The Ugly Truth: How Diamondbacks Owner Ken Kendrick Continues to Support SB 1070

What's Your Reaction:

First run at thenation.com.

"If you are upset with Arizona's immigrant laws, please don't take it out on Major League Baseball! Sports and politics do not mix!" With a near military discipline, this had been the message pushed by much of the sports media in conjunction with the Arizona Republican party. The aim has been to head-off any notion of boycotting the Arizona Diamondbacks or calling for the 2011 All Star game to be removed from their home at Chase Field in Phoenix. Governor Jan Brewer was given a page on espn.com to say that boycott campaigns aimed at sports are "inappropriate and misguided." Diamondbacks executive Derrek Hall parroted the governor, calling protesters "misguided" because "the organization doesn't take political positions."

Team owner and Republican Party bankroller Ken Kendrick was shaken enough to release a statement saying that he personally "opposes" the bill.

There is one problem with this public relations fusillade: it's based on a fundamental lie. Ken Kendrick is showing through his actions that he not only supports this bill, he is using his position as Diamondback team owner to do it.

On May 20th, the Nation has learned, Ken Kendrick is holding a private fundraiser inside his owners box at Chase Field for SB 1070 supporter State Senator Jonathan Paton. The fundraiser will be taking place during the D-backs game against the San Francisco Giants. Paton is attempting to make the leap from the state house to the US Congress, and he is depending upon the deep pockets of Kendrick to make it happen.

Leave aside for a moment the ethical and perhaps legal ramifications that Ken Kendrick is using a stadium built with $250 million in public dollars to raise money for his pet candidates. The fact is that while Kendrick publicly distances himself from the bill, he is using the home of the supposedly "apolitical" Diamondbacks organization as a fund raising center for SB 1070 supporting politicians. As Paton says on his campaign website, "We need to secure the border, and we need to secure it now. That's why I voted for SB 1070, and that's why I urge the governor to sign it."

Jim Nintzel reported in the Tucson Weekly, "boasting that he voted for it [SB 1070] before he resigned from the state Senate to [run for Congress].....Paton said that complaints about racial profiling have been overblown."

Paton has also received full-throated support from the author of SB 1070, State Senator Russell Pearce. In an open letter, Pearce wrote glowingly of Paton, "I have served with Senator Jonathan Paton for the last five years in the Legislature. During that time he has voted for every single anti-illegal immigration bill I have sponsored...He has done this despite pressure from the open borders crowd...He opposes amnesty or any path to citizenship for those illegally in the United States...I am proud to have worked with him and know him to be a solid patriot. I believe he will make a great Congressman for Southern Arizona, a Congressman we can all be proud of."

Pearce himself has been under national scrutiny recently because of his disturbingly casual connections to white supremacist organizations. As Rachel Maddow highlighted on her show [7], Pearce has been photographed hugging Neo-Nazi leader J.T. Ready. He also received unwanted attention by forwarding online articles written by the Nazi organization the National Alliance.

Jonathan Paton trumpets the support he receives from Russell Pearce. This is who Jonathan Paton is. This is who Ken Kendrick is using his publicly-funded stadium to support.

Favianna Rodriguez, co-founder of Presente.org, which is a co-founder of the All Star Game boycott campaign MoveTheGame.org, said to me, "Latinos and their allies across the country are targeting Major League Baseball to show that laws like SB 1070 will have dire economic consequences. Mr. Kendrick's continued support of the politicians behind SB 1070 will only further inspire that movement."

There is only one conclusion. The Arizona Diamondbacks should continue to be boycotted and protested until Ken Kendrick stops supporting these politicians and using his publicly funded stadium to do so. The All Star game should be moved, and anyone who says that sports and politics don't mix, should first aim that cliche in the direction of the Arizona Diamondbacks owner's box. Keep the protests going. Keep calling to have the All Star game moved. Any other strategy would truly be "misguided."

Good for him.. the most vocal criticisms against SB 1070 tend to come from people who do not live in Arizona and thus do not have to deal with the problems of illegal immigration in their state. A poll was conducted a couple days ago asking Arizona residents whether they support SB 1070.. 60% said YES. If Obama would do his Damn job and protect the borders, perhaps AZ wouldn't have to be taking such steps..

"There is only one conclusion. The Washington Nationals should continue to be boycotted and protested until Congress gets off its butt and addresses immigration reform."

While I agree that Immigration reform is necessary and a comprehensive bill long overdue, I understand immigrants' frustrations. The reality is that it takes alot of money and time (could be up to 8 yrs) to work within the system. This policy is from the 1920's and 30's. In this age of computers, we can't streamline and modernize this system? Let's see, we can put a missile up someone's bunghole from 20 miles away, but can't fix this. But alot of this is hysteria.....I've lived in Az for almost 30 yrs and the situation with illegals is has it has been for that time. If the legislature was as interested in fixing the system as avidly as they're trying to arm everyone, the problem would have been solved years ago. John ("finish the danged fence" McCain and Kyle are hilarious. They've been involved in politics for years here and never did squat about this.

The world can't move to the US. No one is owed entry to this country. We have enough people now and we are still taking in a million immigrants a year on average.

In a somewhat related news, the City of Glendale, Arizona is willing to fork over $20 million of tax payer money to the Canadian company Ice Edge Holdings. Despite the fact Ice Edge wants the Coyotes to return to Winnipeg.

DON'T FORGET - it's thanks to the Republican Legislature.

