Right Wingers Wreak Havoc on Philadelphia Town Meeting

Philadelphia, PA -- August 2: This afternoon, at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, I saw the face of ignorance and hate--and it wasn't pretty.

When Health and Human Services Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius and Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA) came to the National Constitution Center to answer questions about health care reform, they were greeted by an overflow crowd of approximately 400 people, the majority of whom were supporters with legitimate questions.

Unfortunately, though, a well-organized, belligerent and loud group of right-wingers stood in the aisles and across the back and disrupted the town meeting throughout. They yelled, shouted and jeered, and it was clear that they were not there to participate, but instead to try to disrupt the meeting and make it difficult as possible for anyone else to ask questions. They jeered from the moment the director of the Constitution Center stood to welcome everyone. For a few days leading up to the town meeting, e-mails circulated around Philadelphia warning that the "tea-baggers" were planning to protest the meeting and, although there were fewer of them than there were supporters--they made more noise shouting about "socialism," "abortion," and "assisted suicide."

To show their support, the audience stood and applauded Secretary Sebelius and Senator Specter numerous times. There were people in the crowd wearing purple t-shirts with gold and white lettering that said "Health Care Now We Can't Wait."

Local members of Health Care for America, a non-partisan, nationwide coalition of volunteers were a strong presence at the event. According to Antoinette Kraus, a Pennsylvania Eastern Organizer for the Philadelphia Unemployment Project, one of Health Care for America's member organizations, "Two people a day die in Pennsylvania from illnesses that could have been prevented if they'd had access to affordable health care.

"We advocate for quality health care for all through a public option," she said, "and we encouraged all advocates of health care to come out today and support Sect. Sebelius and Senator Specter."

In spite of the chaos, questions were asked and answers given. In response to one question, Specter said, "I believe the single-payer system should be on the table," and was enthusiastically applauded. A retired nurse then prefaced her question by saying, "If single-payer passes, I'll come out of retirement!"

When asked why the Community Choice Act (which would cover patients who can be treated at home) wasn't included in the proposed plan, both Sebelius and Specter explained that they are an effort to put it in the final Senate bill.

When an angry woman approached the microphone and complained that health care reform would lead to "rationed care," Secretary Sebelius said emphatically, "Rationed care is absolutely not something we condone," and explained that today health care is "rationed everyday for people who do not have coverage."

To emotionally charged questions about abortion and assisted suicide, Sebelius calmly answered, "Abortion and assisted suicide are not a part of the legislation."

impassioned and frustrated man asked why--if sixty-three percent of the American people favor health care reform--can't sixty-three percent of the Congress pass the legislation. Specter replied, "We are going about it in a democratic way."

One person described seeing people "falling through the cracks everyday" and asked what can be done about "getting insurance for people with serious illnesses." Sebelius explained that the proposed health care reform would require "no more pre-existing barriers, no more being dropped by insurers when you're seriously ill, and no more losing coverage when you lose your job."

Frances Conwell, Philadelphia, was in the audience and supports health care reform and she explained, "People say they don't want to pay for other people, but I say they're going to pay anyway--they can choose to pay for prevention or for how much it costs us now when people have to go to the emergency room for care." She added, "I have health care, but I can't watch other people suffer just because I have coverage. You have to think outside yourself and think about other people."

Maureen Benzig, retired, who formerly worked at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, said, "I would like to see a single-payer system and I was happy to hear Senator Specter say he like it on the table, but I support a public option if we can't get single payer." Benzig described a family member who is a physician and took a year off in order to support single payer. Her own doctors, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania also support single payer.

When I asked one of the belligerents why he and his companions wouldn't stop shouting so others could speak and be heard, he shouted that it was his right to yell under "the first amendment." I then asked why he couldn't respect the first amendment rights of others and he answered by glaring at me and walking away.

After the question and answer segment ended, I asked three of the boisterous opponents of health care why they do not support it and one of them pulled a copy of the Constitution from his hand and waving it, said, "Health care is not covered in the Constitution." Their arguments were illogical and based on lack of knowledge and an abundance of fear. I commented to them that they were being had, that they were working against their own best interests and they kept waving the Constitution.

The fury and rancor in the faces of the right wingers at the town meeting made it clear that this was not about health care only. It is about fear and raw anger, already inside them, now directed toward the health care debate. They see defeating health care legislation as their opportunity to re-visit the Presidential election.

When the government issues the health care rules and then becomes a competitor, no company can survive. They will be undercut and regulated out of existence. The loser is the citizen because when health care decisions are final, you can't sue the government but you at least have the ability to use private.

But I thought "the government" can't do anything right, what with the DMV and the Medicare, and the VA and so on. But when it comes to health care, the government will be so good at controlling costs and offering timely value, that it will wipe out private insurers? Make up your mind.

