Marco Rubio, A Trojan Horse For The GOP

Posted: 08/31/11 12:29 AM ET

Senator Marco Rubio is no Senator Mel Martinez.

After all, Rubio is the Tea Party darling that has been beating the anti-immigrant drum for several months now. On the other hand, Mel Martinez was a champion for pro-immigration policies and Latino-related issues.

The Trojan Horse trick comes from a mythological story about Greeks tricking the Trojans in the City of Troy to end a conflict. The Greeks needed to get into the Trojan community so they built a huge wooden horse and hid a Greek force of 30 men and spies inside of it. Later that night, the Greek army was able to enter and destroy the city of Troy, which eventually ended the war.

While the Trojan Horse may be a mere mythological story, in reality we see Rubio effectively being the trick that the Republican Party uses against Latinos. Rubio supported Arizona's harsh anti-immigrant law, he does not support the DREAM Act, in essence punishing children for the sins of their father, and now he fully supports Texas Republican Congressman Lamar Smith's national e-verify program. The United States has been pushing enforcement-only policies for over a decade now, and it has met all operational goals of the Bush Fence Act of 2006, which is why we believe it is time to seek legal immigration reform.

In light of the Presidential elections, I see the Tea Party Republicans wanting to use Rubio as a tool that contradicts their own economic principles. The Tea Party was supposed to be for less government, less taxes, and government entitlement reform; however, early on in their movement, they have allowed anti-immigrant politicians their microphone to preach the "anti-Latino and anti-immigrant message." Republicans have forgotten that the GOP has indeed supported immigration amnesty for years under the Cuban Adjustment Act (CAA). Far right extremists are accusing President Obama of giving amnesty to immigrants, when he merely wants to focus on deporting the real criminal element of the undocumented first. It shows good stewardship of our taxpayer money to focus on the real criminal element because it is moronic to waste millions of dollars to detain farm workers, fast food workers and nannies.

With the mounting debt crisis, it makes sense to focus on dangerous criminals first, which would save millions in taxpayer dollars. Congressman Smith was the chief architect of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (IIRIRA), where 287(g) language was inserted that effectively created bureaucracies that are wasting millions of our taxpayer dollars, and a monster like Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona. According to a report by the Department of Homeland Security, the 287(g) resources have not been focused on undocumented immigrants who pose the greatest risk. Officers have not been trained or supervised properly, and costs have increased from $5 million in 2006 to $55 million in 2010 -- this shows us that Smith's Act does not work. The results of IIRIRA have been very poor, and it appears we might be headed towards the same ideas from the Neanderthal Age.

Under the unique Cuban amnesty program, Cuban immigrants can receive at least one year of government entitlements once their foot touches American soil. Since the Tea Party claims to be champions of government entitlement reform, it will simply be a matter of time before they want to do away with the CAA and their government entitlements, too. The Tequila Party supports the CAA, however, we also believe it is just as important to address the other immigrants who are living here in the shadows of society. We know the immigration system is broken so we need to fix it by implementing comprehensive legal immigration reform, but without the government entitlements offered to Cuban immigrants. I believe Americans can still afford to give newly arrived Cuban immigrants their benefits, but understand that we cannot give the millions who are living in the shadows the same.

Rubio's main Latino constituency in Florida are of Cuban descent, therefore we believe he doesn't understand, feel or hear the outcry experienced by Mexicans and other Latin groups who do not receive the privilege of automatic citizenship given to Puerto Ricans, or to Cuban immigrants. Instead, he chooses to support unreasonable enforcement-only policies with Senator Jim DeMint and Congressman Smith.

In the last year, we have witnessed anti-immigrant organizations like NumbersUSA and the Tea Party movement align themselves with Latino Republican politicians who will support their similar anti-immigrant policies. They use the Cuban community who benefit from unique amnesty to attack those of Mexican descent because Mexicans account for a significant 67% chunk of the total Latino population.

The actions of Tea Party members and anti-immigrant GOP politicians are clear when they implement legislative bills to curb future Mexican-American voters. Republicans have been attacking the Constitution via the 14th Amendment because they don't believe all babies born on American soil are citizens anymore. This is unfortunate because we believe immigrants and children born of immigrants are the new taxpayers that will sustain the future American economy.

