Dan Laffoley, the well known British biologist and ocean conservationist, leads the marine work of International Union for Conservation of Nature’s World Commission on Protected Areas. He is also the marine advisor in the Chief Scientist’s Team at Natural England in the UK. For over 20 years he has been at the forefront of efforts to develop marine protected area networks in the UK and Europe, and has helped lead and shape many of the key initiatives of the day. In recent years has taken on leadership of the global effort for the World Commission on Protected Areas to better protect and manage the ocean, strengthening the work of IUCN and its members around the world. This work increasingly involves major innovations such as Ocean in Google Earth, and now as lead technical advisor to Sylvia Earle’s TED Wish to establish more ‘hope spots’ for ocean recovery.
