Obama, the Black Church and Gay Marriage: Things the President Might Want to Know

Posted: 05/16/2012 4:48 pm

I have a confession to make:  I've never understood the vehement opposition that the black church has to gay marriage.  Don't get me wrong, I understand what the bible has to say on the matter, but since when did every Christian live according to the bible?  I mean, seriously, would you take a lie detector test and answer the question, "Do most Christians try their best to live according to the bible?"  The answer to that question might get you struck down by lightning.

The other day, while analyzing the strong reaction of many black churches to President Obama's decision to endorse gay marriage, something hit me:   It's OK to be gay and even to be gay within the walls of the black church.  The key is that you simply can't be gay in public.

OK, before you go nuts, just hear me out on this one.   Everybody knows at least one gay choir director.  A lot of us know about gay pastors like Bishop Eddie Long, many of whom run in packs with other gay preachers who condemn homosexuality on Sundays and are snapping and switchin in the club on Friday nights.  There are also the brothers on the down low, who speak of their hatred of homosexuality primarily because their attraction to other men is the part of themselves that they hate the most.

Most of us know what happens in many black churches across America, and we are aware of the blatant hypocrisy. But this doesn't mean that every Christian is a fraud or that church is meaningless; rather, it means that we are imperfect human beings seeking to live by standards that we sometimes fail to meet.   Most of us accept these imperfections, which is why parishioners continue to love Deacon Smith, even if we can't ever imagine him making love to a woman.

The black church has always been forced to accept homosexuality within its ranks.  The problem, it seems, is when gay people are actually proud of being gay. When they want to kiss, hold hands, get married and secure equal rights, that can be too much for some black Christians to bear.   Hypocrisy is easy to manage if you can keep it snug within your subconscious, but it's painful to deal with when it slaps you in the face.  For some, gay pride is like showing off your fat belly in a halter top or going outside without makeup: People don't fault you for your "condition," but might become upset that you aren't as ashamed as they would be.  That's where all of those "interesting" gay-corrective classes come from... they just want to help you get well.

So, my conclusion?  For some people, homosexuality can be compared to using the bathroom:  We know that it happens on a regular basis, but no one wants to see you do it in the street.  By asking devout Christians to support a politician who openly promotes an activity (gay marriage) that the bible clearly states to be a one way ticket to hell, Obama is asking many Christians to sign off on their own spiritual death certificate.  This one is going to be tough to pull off.

perhaps why the black church has been open to receiving homosexuals is that homosexualization has been part of the slavery agenda. . .?

"vehement opposition that the black church has to gay marriage"?

I don't get why the media (and this writer) get pushing "how opposed the Black Church is to Gay Marriage". There are 45Million African American in America, and 2 or 5 or 10 or 100 Black Ministers do not and cannot speak for ALL Black Churches or All Black Ministers, and certainly not for ALL African Americans.

It's good to call out cherrypicked hatred. Many Christians obsessively opposed to specific Biblical sins are cherrypickers, and go after the vulnerable, convenient targets rather than start with themselves.

I love having faith. I even love understanding faiths that are not my own. Faith is incredibly powerful, whether you put your faith in God, in humanity, in justice, in science, faith is a pretty unique human attribute.

However, if we accept that all faith - all conviction - is equally protected by the constitution then the Bible has no place in the conversation of gay rights. Neither does the Torah, the Quran, or the Buddhist ten perfections. It doesn't matter if you approve. I mean that with the greatest of respect! I don't think anyone should *have* to accept homosexuality, but you don't have the right - as in the CONSTITUTIONAL right - to a prevent it. It is not mine, nor anyone else's, right to prevent two consenting adults from entering into a contract. This is not about sin. The US government cannot (and should not) regulate morality. The government can however regulate the concept of equal protection under the law.

You don't have to give up your faith. But you don't have a constitutional argument against this. Being gay might well be a sin but preventing gay rights IS undeniably discrimination.

Is discrimination a sin?

If your logic is true, then society does not have the right to discriminate against any type of behaviors, whether it is murder, stealing, pedophilia and any other antisocial behaviors. Behaviors are choices (preferences), they are not rights.

I disagree with the premise that homosexuality is a choice, so perhaps we're at an impasse. Being left handed used to be seen as "not right" and something that needed to be "corrected". People are born left handed. People are also born gay.

The difference between being gay and the other things you listed - murder, pedophilia - is that those are crimes in which there is a victim. Someone is doing the bad behavior to someone else. There's no victim to being gay.

Can you prove that homosexuality is a choice?

