ESPN's Kenny Mayne Picks Up Saturday Super Bowl Fight

In 2010, I made the argument for HuffingtonPost that the National Football League's Super Bowl has become a national holiday and should thus be moved to Saturday. It remains perhaps the wisest suggestion since I counseled Simon Cowell to wear v-neck tees and speak with a British accent (it's fake - he's really Dutch).

Now it seems ESPN's very funny Kenny Mayne agrees.

"I've been reporting on sports for what feels like 56 years and I can say without question that the Super Bowl is every bit as big as the Grey Cup - don't ever question me," said Mayne. "But having the big game on Sunday is about as relevant as something not relevant. It's time to move the Super Bowl to Saturday...."

He's taken up the mantle at MoveTheBigGame.com, where you can find a very funny video (below) of Mayne walking and cabbing through Manhattan to make his argument, along with a point-by-point outline and other means of supporting his proposed movement.

But let's cut to the chase: It's an unabashed argument for alcoholism, as on the day that's essentially become an American national holiday, we drink, eat, drink more, and the next day at work our productivity is vastly deficient as Americans recover and talk about what a letdown the game and commercials were. It's also why recently released Kantar Media data shows Anheuser-Busch/InBev has spent more on Super Bowl advertising since 2003 than any other brand.

Either way, one can't help but like the cut of Mayne's jib in his endeavor to Move The Big Game, even if the Japanese girls he accosts believe the New York Yankees will be playing in this year's Super Bowl.
