Deborah Jacobs has served as executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) since 1999. In this role she oversees a broad range of programs and campaigns that promote and defend civil liberties.

Before taking the helm in New Jersey, Jacobs held positions at the ACLU of Eastern Missouri in St. Louis and the ACLU of Washington in Seattle, where she began her ACLU career fresh out of college.

Under Jacobs’ leadership, and with a little help from the Bush Administration, the ACLU-NJ has grown dramatically, doubling its membership and quadrupling its staff. The range of advocacy she directs most often concerns issues such as First Amendment rights, privacy, reproductive freedom, racial justice, police practices, gay and lesbian rights, discrimination and drug policy reform.

Jacobs grew up in Ellensburg, Washington, and currently lives in Newark, New Jersey. She holds a B.A. in English Literature and a M.A. in Liberal Studies from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. In 1990, she was a Fulbright Scholar in Helsinki, Finland.
