Shame on You, Magic Johnson

Posted: 07/10/2012 8:10 pm

About a month ago I wrote a piece titled, "Negro, Open a Damn Checking Account." The article was an effort to implore black folks, who are wasting hundreds of dollars of their hard-earned money on prepaid checking cards, check cashing establishments and other so-called "alternative banking," to stop flushing their money down the toilet and smarten up to get a checking account. Today, I realize there's another problem: the celebrities and tastemakers in black popular culture who would rather make a quick buck manipulating our people's ignorance than try to help. The latest profiteer is a man I've come to expect better from, Magic Johnson.

For years, Magic has championed himself as an advocate of the black community who used his business savvy to help bring low-income, predominantly black neighborhoods some of the same goods and services that were in white neighborhoods. Magic has long presented his image as that of someone giving back to our community, but with the release of his "Magic Prepaid Mastercard," he's doing just the opposite.

Too many of our young black men and women are under the false impression that checking accounts have high minimum balances, that their credit score or previous chexsystems or telechex scores will prevent them from ever having a checking or savings account or that they will be barred from opening a bank account for some other reason. They think that they have no choice but to pay the exorbitant and oppressive fees charged by prepaid cards and "alternative banking." All of those things are patently false.

First, most banks do not have high account minimums. Many of the large chains have no minimum and almost all small banks have very low minimums or none at all for their basic checking and savings. For people afraid of their chexsystems or telechex scores, etc., there are things called Second Chance Checking accounts that specifically target those who have made mistakes in the past. These accounts are rarely free and rarely offer all the benefits of a traditional account, but they graduate after a probationary period to being free accounts with all the customary rights and privileges.

Even before second chance accounts become free, they're still less expensive and, unlike the "Magic Card," the "Rush Card" and other so-called alternatives, they help rebuild your credit. Second chance checking accounts also promote savings and good money management, unlike the "alternatives." Best of all, a checking account will perform all the same services that pre-paid cards charge you for, for free.

How can Magic Johnson on one hand claim that he's trying to help our people and on the other turn around and gouge us with the same fees and disgraceful tactics that these multi-national corporations have used for years to rape and pillage our community? It's truly inexcusable.

I expected better than this from a man I respect and a man who knows better. Magic Johnson is someone who truly has the ear of people in the black community and someone who has the power to help get our people financially literate and financially empowered. Instead he's taken the robber baron's route and decided to bilk those who don't know any better out of their hard earned dollars, fee after unnecessary fee.

Shame on you, Magic.

Magic Johnson is a businessman period. It sounds good to say you want to help the community but that's not his bottom line. His bottom line is profit and revenue. The community needs to know they have options when in Chexsystems. Prepaid cards will never help the community save money or build wealth. A better option would be second chance banks or no-chexsystems banks - http://rebuildcreditscores.com/no_chexsystems_banks

Unfortunately there are some banks that will not allow you to open a checking account if you have had bad credit they do a credit check prior to you opening an account. Also, there are some people who cannot afford to keep the minimum of the required $1500.00 as their account balance. So there is nothing wrong with this if it allows people to afford the same benefits as those who can afford to have a checking account.

there are plenty of banks who will give you a checking account with bad credit, and the minimum balance is usually 50. not having one bank account is also bad for your credit (having too many is also bad)

I am so tired of black people putting a magnifying glass on blacks that’s trying to give blacks alternatives. Did you tell that to the white man that have been taken advantage of blacks for centuries. Did you tell them shame on them? We sometimes as blacks concern ourselves what the wrong things.

Two things I like to see before 2012 closes are Black Man/Woman Working credit union and a financial literacy site blown up with hits by young black people. It's way past time we put our collective buying power to good use within and for the community' ;)

Doesn't Magic also have an ad for Rent a Furniture? Which is another one of the biggest ripoffs going.

Haven't heard about him being part of "Rent a Furniture", but the MJ movie theaters and Starbucks cafes are going strong in Michigan. You're right about the "ripoffs" style in those rental businesses. Customer are gettin' played financially.

I have to admit I'm shocked that Magic has jumped on this wagon that rips people off keep low in ome people into scam type financial institutions. I've tried to warn co-workers not to get involved in these type of predatory financial joints. Say it ain't so Magic.

Dion, I don't know what state you live in, but in NYS unless you have a certain balance, or direct deposit, you will have to pay a monthly fee to maintain a checking account. As for Magic, you can't be mad at him without looking at yourself first, as Magic has sucked money out of the black community for decades. Let's look at his backing of RAC (Rent A Center). If someone rents a living-room set at $89.00 per month, by the end of a year, the consumer has paid $ 1068.00. You can live without a living room set, so why not save your money and purchase a nice little set for 999.00 Businesses like RAC takes advantage of consumers who are not illegilbe for credit. Yet because of Magic Johnson, low income folks utilize RAC, while trusting Magic's word. When Magic Johnson Theater opened up in Harlem, it was the most expensive theater in NYC. We will not even discuss his Starbucks. So if it took you this long to take a deeper look at "who Magic really is", then you were asleep for a minute

No personal responsibility huh? No need to just GO TO A BANK and ask. The excuse is, "they think" there are issues with getting bank accounts? When will we stop excusing ignorance and start demanding responsibility?

I would think if someone avoids opening a checking account, one reason is they are afraid to have their bank account garnished for various reasons. I know many folks who have had their bank accounts wiped out by child support garnishments, credit collections, taxes owed.

I know a lot of people who just don't trust banks. Really, you never hear anything positive about them, just complaints about fees and unscrupulous bankers.

Yeah, but if you don't like banks for that reason, you can always try a credit union.

If there is show on TV and you dont want to watch it, turn the channel. Likewise, if one doesnt like the products that Magic, Russell, and Kimora are putting out, dont get them!! Even though they are black, they are also business people and what do business people do? Look for ways to make money. Next, there will be someone to tell puffy not to make and market ciroc b/c alcoholism is high amongst blacks.

I must retract my previous comments if they were even posted, because I too believed because of my credit issues, it would prevent me from opening a checking account. It could possibly be the banks way of placing fear in people, because I was actually told by a creditor that I would have an issue opening an account. So I don't know if it's him or the banks pushing him, or maybe both! No idea!!
07:17 AM on 07/12/2012
I don't see an issue here, because many especially in the black community cannot get checking accounts. Manly for credit issues.
So even though this is a easy way to waste cash to some it's the only way to pay bills, and purchases which require credit cards.
04:44 PM on 07/13/2012
You don't need credit to get a checking account. You need ID and a social security number.
09:03 PM on 07/13/2012
I get that but still the banks have a tendency to scare people into believing that if you don't have good credit, or if your have backed debits, you can't get a checking account.
