Forever 21 Tells Girls That Math Is Hard

Posted: 09/13/2011 6:48 pm

Just in time for back-to-school shopping, Forever 21 has issued this "Allergic to Algebra" tee! It's the new "Math Class Is Tough" Barbie, only 20 years later! (Progress? What progress?)

But oh the mixed messages Forever 21 is putting out with their "Graphic Tees." Here are a few of their other offerings:

"Allergic to Algebra" + Yale/Harvard? Does not compute.

Hard to believe this shirt was put out by a Korean-American-owned and -operated company. Factor in the company's long history of dodgy business dealings, and it may be time to revoke the Chang family's Asian card.

UPDATE: The "Allergic to Algebra" t-shirt has been removed from Forever 21's site since Gawker posted about it a day ago. No word if it's been removed from stores yet, where it was first spotted by a Reddit user.

Algebra is one of the easier maths, and while it may be bad for them to have a shirt like that. Isn't it worse that the article is saying that Koreans shouldn't be putting out a shirt like this, because they're Asian?

Isn't this super racist? Because they're Korean they shouldn't be doing this? Also who cares if u wear a shirt saying u can't do math? That's usually got more to do with ur brain than ur clothes.

Freedom of speech. Don't like the shirt? Don't buy it.

And what exactly does their being Korean have anything to do with it?

I had a shirt that said "I'm with Stupid" but the arrow pointed up. It was a pretty big hit!

This is seriously stupid. Why stop selling them? What is the big deal? It is a t-shirt for Christs sake.

If algebra gives you problems,.... well, you've got a REALLY big problem, because life is MUCH more complicated. And how is it possible for a Korean to be allergic to algebra? Don't they eat/drink math/science?

Why don't we dumb down the whole country and surrender to the world. This is not funny, it is pathetic that people in this country think it's funny we are rapidly becoming last in academic skills compared to other countries. Most people do not know how much air to put in the tires on their car. If you said the number on the door placard you are "WRONG" as that does not know what tires you have, how much weight you carrying, and the balance of the car. It has a purpose but if you use those numbers your front tires will be under inflated in most cases.

Oh this is so pathetic....I guess we should ban all the other tee shirts that have statements on them such as "willing to trade sister for video games" (promotes importance of video games over family), "I do my own stunts" (promotes daredevil acts) "Just like daddy" (promotes no individualism)...I can go on and on....We should also get rid of boys shirts that say "Allergic to homework"...It's a shirt for crying out loud...it's not giving girls a bad message...If for somehow girls get a bad message then they have other issues going on in their lives....I enjoy reading tee shirts like this, because they are humorous. If boys can wear clothes with sayings above, then girls should be allowed to. If you don't want your daughter wearing it....don't buy it....let kids be kids

What's wrong with the shirt? It's for older girls who know they don't like algebra. It's not for everyone and thats a true fact. I love algebra, but contrary to the yale and harvard shirts, I would never apply to those schools. It's just not for me, just like algebra is not for everyone.People need to get their undies out of a bunch.

Seriously? A big uproar over a SHIRT? How quickly we forget what is truly important in this world. Math IS hard. If people truly make this big of a deal over a shirt, which takes time and energy, it keeps us from the more worthy issues to take a stand on. Poverty, homelessness, health insurance, sweat shop labor-all way more pressing than the content of a shirt which we have the freedom to buy, or comment even louder by leaving it on the rack.

Exactly it is just a shirt. People think it is the end of the world.
