Ms. Henry:

When I first learned you would become SEIU's new President, I was filled with hope that you would change SEIU for the better. I am relieved that you have just last week signed an agreement to cease hostilities against Unite Here, putting an end to a mistaken campaign of aggression that put SEIU at odds with the rest of organized labor. You have said that reunifying our movement is one of your goals.

I believe that unity in the labor movement means putting our shared principles above our individual differences. And one of the most fundamental principles we share is that every worker should have the right to organize--to talk with her co-workers about the issues they share, to advocate for collective solutions, and to make the decision to join a union without threats or intimidation.

Yet, over the past month, I have personally witnessed a coordinated effort by SEIU leaders in California to deny thousands of healthcare workers their federally-protected right to organize with the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW).

Thousands of Kaiser Permanente workers filed a petition with the labor board in June, asking for a fair, government-supervised election so they could end their membership in SEIU and join a union they feel better represents them. They petitioned to join NUHW because they want to take back control of their union after a hostile takeover by your predecessor.

I know that you and I do not agree on the issue of whether Kaiser workers should choose NUHW or SEIU. But I hope we can agree that they have the right to make a free choice in a fair election, and that they have the right to fully participate in that collective decision by talking openly with their co-workers.

I recently visited four Kaiser medical centers in Northern and Southern California, in order to meet with healthcare workers and lend my support. In every facility, I witnessed identical conduct by SEIU staff. Workers met in the cafeteria--a public space in the hospital where their right to talk about the union is protected by federal law. Every time workers met to talk about NUHW, SEIU staff surrounded them and began chanting and yelling insults, refusing to let workers talk, and being so disruptive that Kaiser security (sometimes the local police) had to shut down the entire cafeteria. (Video)

Each time workers were ordered out of a cafeteria, your staff cheered. These disruptions are clearly a planned tactic to stop workers from organizing their union by denying them the right to talk with their co-workers in the one public space in the hospital. An SEIU planning memo actually instructs staff and members to "Create WWIII"--in California hospitals--in order to drive out NUHW supporters.

This is no surprise; in previous election campaigns the National Labor Relations Board has filed charges against SEIU organizers for intimidation and harassment of NUHW supporters. Three courts have upheld a restraining order against an SEIU staff member who made death threats against a Kaiser social worker while trying to prevent her from talking with me.

Tactics that are intended not to persuade or inform, but to intimidate and deny workers' right to free speech in public space, have no place in any union election campaign. They are deplorable, and violate the most fundamental principles of our movement.

As a co-founder of the United Farm Workers, I have seen how destructive bullying and intimidation can be when it comes from another union. The violence against farm workers by the Teamsters in the 1970s was a sad chapter in labor history. Our movement cannot be united as long as any union is willing to use these tactics against another.

Today, it is your staff and appointed local leaders who are responsible.

Will you use your authority as President of SEIU to put a stop to these tactics?

In Unity,

Dolores Huerta

i am so tired of both the nuhw and the seiu fighting each other. and all of this drama is being shoved in my face by both sides. i never wanted to join a union in the first place, but kaiser required me to join if i wanted to work there. as far as i'm concerned, both of these groups are just fighting over who is going to collect the money that was taken from me against my wishes. california seriously needs right-to-work laws. both of these unions are corrupt, and i hate that i have to be a member of either of them.

It's a free country, you can always quit. Oh but I forgot those union wages & benefits are quite attractive , huh.

you union goons are so brainwashed that you don't even realize what you're saying... so, you're telling me, either i'm forced to be in this union, or quit my job? and you don't see anything wrong with that? you just proved my point. it's a free country, i shouldn't be forced to join a union.

i would have left this job a long time ago if the job market in california wasn't as bad as it is. and attractive union wages? don't make me laugh. non-union workers doing my job in other companies make at least double my income. greedy union won't allow our position to go non-union because they want our union dues.