Move the game,,the way to get this owners and the officials attention in Az, is to pile up the losses of revenue from this unconstitutional law,,, show the state ,which is already like most states overburdened in deficits,, how we feel by not spending money in that state and they will re-consider this travesty, guaranteed.

This law might not be the best way to go. But the federal government has simply refused to do it's duty and secure the border. There is no reason we cannot do it, except for the fact that we don't want to get the "fastest growing voting bloc in the country" angry. Phoenix has an average of one kidnapping a day, and most all are connected to either Mexican drug or human smuggling gangs. What do you suppose the costs of the police man hours invested in that are? As long as Washington continues to look the other way, and insist that the solution is an amnesty, you will see people pass laws like these.

Recent history withstanding ,, do you beleive that the feds are stalling now or that the problem has been ongoing for some time now,,, I remeber the last administration had 8 consecutive years to get something done and did not do a dam n thing about immigration,,,now the country as a whole is up in arms about the feds not doing the job,,where were all the complaints from Jan 2001- Nov 2008?

Actually there were a lot of complaints then also, and even before Bush. Bush in fact wanted an amnesty, aka "reform". It's been a long time failure. When Janet Napolitano was governor of Arizona in 2005, both she and Bill Richardson of New Mexico both declared border emergencies. Nothing much has changed.

And the administration before it had 8 years to deal with it(Clinton), as did the one before had 4 years....(Bush Sr)

TYhe country has been up in arms for a while on this issue. The Feds, that means both parties, refuse to deal with it. It now falls to the states. The violence has gotten much more out of hand in recent years, hence the states move.

Like it or not, politics have always been a part of sports. Hence the politics that stripped Muhammed Ali of his title when he refused to go to Vietnam as a conscienious objecter...the refusal to allow Blacks to play Major Leauge Baseball for years because of the racial politics in the country...the refusal to fund women's sports as equitably as men's sports due to the gender politics in this country...the politics motivating the USA's decision to boycott the Olympics...and the political gaming behind decisions to build publicly-funded stadiums and arenas throughout the nation. The examples of politics co-mingling with sports are numerous.

Dave Zirlan is merely exposing the hypocracy of Ken Kendrick speaking out of both sides of his mouth. It is impossible to simultaneously "personally" against a law while funding the people who make and defend the law. Ken Kendrick is a disingenuous and less than honorable individual.

You're saying they should be boycotted for *your* political reasons. Are you saying you disagree that the border needs to be controlled? If so, how many immigrants shall we allow to come in and stay? 100 million? 200 million? What's the number you're thinking of? And what will we do then, worry about getting control of our border?
How about this idea: leave baseball out of it and make your case for not controlling our border based on facts, not major league baseball teams which you think should be boycotted. Make your case, state your solution to the problem. Boycotting a baseball team is not leadership and it's not a solution--it's a diversion from the real issue by using a scapegoat.

Do you understand how stupid it is to be afraid?

We could state our case, assemble our logical evidence, present it calmly and rationally to the 1070 supporters, and still they will get hysterical about the "200 million immigrants" poised like an invading army to swarm over from Mexico. Logical evidence doesn't stand much of a chance against xenophobic hysteria and white supremacy. But the past has proven that the best and fastest way to effect someone's behavior is with money. And, in this case, sports is not a scapegoat; rather, it is the means to the ends of justice.

I wonder how many people are aware of just how strong the GOP is represented in Major League Baseball.

Most of us would not be surprised at ownership, but did you know that a survey in the last few years showed that 90% of white baseball players either support or are sympathetic with the GOP?
03:17 AM on 05/11/2010
Silly Dems! Baseball fans don't care about boycotts.

Hey you out-of-staters, I have lived in Tucson for over 35 years of my 54 years (WI native - but does that make me an AZ native? or an immigrant?), and I live in Raul Grijalva's District -- and we here in Pima (BLUE) Co. and the Navajo's on the Rez and the Tohono O'odham are greatly outvoted due to the districting in the state. Napolitano as our Gov. had allowed us the pleasure of witnessing the whackiness of Maricopa Co.Phoenix-RED, REAL RED) state legislature, and the pleasure of the VETO. We here OUTSIDE of the Phoenix area are still extremely upset that our dear Pres. stole her away - and there you have it. Unintended consequences.

And there is a screaming, SCREAMING community that hate SB1070,(good lord, "show me your papers" - Really? REALLY?)

I am as Blue as BLUE can be. The Reagan I-9 and the 2-yr ago AZ law that requires ALL AZ employers to follow the e-Verify Law - current emp sancions, which has had one sanction (2 days, against a Subway-what a joke). To negate NAFTA and Clinton's involvement (which he so readily recetly admitted in Haiti) and the Mexican farmer's instantaneous loss of livelihood over corn subsidies, and afterwords their exodus to the maquiadoras on the border which then closed down for even CHEAPER labor/environ rates in Asia - OMG, what a CLUSTERFUCK. You have all exhausted me in your blanket hatred. We understand you, but IT'S SO COMPLICATED.

Hello Dave Z, Thank you for truth digging,I am ashamed to say ,I live in AZ and I have taken my 7yr old Grandson and Myself to many Diamond Back games{Including spring training} and spent a lot of money at these games and as embarrassing as it is to say,I had know idea that Ken Kendrick was was a rabid cash raising and dispensing ATM for The Republican Party in this state.Well I guess Baseball isn't just baseball like I would like it to be,and on a parting note with regards to[sb1070],my Grandson is 1/4 Mexican,I think of him and other family ,so I guess once again, it's more than just baseball !
