Don Gomez is a spokesperson for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America IAVA for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). IAVA is the country’s first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan Iraq and Afghanistan veterans group. Founded by Paul Rieckhoff in 2004, IAVA has more than 200,000 active veteran members and grassroots supporters nationwide.

Gomez is a former Army Sergeant who served in the Infantry from 2001 to 2006. He deployed to Iraq in 2003 with the 82nd Airborne Division for a one-year tour and redeployed again in 2005. Gomez graduated from the City College of New York (CUNY) on the GI Bill earning a degree in International Studies with a concentration in Middle Eastern Studies. At CUNY, Gomez founded the City College Veteran Association and was instrumental in establishing an Office of Veterans Affairs. Gomez is a 2009 recipient of the prestigious Truman Scholarship. He is currently pursuing graduate studies at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies.

He is a native of Queens, New York.

Ten years ago this April, I enlisted in the U.S. Army. During that time, I jumped out of airplanes, crawled, marched and ran thousands of miles, blew stuff up, met some of the most amazing people on Earth and served two tours in Iraq with the 82nd Airborne.
