'Thunderstruck': A Playlist for the Oklahoma City Thunder

Posted: 06/13/2012 8:05 am

I would like to thank the Oklahoma City Thunder for giving my sons and I a basketball team to root for in this year's NBA Finals -- instead of just rooting against the Miami Heat. Kevin Durant and the whole Thunder team showed a lot of heart last night. So in return here's my loud, heartfelt playlist for my new favorite team. As always, please score a few points by adding your own thundering songs below -- or if you're a LeBron James fan, go ahead and add some hot Heat tunes below.

THUNDERSTRUCK -- AC/DC
THUNDER ROLLS -- Garth Brooks
THUNDER -- Prince & The New Power Generation
THUNDERBALL -- Tom Jones
THUNDER AND LIGHTNING -- Chi Coltrane
THUNDER AND LIGHTNING -- Thin Lizzy
THUNDER ROAD -- Bruce Springsteen
THUNDER AND RAIN -- Graham Parker
THUNDER -- Boys Like Girls
THUNDER ON THE MOUNTAIN -- Bob Dylan
THUNDER THUMBS AND LIGHTNIN' LICKS -- The Brothers Johnson
GREAT BIG KISS -- Johnny Thunders
GOD OF THUNDER -- Gene Simmons
HIGHER GROUND -- Thunder
THUNDER -- Thunderclap Newman with Zoot Money
THUNDER ISLAND -- Jay Ferguson
NIGHT THUNDER -- Michael Murphey
YOU LOVE THE THUNDER -- Jackson Browne

FIGHTING THE WORLD--Manowar (for both teams).
HOTTER THAN HELL--KISS (for the Miami Heat)
THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL--ABBA (rather obvious, no?)
TOO BAD (YOU DIDN'T EAT YOUR WHEATIES)--old Wheaties commercial (for whichever team loses the series)
SOME HEADS ARE GONNA ROLL--Judas Priest (for the coaching staff of the losing team)
HELLO FROM THE GUTTER--Overkill (for the "haters" of the Heat and Thunder)
BASKETBALL JONES--Cheech And Chong (for the "hard-core" fans of the NBA)
OVERKILL--Motorhead (if the winning margin is high)
YOU'RE GOING DOWN--Sick Puppies (what one team's fans are saying about the other team)

As a Heat fan, I keep hearing "thunderbolt and lightning, very very frightening me". Not enough jibes to really add Bohemian Rhapsody to the list, but I cannot get that phrase out of my head leading up to game 2.

Since the Thunder used to be the Seattle Supersonics, how about a little tribute to the old days in Seattle, land of rain, coffee, Boeing and grunge.

Who'll Stop the Rain -- CCR
Black Coffee in Bed -- Squeeze
Jet Airliner -- Steve Miller Band
Supersonic -- Pearl Jam

Here's one song covering both teams:

Fire and Rain - JT

And some Heat songs:

Where Are You Tonight (Journey Through Dark Heat), Romance in Durango - Dylan
Hot Blooded - Foreigner
Heat of the Moment - Asia
The Heat is On - Glenn Frey

On a positive Baseball note, The Yankees are in first place, at least for today.
Congrats to A-Rod on tying Lou Gehrig for number of Grand Slams.

How about "Born to Run', as OKC has reintroduced so refreshingly exciting fast break basketball in the NBA!

Eric Spoelstra's halftime speech makes him sound like the greatest high school guidance counselor in NBA history

I agree with 'Thunder on the Mountain' but not the Bob Dylan version. Wanda Jackson was born, raised and still lives in OKC. She has a street named after her a few blocks away from the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Bricktown. At sixteen she was a protoge and rumored girlfriend of Elvis Presley who convinced her to switch from country to Rock and Roll. She was the first woman elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Still going strong and in her seventies she still tours mostly in Europe where she is still known as the Queen of Rock and Roll and has appeared in concert with such notables as Adele. Here's her version of 'Thunder on the Mountain accompanied guitarist Jack White

Although I'm not myself a BB fan, I'll join "dim" in adding another great Kinks classic to the list, in support of a wonderful father sharing the sport with his wonderful sons.
