As a rule, songs about miners haven't generally been as upbeat as the news we are watching now on CNN. So here's a largely uplifting playlist for all the miners in Chile, and all the people who love them. These songs are sent out today in hopes that "The Rising" continues and that beautiful "Tunnel Of Love" keeps bringing them all home safe and sound.

THE RISING - Bruce Springsteen
UP, UP & AWAY - The 5th Dimension
LIFT ME UP - Jeff Lynne
HIGHER GROUND - Stevie Wonder
RISE UP - Diane Birch
A HIGHER PLACE - Tom Petty
GOLDMINE - The Pointer Sisters
DREAM OF A MINER'S CHILD - Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys
RESCUE ME - Fontella Bass
UP! - Shania Twain
(YOU'RE LOVE KEEPS LIFTING ME) HIGHER AND HIGHER - Jackie Wilson
COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER - Loretta Lynn
SAFE AND SOUND - Sheryl Crow
WAY DOWN IN THE HOLE - Tom Waits
TUNNEL OF LOVE - Dire Straits
OUTDOOR MINER - Wire
MINER'S PRAYER - Dwight Yoakam
30 DAYS IN THE HOLE - Gov't Mule
TUNNEL VISION - The Roots
THIS WAY UP - Brian Ray
FAMILY AFFAIR - Sly & The Family Stone
MINER'S REFRAIN - Gillian Welch
UP - Justin Bieber
HOLE HEARTED - Extreme
MINER'S SONG - Woody Guthrie
HOLE IN THE EARTH - Deftones
DOWN IN THE HOLE - James Taylor
SOUL MINER - Duke Levine
DOWN IN THE HOLE - The Rolling Stones
THE HOLE - Randy Travis
TUNNEL OF LOVE - Bruce Springsteen

What are your uplifting songs for the miner?

My friend wrote an original song called '33 Miners' for the rescued miners because he was so inspired by their courage, hope, and tenacity. I created a video for him. http://bit.ly/dAGBPo

first thought was Alice and Chains - Down in a Hole, which has been 'got'.

so how about, from both Johnny Cash and Michelle Shocked(first version I ever heard, love that hammered dulcimer).... as well as many others, it a popular Appalachian Bluegrass song...

Great list RS.Going back to the beginning, I think you're the first with "I Shall be Released."
I note the absence of any J-rock, however.....

OK, so they say imitation is the best form of flattery (or something like that, whoever "they" are).
So here's a little Steven Wells for y'all:

They were covered by that "Darkness on the Edge of Town" in a "N.Y. Minute".
I'm sure many were "Close to the Edge" during that "Wasted Time", and couldn't wait to see the "Heart of the Sunrise".
Through many "Lonely Days, Lonely Nights" the "Hungry Heart" left them longing for their "Tough Mama" and the "Horizontal Bop".
Also longing for food, they must have been "Hungry Like the Wolf", so much so that even a "Cold Turkey" sandwich would have given them much "Satisfaction".

Enjoy the day all.

So often, what "they" say is apocryphal, but in this case, it happens to be true, and I'm duly flattered. And, oh man, did you hit the proverbial nail on the head. You just know those guys had some interesting discussions to pass the time.

And speaking of the "Horizontal Bop," it appears a handful are now having interesting discussions in a similar vein, but of a slightly different tone, with their wives. One of Ricky Ricardo's signature phrases comes to mind. I wonder if any of them were nervous enough before they were brought up to ask, "Can I "Stay Just A Little Bit Longer?" (Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs)

As I watched each miner "lift off" in the capsule, knowing he would be spending the next 10-20 minutes in a claustrophobic tunnel, I began singing the chorus from an old Grand Funk Railroad song.....

I'm getting closer to my home.....I'm getting closer to my home.....

If I had been one of those trapped miners, that's the song I would have been singing as I made my way through the tunnel.

Wow, nice call

Grand Funk don't get enough credit.

That song and "Bad Time" and a few others hold up very, very well to me.
