David Quinn is an Irish-based religious and social affairs commentator. He has weekly columns in The Irish Independent and The Irish Catholic and appears frequently on TV and radio. He was previously editor of The Irish Catholic and as well as being a columnist with The Sunday Times (Irish edition). He is also director of The Iona Institute, a religion and society think tank (www.ionainstitute.ie)

It is almost impossible for Irish people, whether Catholic or not, to look at the Church, the 'institutional Church' at any rate, without first thinking of the child abuse scandals. Therefore Pope Benedict XVI will be assessed in part by how well, or badly, he dealt with those scandals.
