Make meditation part of your personal maintenance program:

You take time out every day to keep your body clean by brushing your teeth and showering... Why not practice meditation as a mental cleansing routine? Meditating for at least five minutes in the morning and five minutes in the evening will help you reduce stress and clean out mental clutter.

Know what to expect:

When you first sit down to meditate, your mind can feel like a raging waterfall. Racing thoughts, uncomfortable emotions, and physical discomfort can make it seem as though you are not making any progress at all. Know that this is natural. When you experience these things, simply keep focusing on your meditation. With practice, your mind will become calmer, and you will experience a little more space between your thoughts.

Practice no matter what:

Daily meditation practice can help you calm mental reactivity and emotional imbalances that arise due to the highs and lows of daily life. Practice when you are feeling up, and practice when you are feeling down, and after a while you may find that you experience more stability within both extremes.
