"Takin' It to the Streets": A Playlist for "Occupy Wall Street"

Posted: 10/02/11 12:17 PM ET

Despite some rumors flying through the Twitter-verse last week, Radiohead didn't actually play "Occupy Wall Street." That's a shame because there are a few folks on Wall Street for whom "Creep" really ought to be their theme song. Instead, here's a playlist for those gathered in downtown New York trying to make a big stand out in the streets. There's one song that comes to mind. It represents the arrogance and "Let 'em eat cake" attitude of Wall Street (and the NYC police desires), but also the spirit of this new Revolution (you just need to tweak the lyrical perception a bit):

"Get 'Em Out By Friday" Genesis

Stay strong Occupy Wall Street. The far right always cite the American Revolution as if they actually knew anything about it or believed in it. But it's the French Revolution they should have studied. Slainte all my brothers and sisters.

In your reply to my earlier post to Phil, the reply option had ran out. Luckily, I can reply here.

Thanks for this great Genesis cut, and I agree it's most appropriate.

Isn't it funny how "Mr. (so-called) American Revolution Expert," Glenn Beck, is so concerned about protesters in the US? Calling them "un-American."

I believe ol' Glenny has studied the French Revolution, and these beginnings of the, "We're Not Gonna Take It"-The Who, protests and marches, have him (and the rest of the power elite) quite concerned. As well they should be.

Slainte to you, my friend. Irish Heritage myself.

from Stevie Wonder: "You Haven't Done Nothing"

We are amazed but not amused
By all the things you say that you'll do
Though much concerned but not involved
With decisions that are made by you

But we are sick and tired of hearing your song
Telling how you are gonna change right from wrong
'Cause if you really want to hear our views
"You haven't done nothing"!

It's not too cool to be ridiculed
But you brought this upon yourself
The world is tired of pacifiers
We want the truth and nothing else

And we are sick and tired of hearing your song
Telling how you are gonna change right from wrong
'Cause if you really want to hear our views
"You haven't done nothing"!

David, many of these songs are great but whoever said this list needs some grit is right... We need some MC5... You know, that band that doesn't get acknowledged by your boss Jann's friends every year when they put a bunch of disco and unheard-of folk acts in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? You know, that band that has been overlooked every year like Iggy and Alice were, like 15-20 times? I still subscribe to Rolling Stone, only because the subscription is dirt-cheap and if I at least get one or two good articles an issue, it's still worth it... Overall though, things have gotten a little crusty over there... A lot of writers manufacture story themes that aren't there, and it definitely isn't the reliable place to go look for rock and roll. I also wish you guys would challenge public taste in music the way Taibbi challenges public opinion in politics, rather than just go with the flow and market crap... Where's that rebel spirit in the music department?! I think you guys should hire me, I want to help you guys out, here are a few links to my work attached above. Feel free to email me at ranierej@gmail.com if you dig it. Let's make magic happen. Peace my man -Joe

Oh yeah, eventually they will send the protesters to the stars on a one way trip, and the star will be the sun.