The Tea Party Republicans may try to trick Latinos using politicians like Rubio with their continued efforts in attacking our rights by going after the largest segment of the entire Latino population (or those of Mexican descent); however, in the end what is to say that these same Tea Party anti-immigrant Republicans will not try to eliminate the Cuban Adjustment Act and their government entitlements, too? Do the 14th Amendment changes being proposed by extremists affect the Cuban immigrant community, too?

Indeed, within the last decade the Republican Party has transformed since 2000 when they used to fight to keep Elian Gonzales as Latinos galvanized themselves in Florida. Now we see the GOP using Marco Rubio as a Trojan Horse today to deport the "Mexican equivalents" to Elian Gonzales, and this will only serve to galvanize Latinos in the entire southwest against Republicans during the 2012 election cycle.

Rubio is pretty typical of most South Florida politicians. He plays up his Cuban roots, sings the praises of Reagan mythology, and blissfully sells out his constituents' interests for his own political advancement. The GOP's policy towards minorities is one of tokenism. We saw this when they replaced an intellectual and moral heavyweight like Thurgood Marshall with a corrupt minion like Clarence Thomas. In Elected offices we see the GOP running tokens in districts that they feel a real god fearing christian white man cannot be competitive so they get someone who looks like the district but is weak and pliable to their orders. Many of these people including Rubio do not even get half of the Latino vote but get just enough (usually 30-36%) to nullify the Latino vote as an effective swing vote which is their true intention in running someone like him to parrot the GOP's anti Latino agenda. The problem with GOP parrots like Rubio (Or  Duckspeakers as Orwell would call them) is that sooner or later the public will realize that they are impoverishing their district or state by serving outside interests of the Party over those of their constituents...

All Americans, except for descendants of the Native population, are descendants of immigrants. So, which groups do you include when you say "Americans?" You seem to want to exclude Latinos. Who else do you exclude?

"The problem with GOP parrots like Rubio ... is that sooner or later the public will realize that they are impoverishing their district or state by serving outside interests of the Party over those of their constituents."

That is so right on, Max. Rubio is very much engaged in what non-candidate Sarah Palin called "crony capitalism" in her speeches this past weekend.

He is a parrot, a very good and cunning one. Lovely plumage! Lots of feathers from Jeb Bush, and I expect Rubio will be introducing legislation this next session, courtesy of ALEC, in which his chief of staff Cesar Conda is quite involved.

Yeah, I'm feeling lazy tonight, but if anyone seems interested I'll post some links (I'd have to go back and find them - and HuffPo word counts!) but alternately you could Google Rubio+Conda and Conda+ALEC. Interesting stuff.

If what you want in a politician is a man/woman who will listen to the wants and needs of his/her constituents, rather than monied business people or who always votes according to some rigid ideology, Rubio is not your guy.

Uh you mean just like Obama was to blacks? Please, please tell me what qualified Obama to be president other than being black? The answer is nothing. Finally, the American people are figuring out what a ruse all that "hope and change" nonsense really was. This man is wholly unqualified for the post. All he has done is run for elected office since law school.

I don't see Rick Perry and Marco Rubio getting along. I also don't see Rick Perry winning, and Rubio is smart enough to manage his political career better than hitching his wagon to a losing horse. I think that association would tarnish Rubio's reputation in FL, and many voters might feel betrayed.

These are, of course, just my opinions.

Obama tells the Latino's everything they want to hear while his policies dry up the job market. No jobs, no opportunity, no reason to stay here. An effective immigration policy without calling it
immigration- policy. Stop the construction of those fences....Obama's approach is more effective.

Rubio is living proof, as is Scott, that Florida needs to be 2 states.
Northern Florida needs to get it over with and become South Alabama.

I think Latinos are smart enough to see past the Hispanic sounding last name, don't you? I mean, don't you think the Trojan Horse thing is a little patronizing? Rubio has said, quite clearly, that he's against illegal immigration and any kind of amnesty. That view is shared by the majority of Americans who are overwhelmingly in favor of enforcement of our existing immigration laws, so it doesn't seem to me that he's out to fool anyone. Also, it seems you're suggesting that Latinos all think the same way. I'm sure there are Latinos who believe in the rule of law. I'm sure there are some who think that immigrants should come here legally, speak English, be well educated, and be self supporting.