Perhaps Dolores Huerta should come and see what NUHW people does on daily basis to intimidate people. Just today, some NUHW people were shouting in front of patients in Kaiser Walnut Creek. I was proud of my Union members for keeping their cool. In fact, she should educate herself and find out who she is defending. Sal Roselli is well known for doing backroom deals . I was there when he was in power and many of us including shopwtewards who joined NUHW were very unhappy. Our Union was an entity who only took our money . I only have to thank NUHW for the fact that myself and many of our wo-workers are educated about our union, we ARE holding them accountable. How does he expect us to vote for a union that's in the hole by millions and was found guilty of wrongdoing by a federal jury? I don't want to take that chance with people like that.
As Latino woman, I am sadden and ashamed by the fact that Dolores Huerta doesn't care about that. Has she been promised a position? SHe seems to be out of touch with the issues affecting all of us. IT takes away from her credibility.
I am not a shopstewart, I don't hold any Union position and not interested, I HAVE decided to keep myself and my co-workers informed so what happened while Sal and his people were in power, doesn't happen again.

How sad what these workers have to go through to get rid of poor union representation. And through it all they have to keep paying DUES, correct? Even while two unions spend all their time and resources fighting over turf instead of actually representing the members.

I'm sure the point here was to create enough disruption to have the cafeteria closed down because an uninformed union member is a good union member.

That's why Right to Work makes sense. What could possibly be wrong with workers deciding for themselves if they believe the union in their worksite is worth the price of the dues? Clearly, unions don't TRUST WORKERS enough or RESPECT WORKERS enough to give them the freedom to voluntarily support a union. Union leaders are nothing but extortionists no different than the mob bosses they learned their techniques from.

Are you talking about those contracts that the former leader's negotiated, I know you are not talking about those giveaways that Dave and the gang did. In case you forgot the pensions cash out from Kaiser and please don't forget the layoffs after Kaiser made over $ 2billion in 09. And plus now they want to keep them in trusteeship past the 18 months. Got a problem with elected leaders or what. The only people Dave and the gang lift out of poverty are themselves and the lawyers, with dues money I might add.
10:19 PM on 08/05/2010
You NUHU's aren't convincing anybody of your rhetoric but yourselves. We all know there have been no layoffs and the pension changes were required by federal law. SEIU negotiated a great Kaiser contract that raised wages and protected benefits. NUHW has not negotiated a single contract in its 18 months of existence.

The point that is missing in all the union haters comments is the fact that a respected union leader is speaker out on thuggish behavior by another union.I would also add that most of the corruption in unions are reported by union members. When corruption is reported the haters come out in force and yell told you so, just to win an augument against union. Union members are working people , we are just organized . Corporations are organized and work together in order to maximize their profits, what is wrong with working people doing the same. The American people would be better served if the so called good companies called out the bad companies when they see them ripping off consumers and workers.Profits are up in America and the workforce is being cut to the bone in order to make even more profits. Corporations are sitting on $1.84 trillion and not hiring. Watch the year end bonus's.And to top that off the Replublicans are still trying to find a way to keep the disastrous tax cut that got us in trouble in the first place. If corp. used the tax cut's to hire as they said they would we would be better off, instead they went to Hawaii or some other beautiful place. I am a proud union member who have a pension and affordable benefit's for myself and my family So don't hate the player, hate the game. And quit your "Stinking Thinking". Peace

My grandfather was one of the members of the machinest union members at Brown and Sharpe company in Rhode Island He was one of those who helped get the union into B&S He started working there in 1917. He as a life long Democrat and a devout Union Member he and I were tallking one day in 1975 he was 79 at the time that the Unions always pushed that coloreds were trying to steal all the white jobs and he said that the Unions of this country woulld sell this country right down the toilet. He said he couldn't understand why the Unions were using collective bargening to force prices of everything in our country to go through the roof.

"Bullying and Intimidation", YES it's a union tactic that is harmful to Union on Union hating, And Industry.

Can we think of some industry success stories and Union involvement? I can think of a few where the Union and its regressive tactics of Less productivity for More Cost have turned business offshore.
It's unsustainable.
