In what is turning into the perfect storm for the US economy and for what I believe to be the most important presidential race of my lifetime, John McCain is stuck in the middle of all of it, utterly paralyzed as though he were reading a children's book to a classroom full of kids on 9/11. The metaphorical planes have hit Wall Street and the 2008 version of John McCain doesn't know whether to support President Bush, a modified bi-partisan compromise of Bush's proposal or the Republican contrarians who want no part of either of those options. In what has been described by many in the nation's capital as nothing more than election year "theater", McCain swooped in and gummed up the works while offering no leadership in an area that is, by his own admission, not his field of expertise. And after all of his posturing, he finally just committed late this morning to show up for this evening's debate. I guess the suspension of his campaign is over. Meanwhile his lipstick wearing pit bull remains on a short leash, posing for a few silly photo ops and maintaining a level of availability that would make J.D. Salinger look like an extrovert. One thing's for sure. The Bush era is over. Unlike the run-up to the war in Iraq, no one was going to follow his lead without question on the basis of "trust me" this time. So the decider is out of the decision-making business. Don't expect to see much of him anymore. And Dick Cheney? I'm guessing that the next him we see him is when he is lying in state. So tonight is John McCain's moment to take a position and stick to it. But what's become frighteningly clear is that John McCain is dangerously out of touch and that Sarah Palin has never been in touch. George Bush is officially a lame duck and McCain and Palin are both ducking for cover... which is pretty lame.
