Bill Maher and Jon Stewart talked about it before the election. They were worried. How would they find comedy when George W. Bush was off the political stage? Barack Obama and his vision of hope wasn't as easy a target. Real Time is on hiatus so the pressure's off Bill, but Jon Stewart's The Daily Show is on every week and he's trying to find his way.
He's still refining his comic take on Obama, but he and his writers proved how great they are last night when they took on the horrific events of Mumbai. What could possibly be funny about a terrorist attack on civilian targets in a crowded urban center? What indeed?
Stewart's interview of correspondent John Oliver is absolutely brilliant. If ever a video deserved to go viral, it's this one:

I just wanna mention the bit on piracy again from these 2, which worked on a lot of levels.
I'm so cynical...I live in Mumbai, and when I saw them setting up a sketch, I thought it would be an outsourcing joke or something. I should've known better, these guys are too classy for that.
I thought John Oliver was brilliant. He tells is like it is and I agree with his take on the terrorists in Mumbai and it's how I feel about all terrorists, especially those who strike civilian targets.
OOOOOO, Arianna on tonight!!!!!!!!
They make me smile through hurt and anger. They were brilliant and more importantly, poignant.
They expressed exactly what I thought and felt.
Stewart is one of the greats, up there with Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Johnny Carson and George Carlin. What a moldable face, what split-second timing. He is in the comedy pantheon (and as the Romans say, 'don't forget to keep your pantheon, ladies'.)
You know, I just remembered something... No one has had any problems with Carthaginians recently, have they?
sublime
Actually, I thought the opposite. I love John Stewart because he usually is astutely introspective - but that piece put America's blindness to its own destructive actions on display to borderline delusion.
There you go: blaming the victims.
Which victims may I be blaming? South Asia is the victim, Central Asia is the victim, and Iraqis with their country in ruin are the victims. The fact is, that there are many responsible for terrorizing innocent people who want nothing but to live a productive life with the ability to exercise their full potential.
Given the own experience in NY with terrorism, how could they not be f****** angry and the M****** F*****'s? It is totally appropriate. That is why it is TOPICALLY ON POINT, and doesn't get diluted.
So true. I thought the same thing. Ignorant and careless. Love me some Stewart, but this just perpetuates the "we're better than them" myth.
