Israel's massive assault on Gaza is the worst sort of déjà vu all over again. As news commentators wearily point out that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a never-ending story, there are shifts in that story. The most important was George Bush's decision to studiously ignore the whole problem. For eight years the U.S. has abandoned its responsibility to broker peace. The result has been an ongoing catastrophe. No one needs reminding of that.

Give peace a chance !
Deepak, where do you think Britain stands in all this? What should they be doing to broker peace?
The best plan will never work as long as Israel and the Palestinians don't want peace. And I believe that the current set of leaders on both sides do not want peace. I recall during the Clinton admin when we ahd a few years of actual peace between the two. The borders were open, trade was flowing nicely and people actually started to live normal lives. There weren't an ysuicide bombings for 2 or more years if I recall correctly. But then Israel held an election and picked Sharon - someone who defintiely didn't want peace.
One of Sharon's first acts was to "spit in th e face" of the Palestinians when he went to a section of Jerusalem even though HE KNEW it would cause problems. Sure enough after that there was a call for an antifada and it was all downhill from there.