Just as the writer said - there are black men and women in the church everyone knows they are gay, as well as ministers who are gay and flirt/sleep with both men and women. There are pastors who prey on women who are not their wives as well. And, we all know who they are and they sleep with them. What's the difference between the gay minister and the straight one? You easily accept the straight one, while the gay one is reprehensible. Convenient judging.

People judge every day, every choice that is made is a judgement. When we purchase a vanilla ice cream instead of strawberry it is a judgment. Is the choice convenient or preferential? It is based on preferences. Thus, behaviors are based on preferences, they are not rights. For instance, society judges murderers, thieves, and pedophiles. Would you classify it as convenient judging?

The article is about this author's perceptions of attitudes in the Black Church about being gay and gay marriage. Civil perspectives were not considered in his discussion.

Good point, who follows the complete Bible ? No human, people only select convenient portions that they like.

Okay. You just about have it. I agree with it all except Christians don't want a public disobedience to the word; or as you said it (with some additions), we don't want you to be proud of your sins. We smirk and giggle at our own inabilities to be perfect saints so we understand the wonderful Christian who happens to have a different sexual orientation. We all quietly carry our personal sins but a pronouncement of sin or a proud declaration almost defies the existence of God. If God is God and you are a good Christian, why are you not heeding the Holy Spirit who guides us and convicts us when we do wrong? I thought you had the same reverence that I have but now that I see you don't want to repent, I must step up and declare you as reprobate. I cannot support sinning without repentance.

There is no Church of the United States of America, there never has been , in fact we have separation of state and church. I can and do believe what the bible teaches on homosexuality as a matter of my faith but still believe that that as a matter of civil rights all men and women should have the same rights. The church does not issue marriage licenses the States does. So even though we want to claim marriage as a religious issue in this country, it is a State issue. Show up at your church in your White Dress and the groom in his tux and no license , no marriage. We have confused two totally separate issues. Practice your faith, but when it comes to the public square no one should be denied life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness , that's according to our Constutution. And because of poor bible teaching or no bible teaching we somehow think that the church and state was mixed during biblical times, it was not.

Just want to understand. That it's ok to preach during the month of February, and on special occassions/ceremonies (i.e. in remembrance of the late Dr. King jr.) about A Dream for ALL of God's Children ----

The problem with some Christians is their ability preach to you holding a bible in one hand and a yellow highlighter in the other. Unfortunately , their family bible at home sits comfortably next to a bottle of white out.

Red in the face, screaming, ugly signs, extremely flexible moral/ethical standards when it comes to that "man" in the White House, yet they call themselves "Christians" almost to a man/woman. Same people who felt it was just "dandy" to lynch Black men "and" women whenever the mood struck them and you would find them in "church" every Sunday. Why Black people would follow and believe in such a creed has mystified and puzzled me since i was a child. Just watching these so-called "Christian" politicians "bear false witness" day after day is really quite enough to repudiate anything the "Bible" has to say. I have heard, been told that: "GOD does not make mistakes" therefore Gay people "must" be as GOD made them and should have the right to marry if they so choose.
01:53 AM on 05/22/2012
The Bible clearly says that homosexuality is a no-no. Why is it so hard to understand that?

Black Americans have a choice, you either follow the Bible or not.

The bible says eating shellfish is a sin as well. What's your point?

For those of us who do not like PDA because there is a time and place for everything, I can understand your "concern" for Obama's change of heart regarding homosexual marriages. But my questions is if two people love one another and genuinely are living together as a family, why can they not have insurance and benefits that married heterosexual couples do? We do not know their personal situations, only God does and Jesus did say judge not lest ye be judged. God can and will deal with all of us according to our deeds. Our anger over the support of gay marriages is as hypocritical as our non-suppport of homeless/battered women, men and/or children in our communities. Our not "seeing" the drug dealers deal and not speaking up out of fear. Writing bad checks, buying bling when our children need food, clothing and time spent with them to help them be better educated. When we don't do what we know is good, it is as bad as being a part of the problem. Do we ALWAYS do and know what is right? Jesus walked with prostitutes and tax collectors ( the most abhorred ) and the Bible says he was tempted in all ways, so he also dealt with homosexuality. Let's just do our part and NOT throw the baby out with the bathwater by condemning Obama and not voting! If congress had supported him from the jump, we'd have made more progress!

He also said to beware of deceivers and to look and learn. Moreover, that when the days of Lot are returning know that the time is near. Notice, however, that if you are incapable of discerning (judging), it will be difficult to know the deceiver. Yes, Jesus walked with sinners, but He always exhorted them to sin no more (change their behaviors). The Bible documents God's destruction of Sodom because they were knowingly doing bad things; so, we are confronted with a clear choice support God or Obama. Where is the greater reward?
