The World's Worst Beer (PHOTOS)

What's Your Reaction:

America didn't just repeat as producers of the world's worst beer, we increased our margin of victory by 7 points (in a new survey of 3,400 respondents from 99 countries). Hard to say if American beer is getting worse, or the rest of the world's beer production is improving. Or, perhaps our reputation is simply spreading. As the long-standing joke goes: What does American beer and making love in a canoe have in common? Both are amazingly close to water.

Here are the previous Titanic Award's survey results. For more of the "Worst of Travel", check out my book, The Titanic Awards.

Ok so who voted for UK and Italy?

Peroni is simply pretty damn good. A couple of others not too bad.

But the UK?  Home of Newcastle Brown Ale and Guinness Stout? What are those 3% thinking?

The UK should not have gotten a single vote for worst. And believe me, I am no UK fan at all. It hurts me to say it - LOL

Two groups voted for England--the French (just because) and American tourists who didn't think it was cold enough...
11:05 AM on 12/30/2010
Um, Newcastle and Guinness Stout are the beers from the UK that *we* drink in America. Same with Peroni - if you think anyone other than American tourists and a few random Italians drink Peroni, you clearly have never been to Italy...

Many beers we see in America rarely get drank overseas - they've got a variety of beer that would blow your mind, and probably some that suck. Haha, do you think Australians are being judged on Fosters? Remember, this survey was taken from 99 countries.

god saying childish things here too? My wife is from italy I have spent years there and would argue Peroni Nastro Azzurro is the most ubiiqutious beer in all of italy not that it is a bad thing

America wins this now just because of reputation. There are plenty of other countries in Asia and Latin America that have crap beer. And there are enough regional beer brands now that it's easy to find a good American beer. I will prove my point with two simple words: Magic Hat #9 (two words and a number)

But abroad, America is much better known for Budweiser and Miller than it is for a small local brewing company. Just as in the states we might equate Fosters with Australia, Amstel with the Netherlands, and Peroni with Italy. Rest assured, those beers are considered the bottom of the barrel over there, just as many Americans consider Bud and Miller to be bottom tier beer.

Finally, I can weigh in on a subject I'm qualified to mouth off about. Beer. Tried it all over the world. Writing from Belgrade at the moment. Been here a month. Good beer to be found.
In Italy next week. I'll be drinking wine there.
Lets get to American beer. Whatever they put in those cans of bud is not beer. Lets call it slightly yeasty water. Undrinkable. And I will go without a beer if that's all they're serving. Same for coors and miller.
There are many excellent smaller breweries in the states, but I guess we're talking about the big labels.
What I've discovered is that the imported beers we get in the states are not the same as you find in the country of origin.
Spent some time in Austria and drank Gosser like a baby on his mother's teat. Thrilled to discover that I could get it back home. Guess what? It wasn't the same. It was good. A bit watered down. And I wondered if they were brewing it here and slapping the labels on or exporting a special "budweisered" brew just for us?
Damn, I'm rambling about beer. Sorry. Time to go. Getting thirsty.

"What I've discovered is that the imported beers we get in the states are not the same as you find in the country of origin."

You're exactly right. Plus, we don't get most of the beers you see abroad. Just as the US is known across the pond for Budweiser and Miller, Italy is known here for Peroni, the Netherlands for Amstel, Australia for Fosters, etc etc. Good rant. I'll still drink Coors or Bud if it's cheap, because I'm not quite a beer snob (beerophile?) yet.

I'm not a beer drinker, but I did drink some when I was in college. Why? Because Genesee Beer's "Little Gennies" were only ten cents for a draft. For another buck, you could get a serving of marinated lamb in a pita and call it a meal. It wasn't a good meal, but 20-year-old bodies can endure a lot.

I'm sure the Little Gennies were not representive of good beer. But the one that really gave definition to the term panther piss was Rupert's Knickerbocker. I once had a bottle of the stuff that wasn't only green in terms of its not having aged enough. It was freaking GREEN. And it wasn't St. Patrick's Day.

Not at all surprised the US gets such low marks for beer.

Of all the countries I've been to, I'd have to say Australian beer is the worst. It's even worse than the American Budweiser (if that's possible). I can't figure out how the Aussies can swallow it. I guess if its cold and wet that's what matters when it's 110 degrees in the outback...

The best I've had is from Belgium and the Czech Republic.

Please add Belize to the top of this list. Due to their crazy import laws you are essentially forced into drinking Belikin, which has to be the worst beer on the planet. I tried bringing some Negro Modelo across the border from Mexico and they confiscated it!

That's lame. Slap Belikin labels on it next time. LOL

Pretty positive you can get Negro Modelo in the states. No need to risk having your delicious beer confiscated!

I was very disappointed when they started making Lowenbrau in America instead of importing it.
02:12 AM on 12/17/2010
Sheesh. I live in a medium-sized town (~100K people) surrounded by rural areas, and I don't have to leave the city to buy Aventinus or Weihenstephaner, and people are lamenting the loss of Lowenbrau...

IPA cannot hold a candle to a good, fresh German pilsner or hefe-weissen. I love me some IPA but, the German pils or hefe-weissen is above all else.

Right, but having the odd bad beer among dozens or hundreds of good ones hardly rates inclusion on the same list as France or China. My two weeks in England was a beer lover's paradise. Likewise Australia; not as good as England, perhaps, but what's it doing on such a list?

I wondered the same thing.

You can never go wrong with NewCastle and if you are in the mood a Guinness.

My theory is actually that UK beer is as good as the best because it can be drunk at room temp. Traditional Brits don't chill the beer so much as the rest of the world.

If you are going to drink room temp beer, it better be good. I love NewCastle.

PBR, Old Style, and Modelo Negro are the best cheap brew.

Negro Modelo isn't really a "cheap beer", in the States OR in Mexico.

I personally prefer Rainier or Olympia when it comes to cheap swill, unfortunately most people outside the Northwest don't know what I'm talking about.

But here's one of the best, San Miguel beer from the Philippines.

Most imported beer is "skunky". Even some microbrews are that way. They sit around for too long before someone can buy them.
08:55 PM on 12/15/2010
With all theses connoisseurs posting, we should do a guilty pleasures list. What's your favorite bad beer? I'll go with Tecate in a can (cause its cheap).

Yeah, Tecate isn't bad. In the U.S. I like Rainier, Olympia or PBR if they aren't available (Miller High Life is a decent "bad" beer too).

Mexico has tons of great "bad" beer, Sol, Corona, Tecate, etc. I love a weak Mexican beer with some salt and lime, and this is coming from a guy who prefers Porters and Stouts!

I would not drink Bud, Coors, etc., if you gave me a case of them free. The stuff is crap. I call them pi**. Now a nice chilled Heineken or Red Stripe... way to go!
06:48 PM on 12/15/2010
Haha, you fail at beer. You can do way better than any of the beers you listed. Is pale lager the only one of the 73 or so beer styles you ever drink?

Heineken is not pale, and it has body and Red Stripe has strength! Now also a good draft guinness goes down the pipe pretty well even the canned version without the gas.

Heiniken has no body. It's a lager which are lighter by definition. IPA's, Porters and Stouts have body.

Heiniken, Red Stripe and American major brews are similar in style. They just make you feel better because you're paying more.

I fall somewhere in between. I love a nice craft beer, but I have no problem drinking whatever swill is put in front of me. Bad beer is still beer!
