Shock Doctrine at U.S. Postal Service: Is a Manufactured Crisis Behind Push Toward Privatization?

Posted: 09/27/11 07:38 PM ET

Today, postal workers and their supporters are holding events across the country to press their demand for repealing the benefit-funding mandate and push back against calls for their workplace to be privatized.

For months, Americans have heard dire warnings about the impending collapse of the United States Postal Service due to fiscal insolvency and a drop in the use of mail service. In early September, the U.S. Postmaster General told Congress that the USPS is close to default and unveiled a series of radical proposals to cut costs by firing up to 120,000 workers, closing several thousand facilities, scaling back deliveries, and reducing benefits for retirees.

But many postal workers say the much-touted crisis facing the U.S. Postal Service is not what it seems. They argue the greatest volume of mail handled in the 236-year history of the postal service was 2006. They also point to a 2006 law that forced the USPS to become the only agency required to fund 75 years of retiree health benefits over just a 10-year span, and say the law's requirements account for 100 percent of the service's $20 billion in losses over the previous four years, without which the service would have turned a profit.

Democracy Now! hosted a debate on the issue today between Chuck Zlatkin, the legislative and political director of the New York Metro Area Postal Union, and Gene Del Polito, president of the Association for Postal Commerce in Washington, D.C.:

Last week, Republicans introduced legislation to overhaul the USPS in response to a bill proposed by Democrats that would refund a reported $6.9 billion in over-payments to the USPS retirement plan, offer early retirement and voluntary separation incentives, adjust retiree benefits prepayment requirements, and preserve employee protections set out in collective bargaining agreements.

This bogus controversy really makes me mad. It is yet another assault by Wall Street wanting to eliminate their "non profit" competition. The Postal Service is woven into the fabric of American life. These people may be the only contact that some elderly and/or those in rural areas have with the outside world. Postal workers have delivered babies. Notified authorities when they notice potential trouble on their route. This manufactured insolvency is just like the BS trotted out about Social Security- which by the way is not broke.

We all can help by making some noise with our congressman, senators and the White House.

The USPS survived a revolution, a civil war, two world wars, a mini ice age, the Great Depression, and scores of epidemics, recessions, and other assorted crises. Yet it appears that it may not survive bagger-nomics. If anything should put into perspective the damage that these ideologues are doing to this country, this is it.

More crazy stuff from the "righties". This is so patently ideological that its laughable. Tea partyers and the GOTP need to get a grip on reality and stop to consider the damage they are doing.

Every time the GOP, and now the TP, get into the majority they try to "fix" everything overnight that they haven't been able to accomplish because no one would trust them enough to vote them into the majority.
So, now they're temporarily in the majority and we can see what's happening. Shut down, hostage-taking, "my way or the highway", "Hell No !, Default, etc.
Can you remember when government actually acted as a stable and well run organization ? Yes,....just before the TeaParty and GOP gained the majority..... Now, we have a group of politicians that are trying to do as much damage in as short a time as possible in order that they might have a chance to embarrass the present administration. Patriotic Eh ?
Results ? Almost a default. Reduction in credit (and credibility) rating. Gridlock.
So now, we want to follow their lead and "privatize" the Post Office ?
Aren't there some REAL problems they can attend to ? It seems thay have all this time to "solve" all these secondary and outlying situations but somehow can't get to the real problem that they ran for office on ? JOBS, JOBS, JOBS !!!!!

Damn Hypocrits !

If the government were a car, conservatives would have a plan. "You don't need those pesky doors-- look, seat belts! Drive slower, and no windshield will be necessary, especially now that we've outfitted the driver with goggles. No need for reverse or a rear view mirror-- we've got to keep moving forward! Take off the trunk lid, remove the backseat, all those dials and doohickeys in the dashboard-- heck, remove the dashboard-- less weight, more gas savings! Four wheels is at least one too many, so take one off. and move the remaining front wheel to the center-- and the cost of new tires is down 25%! Take off the roof! We'll take out the car on sunny days only! No need to keep gas in the tank between outings. And we'll lease the tires to somebody whenever we don't use the car! Savings in all directions!"

