McCain Will Crash and Burn Again with Palin

If voters weren't frightened of a trigger-happy, impulsive McCain before, then they sure had better be now.

McCain's choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his Vice President displays near-reckless judgment.

She's a small-town gal without credentials who will be one heartbeat away from the U.S. presidency. Just 20 months ago, according to her biography, she was mayor of a town of 8,000, in Alaska, then became Governor in 2006

McCain's choice is insulting to women, particularly since his spin-doctors, and Palin herself, are bidding to get some of the 18 million who voted for Hillary, an accomplished lawyer, former First Lady, second-term U.S. Senator and a political career that spans nearly 40 years.

Is McCain simply swapping pantsuits because he believes women are dispensable and merely arm pieces?

This choice is also insulting to people with depth and real experience such as Romney, Bloomberg, Lieberman and dozens more governors or Senators.

The choice, however, is vintage McCain -- beyond risky and, like the many planes McCain has crashed - headed for the ground.

In a world where governance is not about running PTAs or municipal councils, Palin's candidacy fails to meet the most basic requirements for this job:

1. Vice Presidents must assume the reins should the President become ill or deceased. This is a very real possibility, given McCain's age, cancer and other physical problems. How dare McCain put someone into the biggest most important job in the world who is mere months out of running a tiny village in an isolated part of the country?

2. Vice Presidents also chair the Senate. Successful ones are savvy and experienced operator at brokering deals and forging bipartisan coalitions. She not has no experience in this regard but has not met any of the Senators, except those from Alaska, McCain and a few others. Her selection insures Congressional gridlock and a lack of respect for the duties.

Maybe that's what is most telling about McCain regarding this bombshell announcement: He arrogantly thinks he will have no problem serving out his term and has failed to plan for proper succession; he does not differentiate between women of accomplishment and women in general and he clearly does not value experience, Congress, policymaking, statecraft or the aptitude required for true leadership and vision.

The pundits have been calling this a "gamble" on McCain's part. I don't want people GAMBLING with the executive office of our country, please. Go to Vegas for that!

Sarah Palin's resume apparently consists of a cover page. That's it.

"Crash and burn again". How nice of you. I sense a lot of Obama women are upset with this bold choice by McCain. Looks like he hit a nerve. What you should be worried about is that the Hillary Women turn their backs on the Democratic party for good.

This isn't "bold," it's irresponsible and insulting. He could have chosen any number of competent and experienced republican women. This pick shows his arrogance and real contempt for women, as well as his lack of understanding of what is required in the presidency and the need to ensure a highly competent successor. He's just off the deep end here.

Bold choice??? What have you been sniffing?
07:22 PM on 08/29/2008
This is unbelievably ridiculous. What the hell is John McCain thinking?
10:21 AM on 08/30/2008
That there are enough idiots in this country to pull it off.... what does he care if she can be president... he'll be dead by then.

I love how all of the criticism from the left about Palin is the same of Obama from the right except you swap the word "black" with "woman"!

Every time you criticize McCain's number 2, you make your own number 1 look bad.

And still all Palin needs to say is that she still has more executive experience than Obama and Biden combined!

Actually, when it comes to "executive" experience, Obama's experience running a national political campaign (and doing so impressively all around, as even his detractors have had to admit) far outweighs her 18 months as governor of a state with just over a half million people. And she has zero legislative and international experience (critical for the actual role of the VP). Sorry, this talking point won't stick. Only a truly unthinking fool would buy that.

no -the liberals just know after 8 years not to trust oi state governors with no national experience and family ties to the oil companies

I'm guessing McCain chose her for the obvious reason of getting any PUMA who really wants a woman (any woman will do) and to take the focus off him. His daily flubs will not get even the small amount of press they've been getting because there's something shinier and sparklier to focus on.

This will be a close election. Anyone that browses multiple news sources and doesn't just park on the Huffpost and Daily Kos knows this. Every vote, every demographic will count. I've been amused for these last few months with different columnists on the Huffpost claiming their little groups will make or break this election.
Palin was a great choice. She'll appeal to many people that are only have a lukewarm interest in McCain. Will she cost the party any votes that wouldn't have gone to Obama anyway? Doubtful.
Palin will bring votes to the Republican Party that Romney or Guiliani would not. Gun owners, hunters, sportsmen are an easy demographic for Republicans. The religious right is also a given. Palin has cemented these votes for the right. She will also bring women to McCain's side that would never have considered voting Republican. Will it be enough. We'll see. Just don't pretend that McCain/Palin will not pick up female voters (especially pissed off PUMA voters).

