How Toxins Make You Fat: 4 Steps to Get Rid of Toxic Weight

Posted: 02/25/2012 10:21 am

Scientists recently uncovered a surprising and disturbing fact: Environmental toxins make you fat and can cause diabetes. (1) Inside the body, these chemicals monkey with our ability to balance blood sugar and metabolize cholesterol. Over time, the changes can lead to insulin resistance. This discovery should be headline news, but no one is talking about it. Why? Because there are no drugs to treat it. In the quest to conquer the two biggest epidemics of our time -- diabetes and obesity -- we've got to turn our attention to the heavy burden environmental toxins put on our bodies.

Until conventional medicine catches up, you've got to optimize your body's ability to rid itself of toxins. If your body's detoxification tools aren't up to snuff, waste will build up. Over time, the damage is similar to what happens when trash collectors go on strike and don't pick up the garbage off the streets. The waste piles high, making the neighborhood smell bad and creating a breeding ground for illness.

Don't let the word detoxification turn you off. You may think it sounds like a New Age idea or something from celebs in Hollywood on the heels of an alcohol or drug binge, but detoxification is a normal, everyday function. It's the body's way of breaking down and eliminating anything that doesn't belong. And, these days, there are a lot of things our bodies come into contact with that don't belong.

We live in an environment steeped in chemicals that our bodies were not designed to process. For a disturbing look at the chemicals that breach the boundaries of our bodies, look no further than the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals . In the latest report, scientists at the CDC found that nearly every person they tested was packing a host of nasty chemicals, including flame retardants stored in fatty tissue and Bisphenol A, a hormone-like substance found in plastics, excreted in urine. (2) Even babies are contaminated. The average newborn has 287 chemicals in her umbilical cord blood, 217 of which are neurotoxic (poisonous to nerves or nerve cells). (3)

Take Out The Trash

While it's true that we live in a toxic world, it's important to remember that there is a lot you can do to enhance your body's natural ability to detox. The body has four main exit routes for toxins: pee, poop, perspiration and pranayama (Sanskrit for breath). I call these the quadruple "P." Every moment of every day your body is relying on the quadruple "P" to mobilize, transform, and excrete toxins. Here is a quick primer on how to make the most of each strategy:

Pee: The kidneys are responsible for flushing waste from the blood. Make sure you give them what they need by drinking plenty of water. Humans are predominately composed of water (about 66 percent by weight for men, about 60 percent for women). Drink plenty of clean water, at least eight 8-ounce glasses of filtered water a day. One of the first signs of dehydration is the color of your urine. Your urine should be mostly clear (clear enough to read a newspaper through) or with only a slight tinge of yellow. (If you take vitamins, keep in mind that some nutrients, especially riboflavin, causes your urine to turn bright yellow.) But, if your urine is dark yellow or has a strong odor, chances are you aren't drinking enough.

And, of course, you'll want to make sure you're not upending your actions by dousing your body with more chemicals. In many communities, tap water is not safe to drink and bottled water isn't much better. The best option is to filter your own water and carry it with you in stainless steel bottles. If possible, install a reverse osmosis filter in your house, at least for your drinking water or use a carbon filter (like Brita).

Poop: One or two well-formed bowel movements every day is one of the best ways to give toxins a one-way ticket out of your body. If that goal seems high you're not alone. As many as 20 percent of people struggle with constipation and, unfortunately, the problem can get more onerous with aging. (4) But bowel function is something you have a lot of control over. For starters, up your fiber intake. Fiber cleans out the colon by making our stool heftier and easier to expel.

Secondly, drink plenty of water. The body is very good at conserving water. Sometimes it's almost too good. When the walls of the colon suck too much moisture out of stool, it dries and hardens, which can lead to pebble-like poop and constipation. Drinking more water and other liquids during the day (aim for eight 8-ounce glasses) can make your BMs softer and easier to expel. (5) And, if you still can't get going, then you need some help and this can include taking two tablespoons of ground flax seeds, taking acidophilus and extra magnesium capsules in the form of magnesium citrate.

Perspiration: Your skin is your single largest organ of elimination. Make sure you're maximizing the detox potential of your pores by working up a sweat at least three times a week. Of course, heart-thumping exercise that gets the body sweating for 20 minutes, three times a week is ideal, since it confers other health benefits. But, if that is not an option, consider using a sauna, steam or detox bath to trigger the body's natural ability to detoxify itself through sweat.

People have long gravitated toward heat as a means of cleansing the physical and emotional body. In particular, people in Scandinavian countries have used saunas for hundreds of years. Some research indicates that sauna therapy increases excretion of heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, and fat-soluble chemicals -- PCBs, PBBs, and HCBs). Taking saunas or steam baths also helps reduce stress and balance the autonomic nervous system. (6) (Sauna temperatures should be no higher than 140 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit for those with environmental illness or a history of increased toxic exposure.) On a purely physical note, sauna therapy can improve circulation, help with weight loss, balance blood sugar and improve detoxification. While the exact mechanism is not clear, it is likely due to its effects on calming the nervous system, relaxing the muscles, and increasing vasodilation. If you don't have access to a sauna, you can use my favorite technique to heat up and sweat, the UltraBath.

