On Tuesday night, Hillary Clinton gathered her supporters in a literal concrete bunker several stories beneath the surface of the earth, with walls thick enough to block out all cellular reception and no TV monitors or any other medium of communication with the outside world. There, amid cheers of "Denver! Denver!" she congratulated her friend Senator Obama for having run a sporting race, proclaimed herself the rightful victor, and appealed to Americans young and old to pawn their video games and withdraw from their pension accounts (respectively) in order to keep her historic campaign squarely on track to the White House. Yet by the following evening, her aides announced the suspension of her campaign and her endorsement of Barack Obama.

Clinton's Tuesday night pseudo-victory speech was an attempt to extort concessions from the Obama campaign and the Democratic party, including a right of first refusal to the vice-presidential nomination, a pledge not to put any other woman on the ticket, and an indefinite grace period in which Clinton would keep her campaign formally intact and concede nothing.

The threat, in case her demands were not met, was clear: Clinton might not be able to win, but she could undermine the legitimacy of Obama's nomination, whip her supporters into a frenzy, and ensure John McCain's election. To make clear her assessment of the balance of power in the party and put the screws to Obama and the DNC, she recruited, of all people, Bob Johnson (yes, that Bob Johnson) and Lanny Davis (yes, that Lanny Davis) to attempt to seize control of Obama's vice-presidential selection, and tried to mobilize support on Capitol Hill to bolster that coup.

The Clintons' power play failed because --- like Gorbachev, Honecker, and Ceausescu before them --- they grossly miscalculated both the breadth and depth of their power. On Wednesday, Ed Rendell, whose machine delivered Pennsylvania to Clinton, told NY1 that "[t]here's no bargaining...You don't bargain with the Presidential nominee. Even if you're Hillary Clinton and you have 18 million votes, you don't bargain." Maxine Waters flipped her support to Obama, while Charlie Rangel announced that "[u]nless she has some good reasons-- which I can't think of-- I really think we ought to get on with endorsements [of Obama]." Hilary Rosen, one of Clinton's chief backers among Democratic insiders, switched to Obama and rebuked Clinton in sharp and unequivocal terms: "I am not a bargaining chip. I am a Democrat." That's what happened publicly. Just imagine what her remaining supporters told her in private as they scurried from a sinking ship.

On its own terms, the Clintons' last, failed power play is a fascinating story of cloak-and-dagger politics, but its real importance is what it portends for the campaign going forward. Clinton herself has not yet come to terms with the significance of the dissolution of her core of support; the AP reports that she is "exploring options to retain her delegates." MoDo reports that she "has told some Democrats recently that she wanted Obama to agree to allow a roll call vote...so that the delegates of states she won would cast the first ballot for her at the convention," apparently unaware, as the Economist puts it, that "[t]he convention is supposed to be a coronation, in this case of Mr Obama. It loses some of its impact if nearly half the states stand up and say they proudly support the next president of the United States...Hillary Clinton." In other words, she still thinks she can dictate terms.

If Obama takes the bait --- fortunately, the indications are that he will not --- and centers his strategy on placating the Harriet Christians of the world rather than expanding his appeal to independents and Republicans, he'll hand John McCain his best shot of winning.

I don't normally post same comments on other post but this is hard to resist. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Hillary had the opportune moment to make the speech of her life Tuesday as she concedes to Obama and pledge her support. But no, she needed time to consider options. What do I want? It's all about power and manipulation. Bad move. She had her chance and she blew it.

Obama is a leader, not a follower.

Her advisers misled her.

She should have seen the logical move as if she played chest with a baby.

No, she missed the move.

Mr. Koffler's reading is pretty much my own, and he has stated the case well; most of the Hillary cultists still don't grasp the meaning of the fact that on Wednesday, with the exception of Wasserman-Schultz, Hillary's own superdelegates were expressing outrage with her behavior (the statement from Rangel - one of Hillary's staunchest suppoprters, and strategically one of her most important, was a real 'smack down'). And part of this meaning is that she has now lost all influence on the Party and its convention, beyond the inevitable speech.
One final point - while it will take sometime bore this can be discussed reasonably, Hillary has done an enormous disservice for the women who have supporteed her, and for the cause of women in politics generally. She presented herself as the last hope for women in politics, rather than celebrating her campaign as inevitable manifestation of the success of gains for women everywhere - to the p[oint that some of her followers complain that there are no worthy female politicians anywhere - this in an an era where brilliant women politicians and pundits are surfacing in governor's masions, congress, party machinery, the press. Shame on Hillary!
Well, let the nightmare be over. Hillary supporters, your causes are now forwarded by the Party under Obama's leadership - are your causes important to you? or is it still "all about Hillary?" The train driving into the White House is now boarding. Please decide.

The good news is that ultimately a bad idea fails. The bad news is that the bad idea causes a lot of residual harm. The good news is that once a bad idea has proven its lack of merit, it'll be awhile before fresh fools are born anew to restore its false luster for another go around.

Hillary used all the bad ideas of the Republicans and lost. She lost for a clear reason, and her power is diminished. Like a bad child who must reconsider her ways, she needs some time out, and a lot of sound rebuke and advice.

