Why is it that children can be so carefree and lighthearted, finding joy in even the smallest and most mundane things? As adults we tend to forget how to appreciate the little things in life. We let ourselves become saddled down with stress and worries, which eventually take their toll on our hearts, bodies and spirits. To rejuvenate our physical, emotional and spiritual selves, it is important to truly appreciate and celebrate this short life we have by learning to live in the moment. Being mindful and being present is the only way to enjoy life to the fullest.
We can all learn a great deal from the way children approach life. Rather than allowing the worries and troubles of the day to continue to tear at your soul and spirit, become engaged in the joy of living for that particular moment. If it's raining, turn your face to the sky and taste it. Roll in the grass and squish your toes in the mud. Enjoy every sensation that comes with being alive, and be thankful for the gift of life.
Even in the most difficult circumstances, we can focus on a single moment that provides a reason to be joyful. As you become aware of the moment by being more mindful, you begin to connect with your inner self, and this helps to energize your soul with essential nourishment to counterbalance any negative emotions that you may be feeling.
There many benefits to fully living and experiencing a single moment of life. For one, you feel less stressed, which causes a decrease in the levels of cortisol and adrenaline coursing through your body. Cortisol and adrenaline increase your heart rate, blood pressure and glucose levels. In addition, you tend to breathe more deeply when you are being present and aware, thus greatly improving circulation. Finally, your mood will be elevated and you will feel more at peace with yourself and the world around you.
At first it may not be easy to get in touch with your inner self and fully appreciate the moment. Learning how to slow down the pace is crucial to honing your focus and awareness, and one of the best ways to train yourself to slow things down is by practicing meditation. Studies show that meditation can help you relax the mind, reduce stress and lower blood pressure. This puts you in a state of restful alertness and allows you to become more receptive to your emotions.
Gratitude is another way to remind yourself of the good in the world so that you can fully appreciate life. Every morning before I get out of bed, and every evening before I fall asleep, I try to think of three things to be grateful for. This could be anything from my children to a smile from a stranger on the street. Even if I've had a bad day, I find that there is always something to be thankful for.
Of course the right food, exercise and healthy lifestyle changes will rejuvenate your body, strengthen your heart, and revitalize your mind. However, gaining an understanding of our emotions and learning how to live soulfully and spiritually in the moment are also essential to heart health. To live a rich and full life that is full of vitality and health, take a page from a children's book and learn how to delight in the random moments that come your way.
