Don't Do As I Do, Do As I Say

Posted: 02/26/2012 1:24 pm

Arizona Sheriff Paul Babeu fancies himself a "Leader on Border Security" and an immigration hardliner. In 2010, when the Obama administration mounted a legal challenge to Arizona's harsh immigration law, the Pinal County sheriff stopped just short of calling the president a traitor charging, "Our own government has become our enemy and is taking us to court at a time when we need help."

Yet it turns out that the Babeu himself was willing to help one immigrant -- Jose Orozco, the sheriff's Mexican boyfriend.

That is at least until last week, when Orozco claimed that after their recent break-up Babeu threatened him with deportation. And, as if that were not bad enough, press reports suggest that the sheriff, who is a Republican candidate for U.S. Congress in Arizona's 4th Congressional district, apparently knew about his lover's tenuous immigration status and may have illegally employed Orozco without authorization.

Unfortunately this story is an all too common one in America.

Day in and day out people cynically use the immigration law as a battering ram to threaten and coerce undocumented immigrants. Often the abuser is a U.S. citizen husband who exploits his ability to sponsor his immigrant wife for a green card. He uses his citizenship status as a weapon, a means to control her and, quite literally, beat her into submission and silence. Understandably, the immigrant spouse feels trapped, and lives in constant fear that unless she does what she is told her husband will report her to the immigration authorities. The same terror is perpetrated upon domestic partners, children, and the elderly.

Thankfully, the immigration law provides protections designed to shelter abused immigrants from their predators. Immigrants may be eligible for lawful status through the Violence Against Women Act, or other law enforcement provisions such as the T and U visa categories. In this way the law empowers immigrant victims of crime to rescue themselves from a dark world of oppression and exploitation.

But to shield immigrant victims of crime the immigration law necessarily depends on the good faith and protective instincts of federal and state law enforcement. Immigrants alleging abuse must prove to the Department of Homeland Security that they qualify for legal protection. To do so they often must rely on police reports and law enforcement certifications. When it enacted protections for immigrant victims of crime Congress clearly envisioned a critical partnership between federal and state law enforcement. The protective provisions of the immigration law cannot work without it.

That's why the allegations against Paul Babeu are so shocking. As the elected sheriff of Pinal County Arizona he is exactly the type of law enforcement official to whom immigrant victims of crime must turn when they seek safe harbor under the immigration law. If, as alleged, Sheriff Babeu used his authority to threaten his ex-boyfriend with deportation or illegally hired him knowing he was unauthorized to work in the U.S., then Babeu is guilty of more than just violating the law -- he has engaged in an appalling breach of the public trust which should not be tolerated.

Is funny that republicans want to make resposible to Jose and every undocumented person living in US about Babeu's behavior, for republicans is always everyones's fault but not theirs.

As a woman, I can understand the abuses that Jose probably went through. I have had to deal with a sick man like Babeu. I'm well acquainted with the twisted mind set of this kind of individual and it is not fun. I'm quite sure in my heart that this man who holds a position of high law enforcement rank is deranged. He seems to get a sick pleasure of having power and over people he can hurt and control and destroy. He's a manipulator and a conniver. His behavior has been abominable. He's not even ashamed of himself. He has no conscience.

I don't know about the immigration status of babeu's boyfriend, but your article reminds me of something that happened in the UK a few years ago.
An immigration officer had decided he was tired of his wife, so, during a trip she made to Pakistan to visit her family, he got her name on a list of suspected terrorists, preventing her to set foot in Britain again. It took the administration 3 years to catch him, and only because the man was up for a promotion.

Isn't this the guy from Mcain's senate campaign commercial "and build the dang fence". Now it turns out he's gay and was in a relationship with a mexican immigrant. Oh the irony!! I wonder what Mcain has to say about his supporters situation?

That is the GOP mantra, "do as I say...not as I do..."

It is a form of superiority: I am richer, I am more American, etc. that they use to sway the weak minded to vote against their own interests. It is their only "employment" strategy other than waiting for crumbs to fall off the table.

Funny. I clicked the link to sheriff's page above and the first paragraph was headed by the following: Decorated Lawman - Iraq War Veteran - Corruption Fighter . . . Well, two out of three ain't bad! ;)

It can be tough but if we actually closed off the border it would make it tougher for somebody like this individual to be given the opportunity to violate the law.

The authour's demegoguery notwithstanding, the issue(s) are very clear....

As a Conservative, I believe that the Sheriff's sexual orientation is irrelevant. If he coerced his "partner" with threats of deportation, and/or employed him knowing his "status" was tenuous.......then he needs to be removed from his position.

Pretty simple right!?!

