Much like pork belly, razor clams and the word "local" -- backyard chickens are trendy. Although my parents have had chickens for years, my expedition into this urban farm world at my house in Minneapolis has been within the trendy phase. Having gotten the chickens last spring, this winter is the first time I've had to figure out what to do with the birds during freezing spells. It turns out that chickens are tough, but their eggs are not. There have been many a frozen egg discovered, and I usually toss them into the snow (where they will no doubt come back to haunt me in the spring). With the eggs that did survive, they have been my sustenance over the winter. Too lazy to go to the grocery store? We've always got eggs.
