PHOENIX - Just as Arizona Republican Party Chairman Randy Pullen was concluding a meeting this morning at the Arizona Republican Party headquarters, he and fellow Republican leaders and staffers watched in shock as police officers handcuffed and took into custody their top staffer, Executive Director Brett Mecum, who oversees the day-to-day operations of the party.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Mecum was photographed just after midnight on April 10 by a stationary photo enforcement camera driving his Ford Mustang on the 101 freeway eastbound near 59th Avenue driving 109 miles per hour in a 65 mile-per-hour zone.
The DPS statement says, "The state statute which covers criminal speeding applies to everyone equally. If there are valid criminal charges, the arrest of Mr. Mecum is like any other criminal speeding arrest. In this case, the charges speak for themselves."
Lee Miller, an attorney for the Arizona Republican Party, told the Arizona Capitol Times, "It was a silly, stupid thing to do and there is no excuse and there's no justification for it."
Six hours after Mecum's arrest, a fellow Republican Party staffer was still waiting to pick Mecum up from the Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail in Phoenix.

It's utterly bizarre that so many posters have no concept of how dangerous driving 100 mph is, especially in an urban area. If you want to drive like maniac, with no regard for other people's safety, then go out the Bonneville Salt flats or something.
Nothing good happens after midnight.
Going 10, maybe 15 mph over the limit is "just speeding", and deserves a citation in the mail. Going 44 over is "haul you off to jail" time. Claiming that this must be "politically motivated" is just crazy. I'm just amazed at how many people are so cavalier about risking other people's lives. This guy was creeping up on twice the posted speed limit! Sheeh!
Perhaps he will be kept incarcerated under the supervision of Sheriff Arpaijo...
You guys need to stop diminishing this. Going that fast at any time is just criminal and should be more than a speeding ticket. As a medical professional, I spent too many days and nights trying to save the lives of people who were either seriously injured or killed by people doing stuff like that.
it is a felony
This liberal Democrat weighs in on Randy Pullen's side. This is a shocking waste of police resources and abuse of police authority. We cite speeders; we don't send police out to arrest them.
We arrest people who speed over 100 miles per hour. Perfectly reasonable.
bone up on the law here in AZ, I keep trying to tell you folks, IT IS A FELONY, the stretch he was driving has had several fatal crashes from speeding. A speeder is 5,10,15 mph over speed limit--what this guy was doing is reckless endangerme nt...
I'm a liberal Democratic RN. Spend a day in an Arizona trauma hospital and you'll change your mind, Beninn. Our speed cameras are saving lives by the dozens and have been for a year or more, his rate of speed was criminal, and arresting criminals is never a waste of anyone's time.
really Beninn? a waste? bet you would feel differently if you or someone you loved was hit by a car doing 109!!!!!!
It's all about accountability, something most Republicans and others need to look up in the dictionary for clarification!
He's probably a NASCAR dad...cut him some slack. He's seen it done plenty of times. No one's life was ever in jeopardy.
How do you know that? Any other car out there was in jeopardy. Someone goes to pass another car; check the mirror and see nothing, change lanes and this guy's on top of them. There's a video on YouTube of a guy crashing doing over 100 on the Autobahn; the car rolls and takes out two other cars. Yeah, cut him some slack.
I'm a democrat and a liberal, but this I don't like....fu nny it happened in a conservative state. Then again, if he wanted to do a 100, maybe he should of went he should of went somewhere more deserted outside of Phoenix.
I have no use for rethugs but come on. You have to come to the guy's work and arrest him instead of just issuing a summons for a speeding ticket...T his is real police work?
Talk about politically motivated. Making a scene over a speeding violation? How many times does this happen a day in the city? If we applied this logic to every moving violation, where do they find the time to investigate and arrest murderers, rapists and child molesters?
you guys just dont get it--reckless endangerment, again, people have been killed on this stretch, it aint out in the country dudes, it is in the city with multiple on and off ramps in residential areas as well as commerical areas, PLUS, there is construction going on......
There's one cop who won't be employed much longer...
wrong.
they've got to start somewhere. one down...
the fact that a car can go more than 100mph makes the car an attractive nuisance, like a neighborhood swimming pool without a fence around it. i would advise him to hire a lawyer to sue ford for building the attractive nuisance, therefore jeopardizing the life of the driver and all the other car drivers and their passengers on the road.
i would advise everyone else owning such a capable car to do the same if ticketed.
Yeah, I'm sure he could get someone to do that pro bono, too. Sounds like a winner.
This is a non-story regarding a nonsensical arrest for something most people have done in their life, he was speeding.. ...
If you read my comments, you know I am a pretty open-minded Democrat, who is more liberal than conservative however, I think this arrest is over-kill and most likely a strictly political stunt. Pullen should never have been arrested.
And, the fact he was arrested in front of his people makes this a decidedly repulsive political stunt. Whoever was responsible for this arrest should apologize to Mr Pullen, ASAP!
Also, I find it obscene to arrest this guy for speeding on the freeway while those in the bush administration who ordered the crimes of torture, outing an active CIA Agent during a time of WAR, and wiretapping Americans walk free with no fear of arrest.
What incredible hypocrisy!
People get arrested for going this fast all the time. This wasn't just an average speeding occurrence. It is a law, and should be enforced just like any other.
Yes, I have exceeded the speed limit.
No, I have never driven 109 mph. I don't think most people have.
This was a reasonable arrest.
I can't fault the guy, I'm quite the lead foot myself.
do you regularly drive 50 MPH OVER the speed limit?
He should plead "not guilty," and tell the judge that going that fast was necessary (with all deliberate speed) in order to move the party of the 19th Century into the 21st :)
LMAO!!! (Does that mean he had McCain in the back of the car??????)
