After winning over Congress in the midterm elections, Republicans said they understood that the American people want jobs. Since the midterm election, the Lame Duck session and the swearing in of the new 112th Congress on January 5, 2011, there has not been one single jobs bill to be introduced by our new Republican Congress. Instead, the Republican Congress has been busy introducing bills to end health care reform, end health insurance for pre-existing conditions, and change the definition of rape and other unrelated job measures. From the beginning, Republican legislators made clear that they went to Washington to undo things instead of going to do things.

Back when the Republicans were campaigning, they constantly talked about jobs, jobs and jobs. But, since starting on January 5, 2011, the Republicans have done nothing to create jobs. Republicans held votes on 11 bills and not a single one of those votes created a single job for a single American. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell declared on February 12, 2011 that President Obama's legislative agenda is "over" but said the GOP is willing to work to do what they "think is right for America." With no jobs on their agenda, so far, it appears that Republicans must now think jobs are wrong for Americans.

Assistant Democratic Leader Rep. James Clyburn (D. SC) says:

I come from a district and a state where unemployment is unacceptably high and too many people have been out of work for much too long. I honestly wish the Republican majority would focus on commonsense, pragmatic ways to create American jobs. If they decide to do this, they will find me a willing partner. But let's stop these shenanigans like we're seeing today.

Last week, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee ( "DCCC") started the website WhenAreTheJobs.com to count the days that are running without a jobs bill being introduced. And last week, Republicans introduced a spending bill that would reduce the number of police on the streets. That eliminates jobs instead of creating them. The new Republican Congress has also focused on an extreme anti-choice agenda. They have gone from trying to re-define rape to allowing hospitals to refuse abortion care to women who will die without it. Politicians want to make government smaller by making it "just small enough to fit inside our bedrooms and our medicine cabinets" says NARAL Pro Choice America President Keenan. So bottom line is the Republicans, who campaigned on jobs and keeping government smaller, are failing to live up to their promise.

Everyday citizens cannot just stand idly by waiting for our lawmakers to introduce jobs. We have a democracy and must work towards making it work for Americans. There is no greater priority than getting Americans back to work. We are still a government of the people, by the people and for the people. We must be the change that we want.

On the issue of jobs, we should be non-partisan and united together. That's the lesson of the Egyptian revolution. In the words of one online comment, we need to be out on the streets and not return until we get our legislators to address jobs. We need to be the Egyptians now right here in the United States. Progressives held the One Nation rally for jobs and education in October, 2010 and then quietly went home. Jon Stewart held the nonpolitical Rally for Sanity. We need an organized and peaceful rally focused on the jobs issue. Then, we need to take it to the airwaves, the Internet and our legislators' offices on Capitol Hill. We have democracy and freedom of speech and peaceful assembly, yet some now take it for granted. Many Americans have become passive in their civic engagement. With peaceful assembly, freedom of speech and televised coverage, Dr. Martin Luther King and civil rights supporters helped to bring about the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Now more than ever, we need to take action to bring about the jobs and social change we need.

Yesterday I read in my CPA journal that more than 3 million more jobs will be sent overseas in the next 4 years. This time it will be done by small business, not big companies, and the jobs will be professional office type jobs, not manufacturing. We can't afford to lose 3 million jobs by 2015!!

Our lawmakers need to penalize companies that do this. No other way will they stop.

I think you misunderstand the fundamental difference between Republicans and Democrats. Democrats believe jobs are created by "Jobs Bills" that spend money to create jobs. Often these bills create some jobs, but are even more likely to be inefficient uses of money that results in little tangible difference in the economy. On the other hand, Republicans support a view that believes getting rid of health-care reform (which undoubtedly will make business at least somewhat more difficult due to increased rules and regulations), getting spending under control so a credit crisis is not constantly looming over the economy, simplifying the tax code and regulation, and keeping tax rates stable if not lower are the best ways to create jobs. Whether you agree with this view or not, they are, in their minds at least, working to create jobs. If you disagree with their method then I encourage you to write about that and propose better alternatives.

At a press conference on Tuesday, 2/15, House Speaker John Boehner said that if jobs are lost as a result of GOP spending cuts then "so be it". Regardless of whether it's by introducing bills which yes, the GOP should be doing to create jobs and/or by any other means necessary, the GOP now takes a callous attitude for jobs for Americans.
02:44 PM on 02/15/2011
A fuller quote was "If some of those jobs are lost so be it. We're broke." As I said before, Republicans believe that one of the central methods of stabilizing the economy is by putting an end to fiscal profligacy. If they really believe an overly large federal government causes jobs to be lost in the private sector then it's logical to be okay with job losses in the federal government.

If the logic went that we should keep unproductive workers on the federal payroll so we don't lose jobs then why don't we just send checks to people and tell them to stay home? I believe Democrats are being overly simplistic in that regard. Republicans want to create productive private sector jobs.

Again, I think you'll still find it difficult to accuse them of not caring about jobs.
05:04 PM on 02/15/2011
So you believe we should just continue to spend till its all gone? Oh wait it is all gone.
09:43 AM on 02/15/2011
looks like its going to take much pressure to get politicians to even talk about jobs.
06:41 AM on 02/15/2011
Thank You Debbie Hines!
Republicans should be asked…EVERY DAY…by EVERY DEMOCRAT…â€and how does that create jobs?â€
I called the office of John Boehner and 5 other Republicans, including the sponsor of this last round of tax cuts to the rich last week.
I asked each of them to refer me to studies that show how many jobs they expect to be created by this last round of tax cuts.
In other words, what are we getting for spending $700 billion?
NONE of them had an answer.
That’s what the Democrats are losing to.

