The Lowe's Controversy and the Success of Religious Pluralists

Posted: 12/18/2011 7:50 pm

As someone who works in the field of promoting interfaith dialogue on Islam in America, I can tell you it has been a hectic couple of weeks. When Lowe's Home Improvement decided to pull its ads from TLC's new reality show "All American Muslim," they sparked a national crisis over Islamophobia in America. But crisis is the wrong word. I prefer opportunity. I say opportunity for two reasons.

One, the Lowe's debacle has already proven that the Muslim community is well organized, ready to respond, and even able to lead a movement that garners support from acclaimed entertainers and public figures such as Sen. Ted Lieu and Russell Simmons. In fact, more than 32 congressional representatives have publicly called on Lowe's to re-instate advertising on the TLC show.

Secondly, the controversy has shown that interfaith dialogue, relationship building between faith groups, and coalition building when there is no crisis, really does pay off. As Eboo Patel, author of "Acts of Faith," has rightly pointed out, the future of religious pluralism will be decided by the success or failure of two groups: religious pluralists or religious totalitarians.

The Lowe's controversy was initiated by a fringe group of religious totalitarians, the Florida Family Association. Yet, as Brie Loskota has convincingly shown, their strategy has backfired. As I write this blog, there are four petitions online that call on Lowe's to stand up to bigotry and reinstate the ads on TLC, and a national network has formed to challenge Lowe's and their decision called the National Lowe's Boycott Network. Their organizing of peaceful protests has resulted in more than a dozen events nationwide, with thousands attending, and petitions have resulted in more than 80,000 signatures, whereas the religious totalitarians that started the controversy have one petition with only 25,000 signatures as of Dec. 18.

What's most striking about their organizing is that individual citizens without the support of established interfaith or Muslim organizations initiated it. In fact, it was only late into the crisis that national interfaith groups began to write op-eds and really show their support. This grassroots network has managed to push back against the religious totalitarians, and at least thus far into the crisis, they appear to be winning.

In the background of this grassroots work, two tragic events have taken place, which reveal the real world "human impact" of Islamophobia. In Kansas City, a young Muslim college student, Aisha Khan has gone missing after complaining to her family of a drunken man harassing her. In Houston, Texas a Muslim man named Yaqub Bham was severely beaten in what family members are calling a hate crime. These events show the urgency of the problem at hand.

Religious pluralists and everyday citizens that are concerned with Islamophobia have a long road ahead and should use the Lowe's crisis as an opportunity to think strategically. With the 2012 elections ahead, Islamophobia will not quietly disappear into the night. Newt Gingrich and other leading Republican candidates have already decided that anti-Muslim hysteria is a card they can benefit from using, and we should expect them to use it.

ADDENDUM: On Dec. 21, 2011, Aisha Khan was found by the authorities in Kansas City, Mo. Her disappearance, and the potential hate crime of a Houston, Texas man were both events that had many Americans concerned about the rising level of Islamophobia in America. Thankfully, the Khan case was not in any way linked to the rising levels of prejudice toward Muslims, and the attack of the Houston, Texas Muslim man is still under investigation as a potential hate crime.

Will Mr. Daniel Tutt (Outreach Director, Unity Productions Foundation), apologize for falsely accusing Americans of a hate crime against a Muslim girl?
10:24 PM on 12/22/2011
The Anti-Muslim “Hate Crime” machine keeps churning out products in order to distract attention away from jihad activity and portray Muslims as victims. The purpose - to shame non-Muslims into not investigating and not being suspicious of the jihad activity. This machine needs hate crimes against Muslims, because it will use them for political gains and to intimidate people into silence about jihad and sharia threats.

Daniel Tutt tried to draw our attention to two “vicious hate crimes against Muslims”, which supposed to be a clear proof that Islamophobia is spreading in America. What evidence did he give us to support his claims?

It turned out that Aisha Khan was not abducted by anti-Muslim bigots. Will Tutt apologize for falsely accusing Americans of a hate crime against a Muslim girl?

Another of his “hate crime” fizzles as well. Yaqub Bham's family is calling an attack a "hate crime." Tutt doesn't bother questioning this assessment at all, even though the attack looks more like an act of a very, very sick man, who stabbed Yaqub with a fork, biting off part of his ear.

“Deputies are looking into whether he was under the influence of narcotics or alcohol or had suffered a mental break, "because it was just incoherent, the things that he was saying." http://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/article/Islamic-group-family-say-attack-on-Muslim-may-be-2407967.php

Not printing a retraction speaks volumes. Words like these have started for worse then debate.
01:12 PM on 12/22/2011
Hey, Tutt. Are you going to print a correction now that "Aisha Khan, the 19-year-old Kansas college student missing for nearly a week has been found safe and unharmed, according to ABC News' Kansas City affiliate KMBC.Overland Park Police Officer Brian Schnavel said that Khan was not abducted or held against her will, according to KMBC. Schnavel said no criminal act occurred."