I recently attended a town a hall forum in Philadelphia where I ran into Denise Dennis. I am an organizer for Health Care for America Now. I have been working with activists, non profits, unions etc to fight for this historic health care legislation. I have been quoted in numerous articles including an article here on HP titled Right Wingers Wreak Havoc at Philadelphia Town Hall. Yesterday I was contacted by a Fox news reporter out of NY who was putting together a panel discussion on health care activists at town hall meetings. She told me that she had repeatedly seen my name in articles on health care. She said she needed help finding a local resident who had been protesting at town hall meetings. She wanted someone who could be in NYC by 6:45 am the next morning. I did not qualify because I am a full time organizer. I quickly found her someone. In our follow up conversation she was thrilled and asked me if they worked for the Republican Party. I then told her no but they volunteered for Obama. In the next sentence I learned she wanted someone against health care reform. She was no longer interested. I do not know why she thought I was someone that could help her create a panel discussion about right wing activists. In every article including here in Huffington Post clearly I support health care reform. Fox at News at its finest.

The only time Fox News allows anyone from the left on a show is when they feel the need to belittle and degrade someone with snide remarks condecending looks. I can't imagine anyone going for that so I'm glad you clarified the situation with them. Keep up the good work.

Union thu.gs and Tort Lawyers are the biggest donors to Democrats, and they stand to benefit very much from this socialst universal hc scheme.

Want to lower medical calls, have tort reform, but the dems won't do that, they will alienate their biggest donors.

"Corporate Dupes in Action"
Why are these Right Wing anti Health Care mobsters not wearing brown shirts? That's exactly how these fascists are acting, a playbook straight out of the 1930's. And this latest batch of Pavlov's dopes seem to be eating this crap up hook line and sinker. Well I devoted my latest cartoon to these "Corporate Dupes" It's my latest Left of Center Political Cartoon, up at my website now, www.whatnowtoons.com.

I must say I am at a loss. The GOP has been using the DNCP playbook.

Where are these people coming from that the GOP are using. Too nicely dressed at least opposed to the americorp individuals used for their dirty work.

What is the absloute most surprising is where are the democrats that would be normally attending these events. They seem to have disappeared.

Some are saying the people attending these town hall meeting are well organized as well as well financed. So where are the democrats. Those infamous takersof the federal dollars. Where are they? Have they decided to take a break or have they seen the light. Is the light shining on more and more taxes.
02:12 PM on 08/06/2009
Using the DNCP playbook? I do not recall any organized effort by the Democratic Party to protest Republican town-hall meetings. This month's protests ARE well organized by conservative groups with the assistance of Republican congressional members posting town-hall meetings outside their district. As for nicely dressed, I don't recall anyone wearing a dress or suit and tie.

Oh yes there was. The Dems and unions went after the Republicans in town halls in 2005 over the SS issue.

Dems are just getting a look at what is coming in the future. The dems have awakened a sleeping giant.

Obama welcomes dissent, right. You people honestly believe that health insurance companies actually organized thousands of conservatives to go to these townhalls and act out anger. I feel so sorry for you.

They all weren't conservative but a lot were! The left thinks we staged these! These were honest citizens, Republicans, Democrats, Libertarian, and Independents wanting to know why they were voting for something they hadn't read and why was the congress was spending like drunken sailors! No pun the the military just a figure of speech!

Mostly, what we saw with the protesters, were a bunch of people yelling, sweaty-faced, as if they were on speed, many of whom either didn't read the bills either, but relied on a lot of what Fox News, etc. lied to them about what was in the bills, and many other people who did read at least parts of at least one bill, but still misinterpreted what they read. How do we know they misinterpreted? Because they were claiming little other than that the section of one bill, proposing that the government pay for living will consultations with one's doctor, was actually a "kill granny" clause (what happened to grandpa?). They also falsely claimed that the public option would wipe out private insurers. And they also falsely claimed that there were no provisions for funding the new programs, even though Obama and his administration have said how they plan to. You may disagree with their numbers, but it's not true that Obama's administration hasn't developed methods they say will pay for these programs.

Congress does not want it for themselves then why force it on the people of this Nation. If you are not a productive citizen you might as well kiss yourself goodbye. You are born with a medical problem you will not make it far. If you get MD or something later, sorry about your luck. And if the government thinks you are living to long time for counseling to see if you are fit to keep on living. This Health Care Reform is another way for big government to control. Do not be fooled, people with socialized healthcare come to America for treatment because they can not get it at home.

"people with socialized healthcare come to America for treatment because they can not get it at home."

They are also referred to as "Nobility".

I might also point out that people here also fly to other countries in order to recieve certain procedures, so whatever substance that exsists to reinforce your point is lost.

