How To: Mother's Day Breakfast in Bed

Many argue that breakfast is the best meal of the day. But if you're a mom and you're the one making that breakfast 90 percent of the time, it may lose its appeal. So, dads, help your children give mom the best homemade Mother's Day gift she could possibly ask for -- that's right, breakfast in bed. Here are some tips on how to ensure this operation is a success and not a disaster!

Make sure the tray you use is stable.
There's actually such a thing as a breakfast-in-bed serving tray, so you might want to consider investing in one. It's slightly raised so it can slide over the legs comfortably. As an extra measure of caution, you may even want to spread a tablecloth or old sheet on the bed before placing the tray down. And when it comes time to carry the tray in to mom, make it clear that this job belongs to dad.

Don't fill the cups up all the way.
This rule is especially important when dealing with coffee or tea because it's hot, but it applies to orange juice and other liquids too. A spilled drink is never fun. Handling the hot liquids is of course another surefire job for dad.

Pancake mix is not the enemy!
While hollandaise sauce is a wonderful treat, and a seven-layer breakfast burrito with homemade guacamole and salsa verde sounds delectable, these are not child-friendly choices. Go with something fun and easy to make, like pancakes! You can use a mix, which eliminates about five steps of measuring individual ingredients, and the kids can help mix the batter. They can even throw in special treats like blueberries or chocolate chips! When it comes to pancake flipping, or anything involving the stove for that matter, dad's in charge.

Make a card for mom.
Throw the kids some crayons and paper so they can make mom a Happy Mother's Day card. While they're at it, they can write out and decorate a menu explaining the morning meal.

Add flowers to the breakfast tray.
Pick some fresh ones from the garden and put together a little bouquet. This is a fun job for the kids to help out with, just make sure they stick within the limits of your garden when gathering flowers!

Clean up afterwards!
There's no easier way to spoil the perfect breakfast in bed than to leave a filthy mess in the kitchen for mom to clean up. Instead, clear her dishes when she's finished eating, and make her bed when she gets up. And make sure that the kitchen is spotless by the time she sees it. This is a job everyone can help with!

The meal, though it does play a starring role in breakfast in bed, is actually the just part of this endeavor. The most important part is wishing all mothers a Happy Mother's Day this May 12th!
