ANTHONY HASSAN was appointed clinical associate professor at the USC School of Social Work in 2009 and serves as the inaugural director of the Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans and Military Families. Hassan is a retired Air Force officer with 25 years of experience in military social work and leadership development.

His career has been marked by an interest in administration, leadership and innovation. Hassan previously served as deputy head of the Leadership Directorate and director of the master's degree program in counseling and leadership at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Prior to the Air Force Academy, he was CEO of a community mental health center, which was ranked "best clinic" for productivity and above all other community mental health centers in the region. Hassan has also directed several family violence, substance abuse and inpatient psychiatric programs in the United States and abroad. He was deployed as a member of a combat stress control team during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004.

Hassan's clinical and administrative experiences have been complemented by more than a decade of teaching experiences at the graduate and undergraduate levels, including courses in social work, behavioral sciences and leadership. He has special expertise in conceptualization of competencies and learning outcomes. His current research focus is social work with veterans and military families. Hassan's experiences in creating change in clients have led to his interests in facilitating change in leaders, teachers and organizations.

His scholarship is diverse with publications and presentations in leadership, higher education administration, military and pedagogy. Hassan's most recent publication is the book, Foundations for Leadership Development, 2009. He currently serves as an appointed member to the Council on Social Work Education's Commission on Professional Development.
