Only John Edwards Can Beat McCain

I'll be 60 eight days before the election in November. This is a bad thing and a good thing. The bad thing is it ain't going to be a real long time before I'm dead. The good thing is I've traveled a few miles and have picked up something along the way, and that something is called "institutional memory".

As I watched news coverage of Monday night's debate, the ever-escalating "I know you are, but what am I?" fight between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton suddenly struck a memory from 28 years back. The feud between Teddy Kennedy and Jimmy Carter rushed into my mind like a horrible memory of an old girlfriend. My recollection of their self-destructive hostilities reminded me how their battles went a long ways toward giving this nation Ronald Reagan.

It was 1980, and the Democratic Party had two supposedly strong national candidates--one an incumbent president, the other a scion of America's national family. They were going up against a Republican Party that was searching for an identity and would go deep on the bench to nominate the host of "Death Valley Days".

I remember this as an election we shouldn't have lost. But as we have done so many times in the past, we Democrats figured out a way to step on our Johnson.

In that 1980 nominating battle, our two candidates went after each other like Sherman went after Georgia. The result? Unbelievably, half of Washington is now named after Ronald Reagan--though I'll still say I'm flying into National Airport until the day the Good Lord or the Devil calls me home.

Surely, I'm not the only one who can see this six-foot rabbit named Harvey. John McCain is going to be the Republican nominee. How do I know? Because "institutional memory" also reminds me that the Democratic Party I love can't count. And regardless of what you think of the Republicans, they can.

It should be clear to anybody with over a 50 IQ that my boy John Edwards, with his combination of red state electoral experience and toughness, is the only candidate who can beat John McCain. Whether you believe polls or not, polls from CNN to Rasmussen say just that.

And it should be equally as clear to anybody with over a 25 IQ that Obama and Clinton are going to render each other totally unelectable against any Republican, especially John McCain, by the time we get to the convention.

All the Republicans have to be loving this. Because the Democrat they don't want to face, John Edwards, is getting sandwiched between the coverage of this murderous cat fight between two so-called "historical" candidates who, when all is said and done, will be just that. HISTORY.

Edwards is not only electable; he is the best person for the job. He is the only candidate who will represent the lower 2/3 of Americans. Unfortunately, we devolve into discussing who is up or down in the polls, or who 'took a shot' at whom, when the issue is the future of our country and the world. We face so many crises, from health care, to global warming, to big business run amok, while over half the country barely has enough to live. Bush is going to jam through another tax cut for the wealthy while we count points in polls. I admit that there is not much a one vote majority can do in Congress, but there is much that they can stop. They must stop Bush. Now, not in 363 days. But who is counting??

Since Gore is not running, I've evaluated all the Dem candidates. I'm voting for Edwards. I truly do not think (regardless of the "delegate votes" and the MSM blather) that the majority of the Demo voters are ultimately going to want a woman or a black man for President. I would be happy if any Demo won against a Repub, however I'm being realistic. I liked Richardson, Dodd and Biden, as they had foreign policy experience. However, they aren't an option (nor is Gore-dammit!) I think there are some valid comments out here about the state of the Democratic party, and its leaders (Reid/Pelosi)..I'm very disappointed in them (to say the least). When all is said and done, we have to have a viable candidate that can beat whatever candidate the Repubs come up with. I think Edwards is the one who can.

If Hillary wins, I'm through with the Democratic party, and I'd rather see McCain be president than her. But I suspect the door would be wide open for Mike Bloomberg.

I could not agree more. McCain will be the nominee and Clinton and Obama are destroying each other. Edwards has a sound populace message. He presents well. Is clearly intelligent and well informed. Obama and Clinton have elevated Edwards to Presidential stature.

1) John McCain will not be the Republican nominee. Mitt Romney will. Just wait until the Super Tuesday election, when only Republicans vote for Republicans, not these independent and party crossover votes.

2) John Edwards doesn't have a chance in hell of being elected. Hillary and Barack have consistently received twice the votes he has. And he would get no swing or moderate votes in the general election. Republicans see him as the phony, whimpy candidate that he is.

I STRONGLY agree with your comments here.

I don't think Obama or Hillary can win a national election against a Republican backed by the full might of the corporate propaganda machine.

I also think that the 'message' coming out of the Obama and Hillary camp is a smear of lipstick on the pig of corporate plutocracy which is something the American people can no longer afford. Edwards is the only guy with a populist progressive message and he represents a chance to curb some of the egregious excesses of the GOP/DLC corporatist regime.

Having the media exalt Hillary and Obama as the dominant faces of the Democratic party is horrifying to me. It makes me suspect that the Democratic party is deliberately spiking itself into the ground at the feet of whatever treasury looting war profiting god-botherer the GOP manages to trot out in front of the cameras.

Think of what is at stake after 2008 and ask yourselves who is likely to begin cleaning up America and who is likely to let the expensively suited criminals continue to run amok? Talk about an existential crisis - this is definitely it.

Anybody But Grampy!!! I support Edwards--don't quit, John. Maybe Clinton and Obama will cancel each other. I know--I am a dreamer.

What I fear are many moderates and Independents staying away from the polls in November as neither party will deliver an acceptable canidate. Of those independents that will vote, too many men will never accept a woman if Sen. Clinton is the Demo canidate and too many white ones won't vote for a Black person if Sen. Obama is chosen. Sen. Edwards has the stain of being a big time Plaintiff's lawyer and many voters hate 'ambulance chasers' like him (unless they are the Plaintiffs) turning off too many others.
The Republicans will either choose a holy roller like Huckabee or a war monger like McCain or another rich person in Romney, dividing the party.
Probably we will end up with another weak President, with a weak mandate from the general public and easily swayed by the rich and Corportations.

Amen.

The only thing I give credit to Dubya for.

Fool me onece, shame on you
Fool me trwice, shame on me. (at least he tried to convey that)

What surprised me most is supposed activists that seem to be ignoring realities. Blindly following and repeating the attacks and calling names from the Obama game, because their apparent hatred for Hillary is so deep, they are doing anything to play victim (Joe Lieberman) and attack and vilify the other. Do they really think Hillary and Bill are going to sit by and allow him to call Bill Clinton a liar and accuse him of being racist?

For a supposed newbie, with little experience, who wants to be our new Uniter, he has sure made this one of the most divisive times I can remember.

The DLC thought they could have the nomination locked up. Either their tried and true or their "Rising Star" as the Anti Hillary.

May their greed be their own undoing.

PLease. There is no way a Republican will win the White House, any Republican. The American people can't be that stupid.... can they?

Hmmm 60 years old and still fixating on Reagan. Written at Idlewild Airport. Keep fighting them past wars and you'll lose again.
Thankfully Edwards lives in the present.

Let's hope that Edwards can last long enough to beat out Hillary and Obama.
