A Minor Diversion: Scenes From Kerala, India (PHOTOS)

Posted: 02/10/2012 7:00 am

When I was a child, my parents sent me to India every summer to spend time with family and learn about my motherland. These trips took me to several Indian states and I discovered a lot about this complex nation. Still, it wasn't until I married into a Kerala family that I learned about Kerala. Now, the more time I spend here, the more I want to stay.

I admit to originally thinking that the Kerala Tourism Board's motto of "God's Own Country" was highly presumptuous. However, as I became familiar with Kerala, I realized that it is a place all its own. I have yet to experience a place as diverse and enchanting. I am a cynic no longer. In Kerala, life is lived in the open, the landscape is breathtaking at every turn, and there is always a curious face.

We stopped the car on the drive to Allepuzha to watch the morning unfold along this backwater stream. This solitary fisherman elegantly maneuvered his boat through the waters, hauling in little river fish with his net.