If she listens she'll be a Senator. If she doesn't, she'll have to deal with her personal failures within the parameters of her own personal life.

Now, I understand why she was works so hard to be in public office.

After all these months of campaigning, after the lies, the pandering, the tricks and flip flops, the personal attacks, the kitchen sink strategy, is anyone surprised at this play. Hillary Clinton and her campaign deliberately held their rally in the basement of a school, to be free from all communication, so they wouldn't see the exact moment that Obama secured enough delegates to win the nomination, and she could continue with another one of her campaign speeches. She took a lot of heat from her supporters for this play, and it backfired bigtime. If you notice the temperment of Barack at his victory speech in Minnesota, he rarely smiled. He was stern, direct, and forceful, and underneath it all...pissed! Because on a night that was supposed to be his night, he had to watch that bullshit speech by Senator Clinton just before his.

Yeah I saw the picture of Michelle and Barack watching the Clinton speech it was heartbreaking to see the expression on their faces (I would say that Mischelle had anger in her eyes as well as disbelief). I have no respect left for Clinton and I will continue my letter writing camapign to encourage Sen. Obama against Clinton as VP she is disgusting.

I'm African American and I love Jewish and Muslim people. They are both part of the craddle of civilization.

Jewish people walked arm in arm with black people during the civil rights movement. Jewish movie directors were the first to include blacks in their films in a nonderogatory manner. A Jewish lawyer helped my mother escape domestic violence.

I recall that Wolf Blitzer on CNN tried to push the idea that there were tensions between blacks and Jews before the PA primary. And I knew Clinton was behind it because she was pretty much using fear and race to give herself an edge. Before she started the fearmongering and racebaiting, Obama was slightly ahead in the polls in PA. Shortly thereafter, Wolf Blitzer started talking about the tensions between the Jewish and African American communities.

What I have loved about Sen. Obama is that he never got down in the gutter with the Clinton campaign - NEVER. That's why I want him as my president. And please let's just say NO to Clinton being on the ticket.

As some one farther down put it, "this is so yesterday". And yet....? The pundit class will not know what to do. This was "bigger than O.J.". McCain is so completely not up to the task at hand. How will corporate media justify the millions they are paid to put ads up, if it is a pathetic race? Which it will be. Ho friggin hum. Who shall i vote for...? The warrior with the calm and noble heart? Or shall i vote for the guy who used to run the desert planet Dune? Shall i vote for the guy who knows what year it is...? Or... shall i vote for the guy who thinks we could still pull something big out and win in Nam.

if it is true that clinton wanted a pledge not to put another woman on the ticket, then this should prove to those who still defend her that for all the cries of "I'm fighting for women" she is full of it. this would prove that this isn't about fighting for women, this is about fighting for hillary. apparently she thinks she's the only woman who can do the job. what an ego. what a joke.

Hillary's campaign failed for two primary reasons.

1. The campaign failed to adequately plan for after Super Tuesday. Her strategy was short-term and ignored caucus states.

2. She turned nasty. That's what lost me, personally, and turned me to an Obama supporter.

Voters and HuffPo readers need to be aware of some of the Clinton Campaign dynamics behind the scenes:

I am not surprised. She could only succeed if she used the politics of "divide and conquer". When she saw she was not winning she turned to turning people against Obama, i.e. older women, white lesser educated blue collar workers, etc. She made them believe that only she could and would help them. She used them as bargaining chips for the future.
Let's see what she does now...
Remember it ain't over til the fat lady sings, and she seems to have only one song "Me Me Me"

While Hillary made the final decision in this case, I can't help but feel the people she surrounded herself with were pretty much behind this power grab. Ickes (sp) made this clear during the meeting regarding FL and MI.

So far Obama has done nothing but impress me and I'm pleased he is the nominee.

Senator Clinton's power play failed for the same reason her campaign failed - she underestimated the intelligence of the electorate, treating voters like pawns she believed she could manipulate in a cynical ploy to extort Senator Obama for the power she could not earn herself. The American people are smarter than that. Obama talks to people like adults, capable of logic and reason and in his speeches he acknowledges his own frailties and every person's right to disagree with him. When did you ever hear Hillary Clinton admit to having a single fault or voice her respect for those who didn't agree with her position?

"The American people are smarter than that..."

You are forgetting the people (18 million) who were gullible enough to fall for her rhetoric. Some have already organinzed a website to get McCain elected. Another sign of their lack of intelligence!
The media is already saying Obama will use Bill Clinton and Hillary to campaign for him. Let's hope he keeps them as far away from him as possible!

So Hillary wants to make sure that Obama doesn't put another woman on the ticket?

Not surprised by this.

When people learn that Kathleen Sebelius is far more experienced, capable, ethical and personable than Hillary can ever be, and can deliver Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania, then people may finally see that Hillary is in fact SO SO after all.

Hilary Rosen said it best, "I am not a bargaining chip, I am a Democrat."

How can the Clinton's have strayed so far from the heart of the matter -- to stop the madness that has been the last eight years?
