To understand just how bad the 112th Congress, elected on Nov. 2 and taking office on Jan. 3, is likely to be for peace on Earth, one has to understand how incredibly awful the 110th and 111th Congresses have been during the past four years...

Early in 2009, President Barack Obama escalated the war in Afghanistan with 21,000 "combat" troops, 13,000 "support" troops, and at least 5,000 mercenaries, without any serious debate in Congress or the corporate media.  The President sent the first 17,000 troops prior to developing any...

(33) Comments | Posted October 15, 2009 | 1:42 PM

Presidential power has been on a pathway of expansion beyond what the Constitution outlined, and what a government of, by, and for the people requires, since George Washington was president. That expansion, which hit the highway after World War II, got a turbo boost during the co-presidency of...

It sounds like the plot for the latest summer horror movie. Imagine, for a moment, that George W. Bush had been allowed a third term as president, had run and had won or stolen it, and that we were all now living (and dying) through it....

So, If Not Caroline Kennedy, Then Who?

New York state could soon be represented in the U.S. Senate by a woman with more respect for and understanding of democratic representation, the Constitution, and the rule of law than we've grown accustomed to finding in Washington, D.C., a woman who has done more to oppose the abuses of...

As Congress Lay Dying

(6) Comments | Posted December 1, 2008 | 4:04 PM

The debate among progressive activists and commentators in recent weeks has tended to range from the leave-Obama-alone-and-he'll-fix- everything position to the stage-a-protest- at-Obama's-house-for-the-next-month position, including numerous stances in between those extremes. What all these positions share is acceptance of the incredible shift of power from Congress to the White House...

Debating Impeachment Among Democrats

(19) Comments | Posted February 12, 2006 | 5:14 PM

Can you even imagine Republicans, even if they had a minority in Congress, debating whether or not to call for the impeachment of a Democratic president known and documented as guilty of a wide range of high crimes and misdemeanors? In particular, if you can imagine that, can you imagine...

Why I'm Getting Arrested at the White House Today

(18) Comments | Posted October 26, 2005 | 12:30 AM

The first reason I'm going to lie down, refuse to move, and wait to be arrested outside the White House today is my belief that massive civil disobedience is needed if we are going to end the war and forestall the next war. The power of nonviolent sacrifice has been...

Imagine you could take years and years to carefully study political history, that you could read numerous sources of political news from around the world, that you could do your own research into declassified government documents and little known areas of information, and that you could travel extensively so that...

Sheehan Breakthroughs, Unbridgeable Divides, and Taboos Unbroken

(12) Comments | Posted August 22, 2005 | 2:25 AM

The Washington Post on Sunday wondered out loud whether Cindy Sheehan might be a "catalyst for a muscular antiwar movement." In translation, this is an assertion that Cindy Sheehan has already become an accepted reason for the corporate media to finally acknowledge the existence of, and consequently help to build,...

Bush Won't Answer Cindy, But Has to Answer Congress

(3) Comments | Posted August 18, 2005 | 3:00 PM

Cindy Sheehan has raised the right question: For what noble cause did her son die?

Were the reasons Bush gave Congress for why the war was necessary truthful ones? What did Bush tell Tony Blair three and a half years ago when he invited him, unlike Cindy, in out of...

Party or Die

(5) Comments | Posted August 11, 2005 | 4:40 PM

The slogan "Vote or Die" was intended to motivate people to go out and knock on doors and make phone calls to help elect one pro-war presidential candidate over another. It wasn't much fun and it didn't affect the election or the war.

A lot more fun than knocking...