Later: "Look at that hunk of junk--- up on blocks, doors off, no roof, no place to sit in back, and you can't even back this heap out of the driveway, and if you could, as soon as you've gone twenty feet you're picking bugs out of your teeth! Seat belts make my tummy hurt. I told you this car was no good!"

Let's get rid of the last of the good jobs with good benefits. Privitization creates many problems that haven't been considered. Will the judiciary have to change its rules for service of process by U.S. mail? What protections are in place for mail delivered by private companies? You do realize that they will be delivering your bank statements, your children's mail?

It all began with that Bush. When in office this was just another area the Bush thug pushed for privation. Fight back. Just some more 'scare tactics' brought to you by the Repugs.

Postal Privatization in Japan is a total failure. It was pressurized by American Neocons and its running agents in Tokyo but only after several years implementation, it was revealed out that the Postal Privatization was a unfair transfer of public assetts into the hands of small number of oligarchies.
Now the it is only regarded as a Postal Destruction so implemented by the followers of Milton Friedman et al in Japan and the failure should be well publicized in the United States of America. Shock Doctrine of Postal Destruction was implemented nationwide in Japan, by the strong pressure of Bush administration and their agents in Tokyo.

Another example of how the right wing is winning the battle to completely privatize America by destroying institutions that provide good jobs and replacing them by giving contracts to their friends who pay lower wages and employ much less people. The worse than useless media has of course done no reporting on this aspect at all.
01:35 AM on 09/28/2011
"They" want to privatize the post office, so "they" make ridiculous demands like funding 75 years of retiree health benefits in a short time.
******Some of the future retirees may not even be born yet.

Manufactured crisis....."they" tell the American people the U.S. Postal Service is in trouble.....the people get scared and upset.....and "they" come up with the brilliant idea of privatization.
*****And it just might work.

Look at education.
Teachers are being demonized.
For two reasons.....to force teachers to accept lower wages and benefits AND to eventually privatize.
*****And it just might work.

"they" = politicians (all Repugs and who knows how many Dems)

The USPO needs to become the, "UNITED STATES PUBLIC OFFICES" and diversify if it is to survive. Each branch that survives needs to be a branch for cash only transactions for those that receive federal money--"THE UNITED STATES FEDERAL TREASUARY BANK". The same security ID equipment could provide passports and banking security ID (renewable in the month of birth of each depositor (AND ANY/ALL guardian/pwr of atty), decreasing the likelihood of fraud; also w/all federal payments going through the local branch--at least on in each county/parish/borough--could substantially reduce fraud, at least w/regard to paying dead people. Who would know better an area for purposes of census than long-time postal carriers? Why pay for a separate SSA, etc. space and security? DIVERSIFY. WIN WIN.

If the law passed in 2006.....that was a Repug president and a Repug majority in Congress......
Though I don't trust many Dems either.....

Sadly, our politicians are bought and paid for and work for the oligarchs.

Law was passed in 2006 - with every Democrat in Congress voting FOR it.
Also endorsed by all the postal unions - go figure......

As a small business owner I depend on USPS everyday for my online orders. Dear Mail Carriers I support you 100%! The lame duck GOP congress of 2006 successfully legislated a "Government is incompetent" scenario. GOP terrorism at it's best.

I as well have stopped online payments to bills. (safer too!). I encourage every postal worker I see that I support them.

In my rural area the postwoman who delivers our mail has worked for the USPS for 16 years. She has never gotten any benefits. Zip. Nada. Zilch.

Takes all a sham

The company I work for depends on them as well...we get great bulk mail rates from the USPS and our permit renewals are fairly inexpensive as well...our mailings arrive in a timely fashion and not damaged. Same goes for my personal mailings...I have no issues w/the USPS so I'm not sure why we *need* to privatize them.

It is class warfare.....but it is also financial terrorism against the United States.

And the oligarchs and their toady politicians are winning.
So far.

If things keep getting worse, I believe we will have political and social unrest.
An American spring might be coming.....and it won't be pretty.