Religious people don't apologize or admit to a wrong because like their god they can't be wrong.

heh, I posted that hours ago and they deleted my fomment. but added the addendum to the bottom of the article.

It seems Mr Tutts cry of islamophobia was without basis in at least one of the incidents.
As the "missing" girl has turned out not to be missing anymore, and there is no evidence to date that her "disappearance" had anything to do with her being forced against her will, or because she was a muslim.
Will he retracting or posting a correction?
Why did he jump to the immediate conclusion that her "disappearance" was due to her being a muslim?

Sorry Mr. Caton, but I find Christians with your mindset a lot more terrifying than any of the Muslims I know. And, quite honestly I believe you are a much greater ..." clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values..." than the Muslims portrayed in this program. And yes, I have watched it, solely because you don't think I should.

I guess you could say Jesus was intolerant: "I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father (God) BUT BY ME". Either he was a liar or He was who He claimed.
04:12 PM on 12/19/2011
religious intolerance makes me sick...acting out against people because they happen to hold different religious views than you do is disgusting and inexcusable...

To me, the issue is not about Lowes and Islam - it is about Lowes and the FFA.

Lowes has decided to bow to the FFA. Lowes has allowed itself to become a trophy displayed by an extremist Christian hate-group.

If major corporations are going to become lap dogs of the FFA, then we will all be living under biblical law tyranny soon. Which FFA target will Lowes back away from next.

We have to stand up to the bigots, or they might come for us next.
If Lowes supports the FFA, then only a fool would support Lowes.

Boycott Lowes

Funny, are you going to say the same thing when sponsors of items bow to jesse jackson's rainbow coalition protests, or Rev Sharpton's pressure on sponsors? Its always amusing when one complains about folsk bowing to pressure of various groups.

Will you stand up against folks like Sharpton?
10:53 AM on 12/23/2011
I have - and I will continue to - speak out against Sharpton when he crosses the line.
Hate speech is hate speech. The FFA is all about hate speech.

What exactly is your argument here -
that hate speech is ok because both sides do it? two wrongs make a right.
that is very moral of you to ignore the wrongs of your side because you perceive others to do those same wrongs - stay classy, carmachu2

I urge you to edit your reference to the Florida Family Association, or provide an update:

There is no "association". It's just David Canton, a single man, with a computer. He IS the FFA.

More of a reason why Lowes should not have supported him or pulled their ads.

Is a WIN/WIN possible for both MUSLIMS & LOWES? Is there a better solution than a boycott? See this SURPRISING PROPOSAL +comments, for how this could truly be a unique opportunity:

Lowe's should be ashamed. Their bowing to pressure from this group is equivalent of saying we dont want to advertise on this show about All American Christians anymore because this group pointed out to us that it doesnt show how dangerous the minority of Christians can be like Timothy McVeigh.

Senseless and I say that as strong Christian.
07:49 PM on 12/22/2011
Huffpost can't seem to get its "facts" straight. McVeigh was not a christian. He is best described as a lapsed catholic. Also, none of his motivation was based on christian/catholic doctrine or teachings. Instead it was a loathing of the government http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,17515,00.html . Unlike the jihadists, who quote Quran, Hadiths and other islamic teachings. I have never heard a convincing rebutall of the jihadists by the self described moderated islamists.

Christians really need to rethink their desire to control society and impose their beliefs on others, because the result is that we are seen as hateful and intollerant by others. This is not only damaging to Christianity because Christ was graceful, gentle and accepting, but it also encourages extreme and intolerant behavior that has resulted in violence against others. Christ didn't ask us to create a Christian society. He asked us to be kind to others.

Sorry, America, but I watched that show tonight…and it was about AMERICANS. My niece and nephew, also Americans, live close to where it's filmed. Also, not terrorists. Big box retailers all TEST for drugs because our Government is beholden to Big Pharma to keep MJ illegal. You know, the same government you want to protect you from non-terrorists. So a big shout out to HOME DEPOT tonight!! I'm sorry your employees couldn't be bothered to help me find a soldering iron, not once, but three times this morning and wouldn't touch the self-check out when it wouldn't work for me. I'm sorry that your employees let me, a four-year unemployed looking chick in to work early with them before that experience because they can't be bothered TO LOOK AT EACH OTHER. It's not my fault they couldn't have their crack instead of a latte (preferred in my zipcode). Where's your X-Mas SPIRIT? REGARDLESS…America, check where the stores donate to Politicos. Their ad dollars is the least of your concerns. Vote with your wallets for a change.
