You misunderstand. By economic necessities, she obviously means mining companies' profits, not jobs. (Don't forget who her friends are and who is backing her campaign.)
Hillary Clinton was asked about mountaintop-removal mining in an interview on West Virginia public radio (mp3 link) this morning. Her answer was, in my eyes, terribly disappointing. Here it is:
I am concerned about it for all the reasons people state, but I think its a difficult question because of the conflict between the economic and environmental trade-off that you have here.
I'm not an expert. I don't know enough to have an independent opinion, but I sure would like people who could be objective, understanding both the economic necessities and environmental damage to come up with some approach that would enable us to retrieve the coal but would enable us to do it in a way that wouldn't damage the living standards and the other important qualities associated with people living both under the mountaintop and people who are along the streams.
You know, maybe there is a way to recover those mountaintops once they have been stripped of the coal. You know, I think we've got to look at this from a practical perspective.
"Economic necessities"? "Trade-offs"? Here's a trade-off:

Gosh, those lucky duckies in West Virginia's booming economy just don't know how good they've got it!
Here, incidentally, is how good they've got it:

What a fun trade-off!

Here's a local college internship that was just posted in WV. Did Hillary mention any of this in her trip yesterday?
The Appalachian Coal Country Watershed Team (ACCWT) is looking for Summer Associates to live and work in low-income communities dealing with contaminated streams, depressed economies and other issues related to abandoned mine lands. ACCWT Summer Interns will spend 8 or more weeks working closely with local community watershed groups that have mobilized to alleviate these problems and make their home-place-watersheds healthier places to live and work.
Now we know who the Rand acolytes (Ms. Hachigian and Ms. Sutphen) are shilling for - the mining industry.
They have ignorantly stated ..." impending climate crisis that will exacerbate many of our national security challenges. Senator Clinton understands this and makes the point in her speeches that America has to change its own behavior before it can preach to still developing economies about their carbon excesses. Sen. Clinton talks a good game, while she and her husband and daughter have extensive financial holdings in mining, petrochemical production and international development projects that is countermand to the purported "green message," that Sen. Clinton espouses. In addition former President Clinton receives a hefty 10 million dollars a year for sitting on the board of directors of one of the middle-east's largest contributor"s of greenhouse emissions. It is public record that, during Bill Clinton's tenure as president labor laws, and environmental regulations were eviscerated through administrative rule. Also, opportunities to strengthen the Kyoto protocols were squandered. Meanwhile the Clinton administration engaged in brokering international trade agreements that effectively under cut worldwide labor, safety, health and environmental protections all for the good of corporate profit.
Mr. Roberts, It is highly disappointing that your HuffPost colleagues would laud Sen. Clinton's purported, "green message." A message that is highly suspect when considering the legislation that Sen. Clinton has voted YEA. Disappointing but, not surprising from RAND acolytes.
It takes more than just talking the talk. Sen. Clinton and her family must walk the walk if they are to be deemed creditable. Moreover, Ms. Hachigian and Ms. Sutphen have lost creditability. How about some transparency ladies? Who's writing your copy? Are you two capable of reiterating anything more than campaign talking points.
I hale from West ByGod Virginia and it is SOOOOO nice to see that Hillary bothered to educate herself about our environmental woes and declining jobs before she deigned to swoop in for a photo op today. What a weenie!!!
If everybody there is like you, I can't wait for my trip to your state in July for vacation!
Seriously, ready on Day One? She's not even ready to give an answer to what seems to me to be a pretty clearcut question.
Unfortunately, we're split like the rest of the country. You'll like your vacation here. There's no place prettier.
Truly disappointing! Thank you David, for keeping us all abreast of what the candidates are saying on the campaign trail, especially when it directly contradicts what their written statements are on the issues. I couldn't believe my ears when both Hillary and Obama were pandering to the oil roughnecks in Houston and surrounding areas, reassuring them that their jobs would be secure under their administrations. How can one be pro-oil, and pro-environment? How can one justify blowing up a mountain, polluting all the rivers down stream, in favor of retreiving coal? We are left with two of the least environmentally friendly candidates, and minimally Hillary looked promising, especially with her endorsement by RFK jr, who supposedly had a good handle on what to expect from her. We have all been hoodwinked apparently.
Clinton equivocate? I'm shocked!
You mean like agreeing to the rules about Michigan and Florida up front, now shrieking that they'll be disenfranchised?
You mean like voting for Iraq and claiming she didn't think it was a vote for war, but still defends voting for the war - most recently with "so Saddam wouldn't compete with Bin Laden"...!?!?!?!
Clinton - the Romney replacemnt...;-)
If the poverty rates are that high there, what would it be with no surface mining at all, and what do you suggest these people do for work? And I mean jobs they could do today, not some 5-15 year plan. I agree it's probably not a good trade off, but as usual, this is another report with no solutions, except to put the few people who have jobs, out of work.
Did it occur to you that mountaintop removal mining is a low labour, environmentally destructive, but high profit method of mining? The tradeoff is between profit for the company owners vs. the public good (jobs and environment). Clinton obviously doesn't even believe in labour and environmental standards in the US, let alone enforcing such standards in international trade agreements. (Or she's just ignorant about this issue, which may or may not be better -- but doesn't explain your defense.)
Come on! You know damn well that most of the underground mining is now automated. Very FEW mining jobs are left. The coal companies, as always, are raping our state of all its natural resources and giving little back.
It's time to start INVESTING in education and retraining. WV is going to become the next high tech nexus, so better check out the new tech college programs springing up. There's your solution. What has Hillary got to say about it? Since she's so pro-corporate lobbyists, I'd guess very little. HER clients want to keep the coal flowing.
The environmental trade off is simple. Carbon safely tucked away in the earth will be released into the athmosphere. There are other, better ways then digging for coal. Lets instead invest money in renewables and alternative energy to benefit generations to come rather than burdening them with added pollution, global warming and prolonging the inevitable. Coal and oil are both finite resources. The sensible thing is to go for alternatives now, rather than 50 years from now. But wait. That would make the "Village Idiot from Crawford's" and Veep Dick "can't shoot straight" Haliburton's war for oil senseless, the projected $3,000,000,000,000 to $5,000,000,000,000 a waste, that would have been better spent on those renewable and alternative energy sources.
I can't believe that she said that and Robert Kennedy, Jr endorses her. I saw him give a 3 hour talk expressly stating that this is one of the most destructive environmental practices currently going on.
Somebody should call her on that ASAP - and Obama if he equivocates during campaigning in WV.
Also, there is a contact person for media/journalists at Riverkeeper (JFK Jr's environmental organization) who might be a good person to ask about his endorsement of Hillary...

There is a contact link at the bottom of the home page. That's at least a start for inquiring as to why he supports Hillary.
I saw Robert F. Kennedy speak at length on my campus this past fall on this issue too. Very bizarre that he has endorsed Clinton, especially given the nature of his other comments about the need for change in government, media, and Americans' worldviews.
I was very surprised to see that he endorsed her, too. In his book Crimes Against Nature,--which I love--he writes extensively about the detrimental effects of crony capitalism. He picks Hillary "I don't think lobbyists are bad" Clinton? I don't get it.
Obama's going to be in Beckley tomorrow. Maybe you should ask him about it and report back here what he says.
You should call Robert Kennedy Jr.! (I don't have an in with Hillary Clinton or Robert Kennedy, but if you do, please use it!)
