The gossip on some of today's blogs got me thinking. Why would Chris Matthews suddenly decide to run for Senator of Pennsylvania? To act as the spoiler who prevented the Democrats from attaining a clear 51-49 majority? If the Democrats took control of the Senate, investigations into the leaks against Joe and Valerie Wilson are likely to expose some dirty laundry in the Washington press corps.
Remember, Chris Matthews, Andrea Mitchell and Tim Russert were much more than innocent bystanders to the smear campaign against the Wilsons. Joe Wilson's stand has always been that he's not a journalist protected by any reporter's privilege, and is dutybound to repeat anything he was told off the record, as when Matthews phoned him a week after the notorious Bob Novak column to say "I just got off the phone with Karl Rove, who said your wife was fair game." Matthews later told Newsweek: "I'm not going to talk about off-the-record conversations." Off the record with Wilson or with Rove?
