McCain and Perception

Jerry Adler has a rundown on climate change in this year's presidential campaign. Somewhat miraculously for a mainstream publication like Newsweek, it's pretty good.

This is a good point:

So, ironically, McCain -- with a voting record that would put him at the bottom of the heap among Democrats -- is sometimes perceived as more passionate about the environment than his Democratic opponents, whose objectively much stronger records are viewed as a matter of party orthodoxy.

I'll just say that the disparity between the way McCain is "perceived" and the reality of his record and positions is what's sustaining his entire campaign. If the press stops kissing his ass perceiving him in a way at odds with the reality of his governance, I suspect his support will dwindle.

The fact that McCain wants to piggyback nuclear power onto sustainable energy is ludicrous. Recently at a lecture I attended, given by the leaders of the National Academies (Sciences, Engineering, Medicine) Global Warming was named as the most urgent issue of our time. Ralph Cicerone discussed with University and High School students options for addressing the need for research and development of new and innovative ways to deal with the growing threat to our civilization.
He suggested that there was no one "good" source of energy. Each region of the country has different ways to generate energy, geothermal, hydro, wind or solar being more plentiful in some areas than others. The point is, McCain, being from Arizona, COULD be a strong proponent of Solar research and implementation, if he was really a "green" supporter. As it is, he simply wants to protect the nuclear program AZ already has in place- even though nuclear uses a TREMENDOUS amount of water, which is obviously not very plentiful in Arizona, versus the sun, which of course is in abundance. I agree with you Dave, McCain is being sainted by a media who is growing restless with the Democratic infighting.

Unfortunately McCain could be caught in bed with an underage gay terrorist illegal immigrant hooker and the mainstream media would still be doing stories about Obama's bowling score.

It could have been interesting reading it your attachment had not been remove or never attached to make you article complete. Yes I could have agreed with you about ass kissing reporter until today. One story on HuffPost exposing McCain's name calling of his a c*nt appears to be the standards of some people knew but had only seen in the beltway of DC nothing but nice accounts of MCCain. Therefore three candidates are all humans. No reporter can write articles with the words on a scale leaning very heavy side, lacking balance meaning personal opinion should be removed.

Be careful, David, or CNN will call you a "heckler" and then spend a few minutes telling us how brilliantly Saint McCain responded with nobility and grandeur (even if he didn't).