Thank you and yes, I agree. Dems should be calling Republicans to ask how do their bills and now proposed budget create jobs. And then we need to take to the Internet and airwaves to give their answers. We must call them out on their reneging on the jobs issue each and every day.
11:17 PM on 02/14/2011
How 'bout "Dems to Obama: When are the jobs coming back?"

Didn't the tax cuts for the rich ensure jobs for "the rest of us"?

Isn't that why Obama supported extending them?

Please......

Nice finger-pointing....

How 'bout we focus on getting Obama to quit governing like a Republican?

Wrong, and NO. You need to get your facts straight before finger-pointing yourself.

The mantra you've pointed out above is a Republican one. The reason why CONGRESS extended tax cuts for the rich is because the REPUBLICANS held the extension of UNEMPLOYMENT benefits hostage. And right before Christmas too, when most would see their benefits stop.

But nice try, trying to blame the President and the Democrats for the REPUBLICANS egregious pandering to the elite.
10:46 AM on 02/15/2011
Interestingly Obama took credit for lowering taxes in his pre-Superbowl interview. He didn't come off as feeling like he was forced to do it then.
03:41 PM on 02/15/2011
WRONG

He aped those Repug talking points when he called for their continuance.

Time to get your facts straight.

Your precious Obama is a Republican.

He ADOPTED those talking points and the bankrupt "economic policy" behind them.

The ONLY qualifier he used was the current, deep recession.

Net effect - he lended credibility to the bankrupt Republican economic policies of trickle-down, cutting taxes is an economic stimulus, etc

lame

I suspect that if the jobs picture doesn't improve and the GOP tries to fiddle with the entitlements part of the budget the President will come out against any further extension of the Bush tax cuts in next year's presidential dustup. The GOP will not be allowed to cut Medicare/Medicade while still calling for those lower rates on the wealthy that are busting our deficit. Social Security will be a no-no for as long as Obama can hold on to his office.

And it's exactly that overcritical stance by the left that ensured the President was weakened in last election.

Keep at it, TLS. Soon, you can p*ss and moan to your heart's content when the Republicans retake the Senate and WH. Wouldn't your life be grand!

If anyone was expecting the GOP to live up to their promises, then they are seeing the world through rose color glasses. The GOP have no interest in reviving the economy. Their only interest is making sure that the economy tanks even more so that they can blame the Democratic Senate and President. Somewhere in their warped minds they believe that this will cinch them taking over the Senate and White House.

If they actually thought it through, it might just dawn on their jobs will be on the block come election day.

One month for a party that does not control the Senate or Presidency to create jobs.

They have not introduced one job in that one month. There was a huge legislative agenda that was introduced during the first month of 2009, and many of those items were geared to improving the lot of the middle class person.

It didn't take them very long to introduce the law to repeat health care, so they have certainly had enough time to introduce a jobs bill.

Repubs are focusing on taking away women's rights, whether you agree with them or not, and putting people out of work by cutting budgets that pay for police, teachers, etc. They're not only not creating jobs, they are pushing a budget that will take away jobs. The stimulus bill passed by the dems created jobs, not enough it's true, but it was creation not destruction.

You forgot the millions of jobs that were lost during the Bush years. The GOP not only did the same thing that you are blaming the Dems for (short time) and they made sure that it didn't happen. The GOP should change their name to GOOP - the Grand Old Obstructionist Party.

No surprise here. It is what we all were saying would happen if we ever allowed the GOP back in the house.

What is surprising, I suppose, is all the surprise coming from those thinking the GOP were telling the truth about their focus on jobs. When have they ever been in support of that and reflected it in their agenda or legislation? I would say never. They simply want you to fend on your own, tell you what you can and cannot do in your bedroom and in your life, and let the plunderers in the Church and Big Business run America as they see fit.
05:44 PM on 02/14/2011
Your giving them one month to create jobs? Really? When the Dems had control over the last two years and there have been nothing but job losses.
06:43 PM on 02/14/2011
Lie and you should know it. There was job growth for the first time since Clinton's administration -- in other words there was no job growth and only job loss during 8 years of Bush. The blood bath of layoffs happened in W's last year as president as well as the plan to give 700 billion with no accountability to wall street. It is interesting that in the lead up to the elections there was a great deal of vowing that jobs would be #1 priority, plans in place to lead immediately so now when all that is done is an attempt to cut jobs for police and fire personnel and put more government restrictions on women it tells me nothing is new, Republicans will lie, cheat and steal to get back in power to protect THEIR jobs. Your job? You are on your own.

Anybody who voted for the Republicans thinking that they had any intention of addressing jobs once they took office was duped. Their agenda was and still is tax cuts for the wealthy, eliminating anything that seems like an entitlement, getting rid of reproductive rights for women, removing any vestiges of labour unions and protecting large corporations from regulations. As for the Democrats who stayed home on election day thinking that they'd punish the party by showing their disgust at not having 30 years of mess turned around over night, they punished all of us by unleashing more c/rap that will have to be cleaned up.
05:45 PM on 02/14/2011

But not everybody that worked during the last 30 years got the benefit that wealthy people were accorded through a tax structure designed for trickle down economics. It didn't trickle down. So now middle class and less wealthy people are being asked to sacrifice without benefit of the enhancement that their working should have provided, like with wealthy people. That's the complaint.
