With just hours to go before the presidential election, Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver appears in a YouTube video in which he calls Barack Obama the "most pro-abortion politician to run for the presidency in 35 years, since Roe v. Wade. He has committed himself to do things the Catholic Church would resist."
In the video uploaded on Nov. 2, Chaput is being interviewed by Thomas N. Peters at the Catholic Information Center in Washington, D.C. Yesterday Peters, who runs blog.AmericanPapist.com, told OffTheBus he uploaded the Oct. 29 interview on YouTube because "it is my hope that many people will have a chance to see this interview before they vote on Tuesday." His conversation with the Denver archbishop about Catholic voting and faithful citizenship also appears on the American Papist website.
During the interview, Peters asked Chaput to address a statement made by "a vocal minority of Catholics" who claim that the Democratic presidential candidate is in fact "the pro-life candidate."
"They're claiming that the social policies of Senator Obama would create economic conditions that would make it easier for poor women to carry a child to birth and not have an abortion," said Chaput. "I hope this happens, whoever becomes president. We should be doing this anyway. But it would be foolish to say that someone who endorses abortion as an option, and who runs on a party platform that has no regret at all about abortion ... to call that position 'pro-life' is really strange."
Chaput, a vocal public defender of the unborn, is also the author of the NYT bestseller Render Under Caesar. The archbishop is a registered independent who "disagrees with both parties" on some issues.

Chaput's thoughts on Obama begin at about 2:06.

I'm a Catholic voting for Obama.
Where was his outrage when the priests were molesting small children?
Agreed! Or his outrage at the slaughter of children in Iraq?
And here's another problem I have with this subject!
They want all of these unwanted children to be born, but will they step up and adopt them? My guess is no. In addition, they don't want to pay taxes that support socialist programs.
The foster care system is one of the sorriest programs there is today! Here in Colorado, it costs way more to raise a child than they give you as reimbursement. They are so pious and sanctimonious and holier-than-thou but they will never step up to help people who need help!
I'm so sick and tired of their saying one thing and doing another!!! IF THEY CARE SO MUCH FOR THE CHILDREN, WHY DID THEY TURN THE OTHER WAY AND EVEN TRY TO HIDE THE FACT THAT CHILDREN HAD BEEN ABUSED BY THEIR PRIESTS! Instead, they moved them to another parrish so they could do it again to another child!
NO ONE LISTENS TO HYPOCRITS any more!!! ENOUGH ENOUGH ENOUGH!
Wow. They are REALLY NOT supposed to talk about the candidates by name as official representatives of the church. It's that little separation of church & state tax exemption thingy. They usually get around it by only talking about the "issues" (read abortion) and not naming names, but their point is obvious enough. It drives me crazy that they can even get away with that. But this is a step too far. And before anyone says that he's speaking as an individual with first amendment rights and not for the church - I have to say that to an average observer that collar indicates that he is speaking for the church.
No matter - my whole family & a lot of my friends are Catholic. They're all voting for Obama. That's the good side effect of the birth control ban - we're all used to ignoring the church by now.
HuffPost's Pick
I am a lifelong Catholic and I get a little weary hearing about this issue. It would be wonderful if there was no abortion, but when it was illegal, dozens of women died every year having botched abortions.
The church needs to stay out of this in the political arena. How much better off would this country be had the church not directed it's membership (along with evangelical ministers) to vote against much more capable candidates, based on this issue alone. Bush would never have been elected in the first place.
How many lives worldwide would have been saved if there were no Iraq war, if we had better, more accessible health care, if we had a more enlightened approach to stem cell research, if global warming were addressed, if we had done a better job during Katrina, or repaired our infrastructure so that people don't die when bridges fall, if we hadn't tortured, if we closed gitmo, if the criminal justice system were more equitable, if we had responded more effectively to global atrocities in places like the Sudan, the list goes on and on.
The church needs to return its focus to life from the cradle to the grave and stop its myopic obsession with abortion. No body likes abortion, but abortions were performed when it was illegal. It will never be completely eliminated, so why not make it safe & rare? And move on to other issues that threaten the lives of everybody else--the already "born".
You truly nailed it. Thanks.
Obama cares about the poor and middle class....
therefore Jesus wants you to vote for Obama....
But mccain and Palin are liars and when called on the lies stand by them...so how do you know they aren't lying on your issues cathliocs? Where do you draw the line between the lies and truth with these two?
In my blog I forgot to state that I am against abortion.. We have more issues then abortion to look at during any election. Politics and religion DO NOT MIX!!!!!!!
Here's my problem! They had 6 years when they had the presidency and the majority in the house and senate -- and yet they did noting to even try to turn abortion around! Don't these sheep realize that they will NEVER TURN ABORTION AROUND?
The other issue I have with this is that they say they are pro-life, yet they have no problem with the death penalty or letting people die after Katrina! They have no problem with the poor families who cannot feed their children or have decent health care for them?
My mother is retired and lives completely on Social Security. She pays out over $300 for her medicare, yet by the end of the year, we have to scrape enough $$$$ together to buy her stroke medication! HOW IS THAT OKAY FOR THESE SO-CALLED CHRISTIANS?
I'm sick and tired of one issue voters -- especially when the republicans have no intention of ever overturning Roe v Wade!!!
Well, since I am a Catholic (I go to church every Sunday) I guess I am going to vote for McC.... ahem...McC a.....ahem ....Pal... .
OK, as a caring Catholic I have prayed to God to show me the light. To make sure my vote is for the greater good. God has not responded yet except that I'm donating money to Obama and I'm heading from NYC to PA tomorrow to volunteer for Obama (in 42 years I have never done anything like this). As a Christian I believe that God is guiding me in this direction so sorry Archbishop Charles Chaput but this Catholic is voting for OBAMA!
For those people who use the Reverend Wright scenario and talk about how bad Obama is because he didn't "get up and walk out," talk to your Catholic friends. Many believe in most of the Church's teachings, and there are many of them that have stayed in the Church even in her darkest hours with the sex abuse scandals because of a higher belief. For the last two weeks, across Catholic churches across the country, millions of Catholics received homilies about pro-life and how they should vote in the election. Not one of them, at least in my cathedral, got up and left, but I can tell you that many of them disagree with the premise that you have to vote Republican if you are a good Catholic. When there are good works being done across the board, you may have disagreements with your church or its pastors, but often the greater good prevails and you don't abandon it lock-stock -and-barre l.
Read this and you see why a lot of Catholics are now leaving the Church.. They talk about abortion but try and hide pedifile priests or move them around to other parishes.. . An "unwarrented war" in Iraq where 4100+ American troops have died is OK???? In the 2004 Presidential election the Church came out with pamphlets stating that it was a mortal sin if you voted for someone who is for abortion (John Kerry)... I now am a non-practicing Catolic because of the political views put out by the Catholic Church and promoted within the church like the Archbishop of Denver... What a hypocrit!! !!!!!!!!!! !!!
This man has no business getting publicly involved in politics. NONE! By the way I read no comments on Palin being excommunicated from the Catholic Church. I wonder why?
Women under duress will choose, no matter whether abortion is illegal.
In the old days before Roe v Wade (I remember) many women died.
I can see the headlines if Roe is overturned and women begin to suffer and die . . . . they will go something like: "Woman found dead in motel room," or "Woman wrapped in blood-soaked sheets arrives at emergency room," or "Public outcry over women's deaths from illegal abortions" . . . .
Where did the term pro-abortion come from?? No one is pro-abortion.
So, If you don't agree with the church you should turn away from God? or agree and be saved?
Separation of church and state is very important.
