A Worried Mother Does Better Research Than the FBI

These are things that get to our children -- no matter where they are, whom they are with, and what they are doing. So I started doing research. And I was dumbfounded to find out what is legal.

That's because we're motivated not just by fear, but by love.

When my kids were teens, I thought I only had to worry about where they were, whom they were with, and what they were doing.

It never occurred to me that I had to worry about:

  • Toxic Air Pollution

  • Toxic Chemicals in Our Stuff
  • Food Contamination
  • These are things that get to our children -- no matter where they are, whom they are with, and what they are doing.

So I started doing research. And I was dumbfounded to find out what is legal.

Let's start with mercury. I knew that our tuna and swordfish and other big fish were contaminated. After all, my OB/GYN told me -- way back in the '80s! -- not to eat tuna when I was pregnant.

I didn't know the contamination of our fish came from air pollution. It is counterintuitive. Fish don't breathe air. But mercury from air pollution rains into the water, converts into methylmercury, and moves up the food chain.

When we eat mercury, it deposits in the fatty tissues of our bodies. For moms and adolescent girls, that includes... breasts. For babies? Fetuses? The only fat they have is... their brains.

It is legal to spew toxic mercury and other poisons into the air.

It is legal to spew greenhouse gas pollution into the air and cause global warming. We're spewing carbon, methane, other gases at levels way beyond what the atmosphere can handle normally -- and they are covering our planet like a heavy blanket. That's why we're breaking heat waves at a record level.

It is legal to put known carcinogens and endocrine disruptors into the products we touch every single day. We still haven't reformed the chemical bill on this one.

This makes me a very worried mother.

So we're the NEW FBI...FIGHT BACK INTENSELY. Make the SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN A PRIORITY. Fight for clean air.