It sounds like your Party is just another open borders front like La Raza. You'll fight any and all enforcement of our immigration laws.

And when you're referring to the anti-immigrant Republicans, who exactly are you talking about? I'm a legal immigrant; I speak English; I have a valuable skill; I'm self-supporting; and I support my children without assistance from the U.S. taxpayer. Republicans aren't anti people like me; they're anti-illegal immigration. You should try being less disingenous.

Referencing Greek mythology is cool and all, but it has to, you know, actually be applicable. Better luck next time, sweetie.

No, The Tequila Party Leader of New Mexico has stated that several Latinos had no idea that the likes of Governor Susana Martinez of New Mexico would fight so hard to take undocumented drivers' licenses away. But, make no mistake, all we have to do moving forward is providing a score card with regard to all politicians who are running for office that will make it clear who is immigrant friendly and who is not. PROBLEM SOLVED. We learn quickly.

"Better luck next time, sweetie." Now THAT is patronizing. BTW, your use of the phrase "speak English" speaks volumes about your disingenuousness.

Immigrants to this country should speak English. Do you know what 'disingenuous' means, sweetie?

It is well known in California that Latinos have a strong work ethic. They take jobs no one else will and work hard for low pay. So, it's not surprising that when a Latino politician spouts the Republican mantra of self-reliance, individual responsibility, and success through hard work, that Latino voters will respond favorably. What they don't understand is that the powers-that-be behind that message are happy with the status quo. They want the Latino workers to remain hard-working, non-union, and either Republican or apolitical.

We are tired of the status quo, we want the immigration system to be fixed so that those living in the shadows of society can live with dignity and contribute their hard work ethic to the American economy. Immigrants will raise the standard of American living as that has always been the case.

I'm a fifth generation Mexican-American, m'kay? Perhaps you should go back and take a basic Economics 101 course and discover how immigrants have spared the American economy. Thanks!
11:43 AM on 09/01/2011
If that is true, it has no relevance to the fact that living in this country is not a universal human right. We are a nation of laws (per our president) and we have every right to enforce them across the board.
08:22 AM on 09/02/2011
Study after study proves the benefits of immigrants, but as we all know, those studies refer to legal immigrants and not illegals. Again, it's disingenuous to lump illegals in with those of us who did it the right way.

Would Mexican-Americans give a toss about illegals if the majority weren't Mexican? No, of course not. Talk about self-serving.

Latinos, like anyone else, have a mind of their own. The GOP does not need to ``sell`` candidates. The latinos, as well as the rest of the nation, will figure out who to vote for, by protecting the best interests of America.

Rubio is awesome not bc he is latino--but because he truly is ethical and upstanding!
It's the person.. The GOP is NOT using him as this biased article suggests. They are trying to get latinos mad and not vote for him bc of the gop

Talk about hypocitical (less government), have you ever heard of Radio Marti?,,,,Thats a couple of million a year thrown away on appeasing the Cuban vote in South Florida. Would Marco Rubio go against the GOP in cutting waste, would he cut the millions spent on Radio Marti?, would he go against his Republican constituents?

After his recent comments that SS and Medicare have "weakened" the American character, I don't see Rubio going very far on a national level.

Marco Rubio is one of the most ethically based politicains I have seen.
When I see people spin him and use that he came from a latino background I get very mad.
That is NOT the reason he admired. Mr. Rubio portrays all the best someone in office should be.
I don't care if you are latino, black, white, asian, Jewish, Mormon, Christian...
I look at the politicans ethics and how there records are. Rubio has it all.
He would make a great president someday...Maybe VP in 2012.
There are a few in all parties I feel have it....but this admin as is-is not working...
Rubio is intelligent, calm, not ethically challenged (for those PC people)...He would have my vote..because he is genuine...

Marco Rubio denies justice to others when several of his Floridian constituents receive Cuban amnesty. Not only do they receive amnesty, they receive government benefits without first contributing taxes into the system. I think it is fair to legalize immigration reform without the gov't benefits for the millions here who contribute...are part of the non-criminal element of the undocumented.