If she brings women to McCain's side who have never considered voting republican, it will only be because they are completely unthinking or woefully ignorant of where Sarah Palin actually stands on issues of real concern to women. I don't for a minute believe that the democrats and Obama campaign will fail to make an issue of this- she does not remotely resemble a feminist candidate, and women concerned for progress will not vote for her.

All I care about is what do Floridians, Ohioans, Virginians, and Coloradans think about this... Last time I checked, McCain already had Alaska and Idaho... I like to think that Floridians are smart enough to see through this. Even my own secretary, who has told me she is "not ready for a black man in office" when she learned who Palin is yesterday looked at me and said "I don't think I am voting this year." She is a conservative Republican who saw right through this and was disgusted. On the other hand, my crazy PUMA coworker (male) was praising the choice through the roof.
06:23 PM on 08/29/2008
I think this is a ploy; getting everyone hyped up about Palin's lack of experience and then going, "See, inexperience is an issue! By the way, here's my real VP pick."

You guys kill me with this bait and switch scenario that I see on these sites a lot. He cannot AFFORD to change his mind now, he has committed. If he changed to someone else it would look like he didn't know what he was doing. You can't do that with only two months to go. Put your mind in gear please!!

Absolutely right - or as Palin would say "Yup, Yup, Absolutely". In general, he doesn't know what he's doing but he cannot be seen to reinforce that reality.

You are absolutely correct. McCain has been telling voters for 18 months that the world is an evil place that we have multiple wars going on and that we need a real experienced leader that MUST have foreign policy experience. But, alas that was just a joke and he was clearly NOT serious about that because he is placing in the number two spot such an inexperienced candidate. I heard Bob Shrum on MSNBC this morning saying democrats have to be careful about going after Palin because of her total lack of experience. My goodness talk about ridiculous. It is so obvious it goes without saying - 8 years working in city government for a town of 8,000 people and a year and a half as governor of Alaska and she is now ready to lead the free world and stand up to Putin, Iran's President, the Taliban, and Osama bin Laden. This pick shows the greatest lack of judgment I have ever witnessed.

I say open the floodgates. I am giving $300 right now to Obama. I want ads in 50 states for this outrageous insult to the American people.

"Is McCain simply swapping pantsuits because he believes women are dispensable and merely arm pieces?" That's it exactly. A complete and total misunterstanding of what Hillary supporters really are. They're pro-choice Democrats who cannot be bought by petty pandering by John McCain. I think even some Republican's will be turned off by the choice and while they may not vote for Obama - they may just stay home.
05:23 PM on 08/29/2008
Hmm...does John McCain think women are dispensable and merely arm pieces? Hmmm....

Survey says: Obviously

McCain's choice represents offensive, cynical and transparent identity politics at its worst, and is indeed essentially saying to women, "you are interchangeable, and I'm betting that you'll vote based on vaginas because you aren't smart enough to vote on the issues". It's shameful:

http://www.thepersonalispolitical.com/2008/08/mccains-shocking-choice-for-vp-sarah.html

I wonder how/if Hillary will respond to this, both immediately and in the long term. I think her reaction will be invaluable.

If this does not flag the attention of even the low info voter, there is something seriously wrong with the people of this country. I am pretty sure this is an indication of a serious malfunction of the thought processes of Mc Same. In other words I am sure dementia has set in and has been there for some time.

Hey Lady, I'm a serious Democrat from Alaska, you haven't met nothing until you have encountered this wirrlwind, shes unstoppable Kate, Unsinkable Molly Brown, extremely skilled in any dabate, you are looking at Alaskas wonder women. She is Mrs. America, BRAINS first, beauty an after thought. All mothers example. We consider her beauty as a disadvantage in Ak.because her ability as a political genious, out shines everything. MC gets five stars for this one, and Obama needs to shutter.
06:14 PM on 08/29/2008
I don't think Obama is "shuttering" or shuddering, but you have been out on the tundra too long. I don't want this inexperienced beauty pageant runner-up a heartbeat away from the presidency. That makes me shudder, but I'll have to let you know whether or not I shutter.
