The official US national debt now stands at USD 12.7 trillion -- an amount equal to 89 percent of US GDP at USD 14.2 trillion.
put into perspective:The day after I signed for my home my personal debt equaled 250% of my domestic income, did I really mortgage my children's future? that is how it works. The deficit spending we see now is a down payment on the prosperity to come and conversely for government to reel in spending abruptly in my opinion would be disaster short and long term.