Careful, you just came out of the closet as a liberal with your "sexual orientation is irrelevant" remark because according to the conservative establishment, if you are left of Rush "Jeff Christie" Limbaugh, you are a liberal. You do know that Family Value Conservatives tend to hate homosexuals, and that icon of conservative Family Values, Ted Haggard, even said that gays should be executed to the approval of millions of conservatives. I admire your courage, your ability to use your morality to divorce yourself from the monumental bigotry that has become the secondary plank in the GOP platform, the primary plank being abject hypocrisy. I wish you the best, but I doubt you will last long as a conservative if other conservatives know of your liberal views that sexual orientation is irrelevant.

I do not speak for "conservatives", although I consider myself "supremely conservative". We in Canada have surrendered numerous personal freedoms in the name of "sexual freedom".....the idea of a woman being stoned for infedelity is not something we support. What you do in the privacy of your own home is really your buisness...as it should be!!
The problem is not the Government in the bedroom, it's the bedroom in government!!

And what is particularly despicable among the conservatives in AZ is their quick rush to accept Babeu for what he is, because they are Christians and who are they to judge, yet for twenty years there has been a whisper campaign against the state's top Democrat, Terry Goddard, that he is gay, right up to his 2010 challenge of Jan Brewer.

I think Sheriff Paul Baboon is goin down, down, down! Although from the text messages he sent his Mexican lover, his Papi, I understand he does quite a bit of that!! What I don't understand is how this scandal isn't on the same level as Chris Lee, Anthony Weiner, Herman Cain, David Wu, shall I go on? Chris Lee for example sent text pictures of himself without a shirt on and in shorts or something to that effect. Yes he was married but in the pics he was only shirtless. Now Paul Babeu was trolling for men on Gay Male Websites and sending pictures of himself with no shirt on, w/no shirt on&in his underwear briefs, and completely nude with an erection all the while having no clue who was actually viewing them or who this gentleman was!!! It doesn't matter if he's gay. What matters is the way he's conducting himself and the fact that he may be doing this while using his government work phone and email address. It's a huge question of his character.

What will it take to finally bring down this ring of Dirty Republican Politicians in Arizona that continually bend the law or think they're Above The Law?

HOW DID HE BEND THE LAW OR THINK HE WAS ABOVE THE LAW?????? He is against illegals but his lover was a legal immigrant. He broke up with this guy and the Mexican felt slighted so he decided to blow the sheriff's cover. This says much more about the character of the Mexican than about the sheriffs. Get real.
06:08 PM on 02/26/2012
Dude, the operative word here is "claimed". Where is the evidence? Where are the text messages? And why didn't the sheriff dress more like the cop in the Village People? I mean his sense of fashsion is terrible! Someone call Carson K for a consultation. I want answers dammit!
11:20 AM on 02/27/2012
I can only answer one of your not-so-sincere questions: copies of the deportation threats are in the hands of the lawyers from both sides, corroborating the fact that Babeu did, indeed, threaten to get Jose deported.

You're welcome.

Unfortunately, all the Washington politicians (Republicans and Democrats) are corrupt and they all want you to do as they say, not as they do. Even President Obama campaigns against the 1%, but has no issues with going on $4 million vacations a few times a year or spending $400.000 on Air Force One for a fundraiser. I find them ALL disgusting!

Could someone cite sources that clarify the actual immigration status of Jose Orozco, Sheriff Paul Babeu's former paramour of ten years? I understood from something I read last week that Mr. Orozco's "papers" were in perfect order, which made me see this still-mentally-closeted alleged abuser of his public trust, Mr. Babeu, as even more pathetic and desperate. There was a lot of disinformation flowing last week about Mr. Orozco before his pixilated identity was revealed and I'm having trouble recalling where I read about his actual status.

The media reports were that Orozco had a visitor visa valid for 10 years. The problem with that is that a visitor visa does not authorize presence in the U.S. It merely allows a foreign national to apply for admission to the US as a visitor. US Customs and Border Protection typically authorizes a stay in the U.S. of no more than 6 months. Unless the foreign national extends his or her period of stay beyond the time authorized by CBP s/he falls out of status at the end of the authorized period of stay. It is inconceivable that Orozco was given a 10 year period of stay as a visitor when he was admitted to the U.S. And it's highly unlikely that he would have been able to extend his visitor status more than a couple of times.
11:24 AM on 02/27/2012
Even Babeu's lawyers admit Jose is here in the US legally. His legal status was never in doubt, even with the lawyers of tghe man who threatened him.

Honey, what are you talking about? Who was in a frenzy? Now, u guys get so mad when one of the guys turns out to be a Human Being and not a robot of hate and prejudice.

Its not clear he is here legally, but regardless, Babeu wasn't up there saying 'well, my boyfriend is Mexican, and I know it can get complicated. Its very hard on people in love who now must worry about mixed immigration status.'

What makes him different from the tons of Americans married to Mexicans or dating them?

Nothing. and that's what pisses so many off.
Why don't u stop judging people, then there won't be any disappointment, deep guilt, cover up, dark activities, hatred, campaigns, disappointment, deep guilt, cover up, dark activities, hatred, campaigns...ad nauseum!