This health care ā€˜reform’ issue is a ticking time bomb. It amounts to a declaration of war on the American people. It will give this illegitimate government control over the lives of every America citizen. I wouldn’t trust a Founding Father with this much power. No way would I accept this damnable travesty from any current ā€˜leader’ - especially from someone who has demonstrated to America that he can’t be trusted with bailouts or appointing unaccountable ā€˜czars’ who undermine and destroy the Constitution. Make no mistake about it America, the day has come when domestic enemies are more dangerous than obvious foreign enemies. Ask a combat veteran what you must do when you can’t tell the difference between a friend and an enemy. They know. Good intentions get you killed. This health care abomination will destroy America. The stakes are too high to put our trust in those who hide behind false promises and words that are re-defined daily. America’s fate will be made manifest by utterly rejecting this rotting travesty, or by accepting it and welcoming slavery. Choose!
09:50 AM on 08/06/2009
Do you have any facts to support your contentions, or just rely on regurgitated talking points? Why is this an "illegitimate" government?
11:22 AM on 08/06/2009
Here's a fact for you Obama and his congress will not sign up for this socialst/universal care scheme. Why is that? Maybe because they already have the best health insurance plans, provided no less, by evil private insurance companies and paid for by the taxpayers.

90% of Americans have health insurance, over 80% are happy with it. Take out the regulation of the health industry imposed by the govt and let the companies compete, instead of limiting them per state. Make it like auto insurance, then premium costs will decrease, service will improve, etc...

If we really wanted to cover the so-called 40 million without insurance, put them on Congresses Plan and have the taxpayer foot the bill. They don't want that, they want total government control....part of the comm.unist mani.festo.

You mean more control than Bush wanted? He suspended the rule of law, remember.People were removed from tall hall meetings on social security if they were suspected of being against Bush's plan.Their license plates were checked and they were identified and removed from the meetings.Remember the brave soul,Harry was his name, who stood up and questioned Bush?He was booed at the meeting.
We have met the enemy and he is us.Those who appose democratic methods of debate and don't let their fellow Americans pose honest questions are thugs.WE had enough of thugs for the last 8 years.Let democracy have a chance now.
12:03 PM on 08/07/2009
You want to talk about suspending the rule of law, let's look at the great FDR when he rounded up Japanese-American citizens, put them in internment camps, and took everything they had. I think that is a bit worse than rounding up known enemy terrorists of America as enemy combatants, which is legal, mind you.
09:46 PM on 08/05/2009
These people's expenses for being bussed in to all of these town hall meetings are being organized and paid for by the Health Care Industry. Freedom of Speech does not mean you can start a riot.

Also, I heard someone say on the radio that since most of these people seem to be old people, they are beginning to hate old people.

Please don't do that! There are many of us old Liberals left and even though we have Medicare we want everyone to have Health Care. That is part of being a Democrat and a backer of Unions; we want everyone to have a chance at a job with enough pay for a decent living and healthcare for everyone.
People who say it will cause long waits for healthcare if many millions more are covered are selfish, and a good many of them are Republicans.

Hint: Many of these older people have not kept up with the news, plus they don't work and it is fun to have someone pay for a bus trip and you get to act like a child having a tantrum. If they listen to Rush Limbaugh 5 hours a day and Fox News for the rest of it, they are totally brainwashed. I have despaired and think they are incapable of change at this point. I know some of them and they are pitiful. They do not have the knowledge to vote their own pocketbook.

It,s always regretable when a small group insists on exercising their own rights by depriving others of theirs. In this case a group made up of fear based on ignorance the typical right wing attitude that says, "I got mine, screw everybody else". Anyone notice that it seems like most of those who speak out loudest aganst healthcare reform have great healthcare?

Ad hominem labeling of opponents of national health insurance as right-wingers does not advance the argument. There are many legitimate concerns about another monstrous government-run program. After all, didn't government oversee the securities-banking industry? That was a rousing success!

The bottom line is this: most bills passed by Congress are unconstitutional and motivated by what
I consider to be a flawed theory, that the central government must necessarily intervene in the economic affairs of a free people.

In 1913 an intervention took place that placed every American in the position of being a serf---the Federal Reserve Act which established a banking cartel that issued debt-based money through fractional-reserve lending. The corrupt money that flowed over the next 96 years has infected every layer of human interaction.

The serfdom presaged in 1913 is about to reach fruition. I fear we won't survive as a free nation, because a clueless public is being led by a clueless political class serving a very, very savvy and venal financial elite.

Doesn't look good...however, the angry crowd confronting Senator Specter actually gave me a glimmer of hope. The people have a lot of pent-up energy. Ms. Sibelius just couldn't believe her eyes that the masses weren't giving out enough respect to a member of the political elite! She was shocked that the crowd wasn't more demur (she ain't seen nothing yet, when the subsidies stop flowing and the phony money becomes worthless).

Since/if there are legitimate concerns about what's in the proposed bills, why do most of the loudmouths at these meetings want to talk about little else than bizarre conspiracy theories, such as the one that the proposal for the government to help fund living will consultations, is actually a clause to kill granny? It's because most of them don't really want to have a conversation. Most of these people simply oppose anything Obama tries to do, and want to hide under various excuses that are less than thinly veiled.

The protesters have earned their reputation, and every poll has shown that most of them are, indeed, "right-wing".
