Die-Hard Hillary Supporters Play To Win At Democratic Convention

**Updated Below**

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Are die-hard Hillary Clinton supporters going to "make nice" and support Barack Obama, now that Clinton's name will be placed in nomination alongside the nominee-in-waiting?

"Alas, no," PUMA spokesman Will Bower told OffTheBus on Aug. 24. "We're here to see Hillary Clinton emerge as the party's nominee. Even if that doesn't happen, we still won't be voting for Obama in November."

Obama's lack of experience is his biggest weakness, according to 62 percent of Clinton delegates.

Although Democrats have planned for months to nominate Obama at the national convention this week, state delegations plan a traditional roll call for Clinton, his vanquished opponent. As a leader in the movement to nominate Clinton over Obama, Bower spent last week circulating a floor-nomination petition to ensure that the decision to put Clinton's name on the ballot doesn't simply fall into the hands of DNC chairman Howard Dean.

"We now have well over the required 300 delegate signatures in hand," says Sue Castner, a Clinton delegate from Portland, Ore. "We don't know if this has anything to do with the joint campaign announcements made last week and we'll probably never know. But it certainly makes us feel good."

"Signatures started pouring in during all the mainstream media attention PUMA received last week," says Bower, who told OffTheBus that signatories include a governor, several county democratic party chairs, members of the diplomatic corps, and a number of Obama delegates.

2008-08-25-delegatepin.pngCurrently their names are a mystery. But each delegate who signed the petition will be given a green lapel pin to wear at the convention. It features the number 300, skewered by a ball-point pen.

Clinton -- herself a superdelegate who gets a vote -- will likely release all her delegates to Obama. The senator will meet with her delegates at a reception in Denver on Wednesday afternoon -- before that evening's vote on the nominee, spokesman Philippe Reines said.

Because Clinton suspended her campaign instead of dropping out, she was able to keep the pledged delegates she earned in the primaries and caucuses. Obama needs these Clinton supporters in order to beat John McCain in November. Polls show Obama has won over most of the Clinton faithful, but not all. A small-but-vocal group doesn't like Obama. They think Clinton was treated unfairly during the primaries, and disrespectfully during Obama's V.P. search.

So what happens if the woman-of-the-hour orders her die-hard fans to support Obama?

"Hillary Clinton is/was/will be our preferred candidate," says Bower. "We are free-thinkers. We made this decision for ourselves. Nothing she says will change our minds."

---
**UPDATE: Emerging from a Women Count/Women Vote meeting with Hillary Clinton on Tuesday afternoon, Bower told OffTheBus that although Clinton will be releasing her delegates on Wednesday, she will "NOT be asking them to vote for Barack Obama. She will be advising them to vote their conscience." Many Hillary die-hards are still hoping Clinton will emerge as the nominee. "We only need a small number of Obama delegates to have buyer's remorse, and change their mind," Bower told OffTheBus.

It'd be one thing if these self-absorbed whiners were merely cutting off their own collective nose to spite their own collective face, but they're willing to put the country through at least four more years of GOP rule and destroy the Democratic Party.

Grow up. Use reason. Vote Obama.

PUMA is a self-serving group with a self-serving de facto leader...they need to get over it and realize their candidate of choice ran an over budget, off message, narcissistic campaign.
05:36 PM on 08/26/2008
Has it ever crossed your mind that these Clinton supporters are saving you from the least experienced candidate in U.S. history. Perhaps these supporters don't want to support a Democrat party that allowed caucus fraud and party selection-not election rule. Maybe these supporters actually want democracy in their party or else.

If Hillary runs for president again, I would think back on the people w/ this attitude who seem always to have been with her, remember that they chose to hurt the democratic party and the country, and say no, guess I'll support someone else. Hillary seems to attract too many people who just want to get attention for themselves.

Give me "inexperienced" and good judgement over a warmongerer any day! We've had many great presidents with less experience than Obama, and many disasterous presidents with decades of experience.

If you lack good judgement, experience is useless. After all, look where all of Dick Cheney's experience and bad judgement (and Bush's lack of EVERYTHING) has gotten us!

I am watching the complete uninterrupted Convention on CSPAN where there are no talking heads. I will be watching for those green button. I want to see who these people are and find out their real motive, I think it is based on race. Hillery is just being used as an excuse.

I hope that Bowers understands that with that type of divisive attitued, Hillery Clinton will never be president. He can rest assure that Obama's supporters will never forget when and If she runs again. They had better prey that Obama wins, If not Clinton will not be able to get through the first round of candidates in the primaries she will not be able to win with out Obama's supporters. This would surely backfire in eight years down the road.

He is not a very good spokesperson for her because he is truly obnoxious. He also blabbers the same lines in every interview.

McCain can have his vote, and probably always did.
05:12 AM on 08/26/2008
I'd still vote for her. She hasn't been totally gracious, but has, since suspending her campaign, thrown her support behind Obama. Having her as a VP would be a huge waste of her talent as a senator. I understand the PUMAs though. I'm working for a campaign that has been undermined by the DCCC's interference in our primary. We'll probally lose tommorrow and it will be very hard for me to vote for our opponent come this fall. I will, but I will be bitter doing it. I can't imagine what people who have gone through a presidential primary are feeling. Most of these people have gotten over the hurt. A few dozen just can't let go, but Clinton shouldn't be held accountable for their self-destructive behavior.

