Is Obama the Most Famous Living Person Ever?

Barack Obama is the most famous living person in the history of the world.

I'm not trying to induce an acid flashback to John Lennon's infamous 1966 comment, "The Beatles are more popular than Jesus." But whether you measure fame in terms of saturation or sheer numbers, it seems indisputable to me that more people know at least something about the new American president than anyone alive, at this point -- or any -- in the planet's existence.

Who else could it be? One friend suggest Muhammad Ali, another Princess Diana, and a third said Bill Clinton. Surely all are global brands with enormous reach and broad appeal. But all fall short of the man-meets-the-moment frenzy unleashed by Obama.

To be sure, the digital revolution has made this feat of fame possible. Not only has it helped the son of an erstwhile Kenyan goatherd to become president, it has allowed a current Kenyan goatherd to follow the former's journey. And he is not alone. Exponential growth in access to the Internet, satellite television and radio, cell phones, and P.D.A.'s means that breaking news now reaches virtually every corner of the globe. At the same time, population continues to grow; there are now some 6.7 billion men, women, and children on earth, an historic high.

But technology and biology don't totally explain the Obama phenomenon. There's no denying that the world has been utterly captivated by the new American president with the international pedigree. His black African father, white American mother, Muslim middle name, and childhood spent partially in Asia make him more than the 21st-century embodiment of the classic American melting pot; his story makes him accessible to people the world over who might see in his life a few scenes from their own.

That someone like Obama could be elected president of the United States -- with its unrivaled power and prestige -- has begun to restore the country's and the world's faith in America as the land of opportunity. Gone is the hunkered-down defensiveness of the past eight years, the lock-the-doors, draw-the-curtains, load-the-guns-to-keep-out-the-bad-guys mentality that turned so much of the world against us. In its place is the restoration of that classic American optimism, eyes lifted to the horizon, reaching out across continents and oceans, not in fear, but with faith that we can help build a better world. It was no accident that President Obama's first televison interview from the White House went not to an American network but to an Arab one.

As Obama himself has acknowledged again and again, he begins his first term at a moment of profound crisis. The road ahead with be difficult, as gauzy goals give way to difficult decisions, and people from Chicago to Cairo, to Nairobi, find reasons to be disappointed. But at least for the moment, Obama has made America cool again -- and more than that, he's made his own brand arguably the most powerful the world has ever known.

with all do respect. Michael jackson is the most well known, recognizable living human being in the world. I would also like to add that I am an avid supporter of President Obama (man it feels nice to say that) since his democratic address in 2004. Guinness book of world records stated Michael jackson you are undoubtedly the worlds most famous living human being. He's sold over 750 million records world wide, 410 awards, and his music video Black and White was watched by more the 500 million viewers. from germany to japan to brazil he's known all over. however by the end of baracks presidency he'll be th most famous living person. my next door neighbor was a peace keeper in a small country called Lesotho. the village he was staying in had no power and the closest town with power was over 50 miles away. but they did have a cassette player. with the thriller album. my ex girl friend was turkish. i ask her when she moved out her last year. have you heard of jay z? no, have you heard of Bill clinton? no, have you heard of michael jordan? no, have you heard of MIchael Jackson? yes, Barack Obama? yes, David Beckham? yes.

I think you have a point. I'm living in a small Asian country, and when little kids on the street know who Obama is, then you know he's pretty popular.

As I commented on politicalwire with respect to this idea, this is easily disputable, with all due respect to the President. Marcus Licinius Crassus was easily more well-known in his day. In fact it is not even close.

See, but that's where you have it wrong - he didn't create his brand, the media created it for him and if he's the most famous man in the world it's because the media won't talk about anything else.

A few weeks ago I knew more about what Sasha and Melia were having for lunch rather than what was going on in Gaza.

Obama is definitely someone I look up to, but as for branding himself I would disagree - he just wants to continue his lifetime of service by taking a very tough job and lifting this country out of a huge mess.

It's very sad that it has taken so long for a true humanitarian to take office - you would have thought with 300 million people in this country that we could have spared ourselves the smarmy leadership of Bush, Clinton and Bush Sr.

I also definitely think if it wasn't for the economic crisis and Palin we would have a President McCain right now which is a very scary thought.

"Barack Obama is the most famous living person in the history of the world."? Which is it the most famous living person (meaning now) or the most famous living person in history (redundant since everyone, at some time, was alive.) Currently alive, you may have a document (although popularity is fleeting). Ever? Absolutely not. If that is your point then I would have to argue that you have a very limit knowledge of history.

Proletarian101, it would help your cause if you offered an alternative option, rather than just poopoo-ing Dee Dee's theory . I've been alive for 31 years, and I certainly don't remember a single human being capturing the imagination of as many people as Obama has.

Miss (Mrs? Ms?) Myers, I think you may be on to something...

31 years is but a blip in history. Do you actually believe 1000 to 2000 hears from now there will be the same following of Obama that there is today? As far as historical figures go, we can start with the obvious: Jesus and Mohammad. Then you could go for some of the slightly more secular with Gandi, and Mother Theresa. We can also look at notorious figures such as Hitler. As far as politicians you could argue that Bill Clinton is as well known as Obama, and maybe Tony Blair. JFK had a near mythical following after his death. I would dare say the Michael Jackson and John Lennon also have a legendary following throughout the world. Once you get outside the Western Cultures, following of the American politics drops dramatically. If you were to talk with the Indian and the Chinese, you would be surprise at how many do not have any knowledge of American Leaders and Politics but have very good knowledge of Western Entertainers.

His fame is different than those you mentioned. Fortunately, his fame is based on his great speeches and historic rise to become POTUS. Bill Clinton is famous for his illicit adulterous affair wtith a young college intern in the Oval Office. Michael Jackson is famous for his penchant for sleeping with young boys and then writing enormous checks to their families. Mohammad Ali is famous for dodging the draft and for enduring punishing blows to the head during his reign as the heavyweight champ. Sadly, the result of those blows has caused him severe brain damage.

I'm afraid it's (still) probably Michael Jackson. I know he hasn't done anything for years, but he was and remains (albeit to a lesser degree) inescapable.

Dee Dee --

Yes, Obama is the most famous living person . . .

but don't tell Rush . . . or Bill.

Let them live in their delusions -- it's much more amusing this way.

Living? Read the article... Hell, read the headline.

Actually, I owe you an apology... Upon re-reading the headline myself, it's kind of confusing.

Most famous person living, or ever? Most famous person currently living, or most famous person that lived? Ever?

Please clarify Dee Dee.

The one known the world over at the deepest saturation, while living, at any given time during recorded history. That seems to be the meaning. Jesus and Buddha were not into fame, in fact, or from what I have been able to understand, they had no concept of the term in relationship to expressing their nature...and so we trust this is true for Obama, that his spirit is pure and he serves not for fame but for something much higher than mere self-interest.

Thank you Dee Dee. If Barack continues to achieve what he has achieved during the past few days, he may become immortal by joining our Presidents represented on Mount Rushmore.

By the way, with due respect for our current Press Secretary, I wish the President had chosen you for that position.

Please, let us hear more from you.
