The Dogs in Our Lives

Posted: Updated:

The other day, one of my clients sent this passage to me following the death of his dog and I'd like to share it with you:

"The dogs in our lives, the dogs we come to love and who [we fervently believe] love us in return, offer more than fidelity, consolation, and companionship. They offer comedy, irony, wit, and a wealth of anecdotes, the "shaggy dog stories" and "stupid pet tricks" that are commonplace pleasures of life. They offer, if we are wise enough or simple enough to take it, a model for what it means to give your heart with little thought of return. Both powerfully imaginary and comfortingly real, dogs act as mirrors for our own beliefs about what would constitute a truly humane society." [Marjorie Garber]

I thought author Marjorie Garber expressed exactly how I feel about my relationship with my own pets, Zack (a golden retriever), Lemon (a smart cat), and Oreo (lovable cat). It is comforting to know that they are in my life and offer hours of contentment and enjoyment each week.

For those readers who are looking to expand their home and heart with the introduction of a new pet, my practice, Animal Medical Center of Chicago at 1618 W. Diversey, is sponsoring an adoption event this Saturday, May 5 from 2:30 to 5 p.m. for 15 shelter dogs that are desperately looking for their "forever home." Please come and warm your heart. They will forever change your life.