Russia and China are waiting and hoping for a McCain Presidency.
China owns the USA now economically and that will be strengthened and Russia is waiting to retake its old "colonies" because the US troops will be occupied in the Middle East and Afghanistan.USA also needs Russia's help with Iran. With McCain and the war nuts, USA continues its slide to a second world country.
09:29 AM on 08/26/2008
how will an obama presidency change what russia and china are planning to do? i think russia is on the move no matter who wins. and i hope you are not suggesting that obama would just engage russia in a world war after the troops are pulled from iraq.

Watching Convention coverage right now on MSNBC. The cameras are on the Clinton supporters. Those supporting Obama and those who are supporting Hillary and/or McCain. Yes, there are a bunch of McCain signs in the group of Hillary supporters.

Disgusting truly. Would the Republicans ever let someone in their convention with signs for Obama? Would the TV cameras focus on it?

Hillary's people said they would have 40 people there handing out HIllary signs - oh, and making sure her people didn't get too unruly.

Not surprising that yet another round of Clinton controversies threatens to torpedo the Democratic Party and Progressive ideals.

Hillary Can't order them to do anything, or rather, she can say whatever but they have no obligation to obey her. The only thing she *can* do is replace them with other people.

Olivia,

I agree she created this mess. I think what has surprised even her is she does not have control over her supporters. HRC forgot what win at all cost would create! While believe she trying to correct the sitiutation - it is too late. She let this genie out of the bottle by saying it is okay behave this way during the primaries!

hillary cannot replace duly elected delegates. they were chosen as a result of the votes in the primaries/caucuses.
03:09 PM on 08/25/2008
sad, adults, the media and the republican party are playing the dems against one another. The media loves the clintons because of the drama and ratings they bring and the republicans love to win.... Dem have held the office of President how many times in 20, 30 years????? If we let the republicans win with this candidate we deserve 30 more years of republican reign.
09:35 AM on 08/26/2008
in 30 years, only 2x when bill was president from 1992-2000. but there's a whole lot of dems on this site who love to use the republican playbook to call bill and hillary every name in the book, without justification. teddy kennedy took his candidacy to the convention floor in 1980 and refused even to stand on the podium with jimmy carter and raise his hand in the air after carter, a sitting president won overwhelmingly. bradley called gore a "liar." biden explicitly said that obama was not ready to lead the country. but all you can do is tear hillary and bill to shreds. if there's a split in the DEM party it's because of this.

What a sad abuse of our right to vote. Yes it's the American democratic process, but these supporters sure sound like sullen high schoolers whose best friend didn't get voted prom queen. To squander such a gift to be a part of a positive action (whatever your definition of postive might be) in order to "take their ball and go home" makes me realize what the voting process would be like if we ever lowered the voting age to five.

Women who support progressive causes will not vote for McCain. What is shocking is that McCain presumes that intelligent women can be so bitter about Clinton's loss of the primary that they are willing to vote against their own personal interests. Even if they aren't enthralled with Obama and feel cheated by the bizarre primary process, how can these women support a man who will overturn Roe v. Wade?, a man who has demonstrated his contempt for women through his coarse remarks even to his own wife? a man who promises to send their sons into more illegal wars? a man who has brought in Karl Rove the Cheney/Bush attack dog,, Ralph Reed the corrupt Christian Coalition leader and Phil Gramm of Texas/Enron fame to run his campaign?? Get real, recognize PUMA die-hard dead-enders and move on -only Republicans could stomach a vote for McCain/Bush. It is simply the worst possible formula for the advancement of women's causes.

I couldn't agree more. Are the women who were for Hillary but who will now vote for McCain so shallow? Will they seriously throw away Roe v. Wade, a stated objective of John McCain's because they are angry about Hillary's loss of the nomination? I cannot fathom this line of thinking. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. Only in this case it would be spiting everyone's face. They are selfishly thinking of their own hurt emotions and not thinking of younger women, daughters and granddaughters all across the country, who, in the time of need with an unwanted pregnancy, won't be caring about whether it was Obama or Hillary, but that it was John McCain and rightwing religious agenda which took their rights away!

They'll have these PUMA people to thank for that. Also for pay inequity, pharmacists who won't fill birth control prescriptions; the list goes on!

I wouldn't worry about these people they are Republicans that were just recruited by the Rush Limbaugh and MCCain campaigh to rain on our parade, don't let them. They never intended on voting for Obama anyway. Watch CSPAN and avoid the politics of the talking heads. It is much more enjoyable.

Why would Dem leadership give an inch to a group called "Party Unity My Ass?" Does that sound like a group that has anything positive on it's agenda?

If you want to read something interesting, in case you missed it here on Huffingtonpost, check out Jason Linkins' article, "Pumas, Veeps, And Hissing Cockroaches: A Political Bestiary On Crappy Hour". http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/22/pumas-veeps-and-hissing-c_n_120627.html

It's kind of creepy in a funny way. But Hillary ought to be a little worried if she is protective of her political reputation. From the pictures, the PUMA founder is obviously in love with the theatrical.
