Change Is Here. Climate Change.

DEAR Barack Obama and Mitt Romney--if I may be so familiar, as you are with me in your fund-raising emails.

You are campaigning for our nation's highest office in a year of record-breaking heat waves, droughts, floods, and monster storms. More than half the contiguous U.S. is under drought conditions. In June wildfires destroyed 1.3 million acres across the country. More than 40,000 daily heat records were broken-by July.

Climate scientists tell us that the signals are loud and clear: We are experiencing global warming-NOW. Our climate is changing, more and more rapidly--because of greenhouse gas pollution. We have compromised the thin crust of atmosphere that protects our lives on this planet.

The weather is sending us a clear message: Danger. Danger. Danger.

Sirs: What is your message?

American families are looking to you for leadership on climate change--before it becomes catastrophic climate chaos.

I'm a mom, and like all parents, I want to do everything I can to keep my children out of harm's way. I assume you feel the same way about your beloved children. What is your plan to talk to Americans about the urgency of climate change, not only for us, but for the world our children--and your children--will inherit?

What is your plan to lead the country into a new era of energy efficiency? What is your plan to cut the carbon and methane pollution that is contributing so heavily to the atmospheric "blanket" that is trapping heat?

Whether we are Republicans or Democrats or Independents-waiting for more information about our candidates to decide how we vote--we are all in this together. Please, talk to us about global warming.

Give us more than hope. Give us a plan of action.

Change is here. Climate change.

Give us a plan to end greenhouse gas pollution. NOW.

Thank you.

Everyone should see http://www.heatisonline.org. This site has been tracking paid deniers and petroleum supported quack 'scientists' since the late 1990's.

He has all the info, bad guys, good guys and complete weather records.
Warning though- it's a sobering trip.
And I still say get your a$$e$ out there and support the energy innovators- at the very least.

You won't get a plan out of these guys. If you care about climate change your only choice is to vote for Jill Stein, Green party.

Ok, Romney's plan is to shut down all investment in clean energy and increase fossil fuel production. Obama's plan is the let the Republicans shut down all investment in clean energy and increase fossil fuel production.

Neither one of those will help the climate.

Great article! I wanted to share a website I have developed, www.50yearforecast.org, which would allow anyone in the U.S. to easily find their local TV meteorologists contact information and encourage them to speak openly of the connection between climate change and extreme weather.

I simply think if TV meteorologists are uniquely positioned to impact the way Americans understand climate change. While even the most environmentally-friendly citizens might struggle to name a climatologist, almost everyone has a meteorologist whom they know and trust. If meteorologists were to start speaking directly about the local consequences of climate change their viewers would take notice and it would help cut through the unnecessary controversy that currently surrounds climate change.

After building a database of nearly 1,200 meteorologists the site is now up and running. Hopefully it can do some good.

Hopefully, Dr. Jill Stein, the Green Party presidential candidate, will force Obama and Romney to make the environment destruction and current rapid Climate Change, a major debate and campaign issue.
That's why Dr. Stein deserves media attention and to be involved in presidential debates. But don't hold your breath, those of you who think Climate Change "must" not only become a major political issue to solve but may/will crush the American and global economies.
It will not happen because Americans will let the issue pass until it destroys all we know. Why? -- because people simply accept this destruction as part of the new normal.
Demand that the news media listen to -- and report -- Dr. Jill Stein's well-researched platform and be allowed to participate in the presidential debates.

Well written. Is it too much to ask people aspiring to a first or second term as leader of the free world? The current president has failed to summon the nation to this purpose in his first term. While he tried to get the policy done, he failed to lead. Mr. Romney fails the test emphatically. "More study is needed." No, more study is not needed in terms of information we need to act rationally. The point is this: We've only one planet on which to run this experiment. We've no choice but to act as though the fate of human civilization depends on our mobilizing for a war-time effort to transform how we live and how we consume energy.

Dr. Jim Hansen, head of NASA (moon landing) warned us of serious consequences of emissions in 1988. He strongly supports the "carbon fee and dividend", now held up in the House as HR3242. It would shift the market to green energy by adding some of the true cost of Carbon. It would lower taxes but hurt the bottom line of Dirty Energy. The Tea Party is expected to kill the bill. Citizens for Climate Lobby also supports it as does The Brookings Inst. and National Academy of Sciences. More on the CCL website.
