The Real Secret to Staying Healthy for Life (Part 3)

Because the campaign to get people to practice prevention isn't being followed up with compliance, American health is at risk. This is true financially, of course, as the cost of caring for an aging population rises precipitously. But it's even more alarming to consider that 95 cents of every health care dollar is spent after a disease has appeared. Preventive medicine isn't part of a physician's everyday routine, which is spent dispensing drugs and performing surgery.

This leaves the responsibility of lifelong health on you and me, which is where it belongs.

In the previous posts I proposed that the secret to lifelong health is letting your body take care of you, as it was designed to do. That is ultimately the point of prevention, to support the body's own power to heal, balance, and regulate itself. Since the control switch for these processes is in the brain, we need to cover an all-important issue: creating the best inner environment for your brain. Your brain processes every experience you have, and it must function well in order for the real controller of your life -- the mind -- to make its best intentions known.

The intention to live as long as possible isn't one of the mind's best intentions, because quantity isn't the same as quality. Intending to live in a state of well-being is a higher intention, since it focuses on quality, but few people have devised a credible recipe for well-being. There is no recipe. Well-being changes as we move through life, which is why a child's version of it cannot be the same as an old person's. So what is the common factor that never changes as we age?

The answer is self-awareness. When you have any experience, your mind is in one of three states: unconscious, aware, and self-aware. The first state leaves health -- and well-being generally -- to chance. If you light up your fifth cigarette of the day without thinking, you are doing something unconsciously, as is the nature of habits. If you see yourself lighting up the cigarette, you are aware of what you're doing. But self-awareness goes further; it says, "What am I doing to myself?" Posing questions, reflecting on your behavior, looking at the larger picture, taking your life seriously -- these are all self-aware behaviors.

The mind and body are connected in a feedback loop, and it will operate automatically without any awareness, much less self-awareness. Someone in a coma is an extreme example of the automatic nature of the body's feedback loop being monitored by the brain's automatic mechanisms. The feedback changes when you add awareness, which is why it is better to be awake than in a coma. The best way to participate in the feedback loop, however, is through self-awareness. In that state you tune into your body and lead your brain's responses in a positive way.

A self-aware approach to life would include the following prescriptions, which were drawn up by Dr. Rudy Tanzi and myself when we co-wrote a forthcoming book, Super Brain:

  • Be passionate about your life and the experiences you fill it with.
  • Remain open to as much input as possible.
  • Don't shut down the feedback loop with judgment, rigid beliefs, and prejudices.
  • Don't censor incoming data through denial.
  • Examine other points of view as if they were your own.
  • Take possession of everything in your life. Be self-sufficient.
  • Work on psychological blocks like shame and guilt -- they falsely color your reality.
  • Free yourself emotionally -- to be emotionally resilient is the best defense against growing rigid.
  • Harbor no secrets -- they create dark places in the psyche.
  • Be willing to redefine yourself every day.
  • Don't regret the past or fear the future. Both bring misery through self-doubt.

There is a spiritual component to self-awareness that consists of expanding your consciousness through meditation, mindfulness, and other established spiritual practices. But in this list we wanted to tell people how to function efficiently in the mind-body feedback loop. From birth each of us has been part of the loop, dependent upon it for all the good things in our lives, doing our best not to bring in bad things. But most people don't pursue self-awareness. They equate it with feeling bad about themselves, turning over stones that are best untouched, and exposing the darker hiding places where anxiety, depression, and anger lurk. None of this is true. Self-awareness is value-free. It isn't scary. It doesn't imply that you will subject yourself to needless pain.

At its most basic, self-awareness is simply self-appreciating the self. To find an answer to a question we are all interested in -- "How am I doing?" -- you have to be willing to look in the first place. It is much more beneficial to your health if you feel your way through life than think your way through life. Self-awareness monitors how you feel. It is flexible, sometimes placing awareness on a bodily sensation, sometimes on the world around you, your relationships, the people you meet, the thoughts in your head, and so on. To be in such a state means that you are fully participating in the mind-body feedback loop. By doing so, you make your body and your brain into allies, and then the path to lifelong health can be followed in security and fulfillment.

