a room full of people at a party and announce loudly how their digestion has been this morning on the loo. There may be exceptions, but I haven't met them.

You have to know someone to be on twitter. Strangers are not welcome there.

According to Twitter, the Huffington Post is dead at age... whatever age it is... I couldn't quite make out what Twitter was saying about the Huffington Post because it was 140 characters or less, and you can't really say much in that few characters. You can't write the great American novel, you can't write your autobiography or manifesto, and it isn't even long enough to write anything with any significant information content. You know, underneath this comment box on the Huffington Post, there are 6 boxes, each saying "Post to something", one of them saying "Post to Twitter". I don't think posting this to Twitter would work. I am way above 140 characters here. If my post were just "Twitter's not dead. You lie!" that MIGHT fit. MAYBE. That's probably still above 140 characters, if you use "fuzzy math". Not really. They should reduce the 140 character limit to a 4 character limit, so people just post 4-letter words. That might be more expressive of how people really feel. F-word! S-word! D-word! C-word! H-word! All of them 4 letters! But the A-word is only 3 characters and the B-word is 5 characters, so the 4-letter rule doesn't quite work... Maybe there should just be a dropdown list of swear words and you click on one and it posts it. That would work better, and express all appropriate feelings people might have towards Twitter quite succinctly, in my opinion.
