Dr. Wharton’s career interests have always been focused on the role of zoos in wildlife conservation, as well as the scientific management and presentation of zoo animals. His current work with the Chicago Zoological Society’s Center for the Science of Animal Welfare is in integrating several sciences that include population genetics, behavioral endocrinology, nutrition research, behavioral husbandry, behavioral research, and veterinary science into “animal-directed" care strategies.