Well, I have mixed feelings after reading this article. My mom's boss died a couple of days ago from a heart attack. He was 62. He had a family history of heart disease, his brother died at 29. He did everything to stop the triggering factors from the base. He was very proactive on prevention: didn't drink or smoke, kept a healthy diet, exercised on a daily basis, was financially secure, led a happy, stress-free life. And it didn't help him. It's hard to escape a disease if it runs in your family. Genetics can put a damper on your whole >stay healthy< endeavor. Flawed genetic makeup doesn’t automatically peg you as a lost cause but when I hear about people who fought hard and died anyway, it makes me angry cause it proves that we’re helpless in the face of a genetic disease. Still, it’s better to stay upbeat: 80% of the immune is located in the digestive system. It puts a lot of responsibility on our eating habits and lifestyle patterns. Over-eating, eating on the run, poor food combining in conjunction with genetic susceptibility can put you on a fast track to an early grave.

This is what happens when America has a "for profit" healthcare system -- to providers, it's a better deal to have us get sick (we spend more money) than spend less on preventive care. In addition, this is a greater problem with the poor -- who have worse health profiles and life conditions. Little preventive care and HUGE costs when they get ill -- and, YOU pay for this in taxes or higher health insurance premiums.

ObamaCare is a good start to change this but we need much, much more!

Obamacare is funneling more money to the elites at the top of the "for profit" system you talk about. It strengthens the status quo and criminalizes self-sufficiency.

Obamacare is a step in the opposite direction any serious thinking progressive would want to go.

People care more about party loyalty than they do about whether we actually do something to help the poor. That is the only reason Democrats have stood by Obamacare.

@jay42 -- I don't agree. ObamaCare attempts to cover most of the 50+ million Americans with no insurance. People do not have coverage. I agree with you the "system" is broken; how do YOU want to fix that?

ObamaCare is pragmatic. While you're trying to get the nuts in Washington to agree on reform (good luck), we have to cover those without. ObamaCare, similar to RomneyCare, is one innovation. Does money go to top elites -- yes, that is our system today. Does it retain "for profit" design; yep! Hillary tried to move us into something less greedy but you know that history.

Progressives want changes such as single payer. Why allow profit simply to pay the bill? Democrats stood by ObamaCare because it's a good step in the right direction. I, as a progressive, have a plan to control exploding medical care costs. Do you? One day you'll join us demanding reform. You'll never get it through Republican processes -- they simply limit access. They'll give you a voucher and wish you "good luck."

Every other advanced nation is the world has socialized medicine in some form. They don't suffer our problems; have better overall outcomes; and pay less. Standing your ground on this is foolish!

Very scary read about denial or lack of comprehension to the above message in this comment section this time. This is the first time I read a Deepak piece and found it clear and true beyond my naive bias toward him. We can control the things, which we have the power over, that affect us... If one chooses to exert ones personal "self awareness".

I do have an understanding about the mind-body connection. However, if I break my hip, I'm going to have a hip replacement rather that lie around willing it to heal on its own. If I get a staph infection, then I will go on long term IV antiobiotics rather than try a homeopathic remedy. If there are times I have an asthma attack, I will use my inhalers, and take steroids if I have to, because if it comes down to being able to breathe or take medications, breathing wins out everytime. If I have a wound that won't heal after months and months of wound vac therapy and eating all the protein I can, I will have surgery to close up that wound in order to prevent further infection. If my appendix ruptures, then I will have surgery to correct that and take IV antiobiotics to cure the infection from that. If I have low blood pressure to the point of passing out, I will take medication to raise it and also eat salty foods. Or can one raise blood pressure by meditating?

You are not comprehending what Chopra is trying to convey to his readers. Obviously if you have an asthma attack you should use your inhaler. But that doesn't mean you cannot use your mind to help control your attacks. He is not discrediting western medicine nor is he being bias about eastern medicines. He is making a point that the mind has the ability to influence the body in both positive and negative ways. Being "self aware" potentially can allow human beings to be more in tune with their physical bodies. Thus potentially preventing illness. People need to stop trying to shutdown good approaches to the mental and physical aspects of our bodies that well educated professionals propose. Stop being so negative and think outside the box...

I don't believe you're comprehending what Chopra is trying to convey to his readers. Regarding your example, if you are having an asthma attack, of course use your inhaler. He is not saying to use "self awareness" during an asthma attack instead of your inhaler. I believe what Chopra is saying is that the mind has the potential to influence the body. He is saying that your sense of "self" can be utilized in a way to help potentially prevent illness from surfacing. He is in no way discrediting western medicine nor is he being bias towards eastern. He is simply making a connection between mind and body and the influence they have on each other respectively. Don't let bias cloud your judgement of what it is to live a healthy life. He is asking you to be open-minded about our sense of "self" and the connection it has to our bodies well being.

Yes, I do comprehend what he is trying to say, but you will never get me to admit that there are times when people, through no fault of their own, don't need to rely on surgery and drugs. Otherwise I would be dead by now and unable to comment on this type of blog.