Pranayama: The lungs are the unsung heroes of the body's detox squad. With each breath, they bring in fresh oxygen and help transport it throughout the body. Unfortunately, the air we breathe is not always clean. Every day the lungs filter out carcinogens in gas fumes, allergens from pets and plants, and spores of mold. Restricted or shallow breathing can diminish the power of the lungs by preventing oxygen from reaching all of your tissues. Breathing deeply and fully will oxygenate your brain, body, and spirit, transforming your health in the process.

One of the best ways to harness the power of the lungs to heal and detoxify is to learn how to belly breathe. Start by putting your hand on your belly. Breathe out, squeezing the air out of your lungs with your stomach muscles. As you breathe in, relax your stomach muscles and, after filling your lungs, try to push your hand off your belly with your breath, filling the lower part of your lungs. Continue to breathe in and out slowly through your nose. Each in and out breath should last to the count of three. Do this for five minutes a day.

If you are struggling to lose weight despite eating well and exercising your butt off, toxins may be interfering with your body's metabolism. Consider applying the rules of the quadruple "P" to your life. a steam bath/sit in the sauna is also an excellent NON-FOOD way of rewarding yourself after a workout :) and I gotta say, it really does seem to encourage weight loss. I've been trying to google a few good answers as to why this is because really, it doesn't seem like I'm sweating buckets or anything while I'm in there, but your explanation really makes sense. thanks!

I have always heard how the sauna is great for you, even how bikram(?) yoga is intense but the heat is amazing for you; however, I find it so difficult to breath in such high heat. Thats why I dislike over-heated houses and vehicles, and feel the desperate need to open a window and breathe in the cool, fresh air. Any suggestions on how I could get around this, or an explanation as to why I may have trouble breathing in the first place?

Have long thought that the environmental impact upon all living things was monumental and this article brings it to life. Why would the pharmaceutical companies proclaim it loud and clear when they have no magic pill to cover the problem, but a plethora of meds to combat the consequences of it. They are actually making more profit from all these meds than they would from any med that would eliminate these problems. Unfortunately "money talks" I am sorry to say.

A great way to detox is through antioxidants, and the one antioxidant that gives the best 1,2,3 punch, AND is actually documented in many published articles and research studies is pycnogenol. Check out ultimateisotonix.com for one of the top products that works amazing as an anti inflammatory due to its advanced delivery of this top quality nutrient. Check it out and thank me later!

If we only could buy "raw" milk. I grew up with it and I miss it terribly and it was healthy. This homogenized milk that has been heated had to have all the nutrients killed and then they add a few Vit D, and it contains puss and blood feces. Someone needs to set the politicians straight! Don't they have family or do they import their food? I wonder though, why dairy products are not good. I mean what better way than yogurt to keep your intestines clean? Someone please explain.
07:53 PM on 02/28/2012
Yogurt is great...however most of the healthy bacteria that our intestines need is killed in the stomach acids and upper intestines before it can make it to our lower intestines where it is best utilized. That is why a GOOD probiotic works wonders! :) hope that helps.

It is a hot bath with 1 cup epsom (magnesium) salts, 1 cup baking soda and 10 drops lavendar essential oil.

Be sure to filter the chlorine out of the bath water as it goes in the tub if you don't have a whole house filter. There are many filters available for your faucet or showerhead if you just google it or look on Amazon.

I like to add dim the lights, some nice music, maybe a candle and ahhh, relax!

Bacon. sausages, red meats, butter, eggs, white bread, beer, cigarettes, full fat milk, cake and chocolate- Are you trying to tell me I am toxic?
I feel great!
07:53 PM on 02/26/2012
Lose the cigarettes and probably the white bread. Have the beet and cake and chocolate just occasionally and ensure all the rest are of high quality and you'll be doing very well.

Dr. Hyman, excellent article and I agree totally with what you are saying. However I know what is making me sick and am doing chelation but haven't noticed any improvement. I have a lot of gadolinium in my tissue and organs. When I lost weight I got sick and it kept getting worse. I have heard that chemotherapy drugs do the same and that when released from the fat cells it sickens the host. I think this makes sense but I'm also told that gadolinium gets released from the bone. My question is do you think when you lose weight the toxins get released from the fat cells and have the potential to make one sick when this happens.

Yes, when you lose weight the toxins get released from your fat cells. Humans and other animals store toxins in their body fat. That is why I eat grass-fed beef and other meat. Industrial/CAFO meat is loaded with toxins.

You may want to check out a heavy metal detox endorsed by Drs. Mercola and Yu. They have the evidence of its effectiveness, but given your situation I'd clear it with your doctor first.

Learn about it in the post, "The Ultimate Chemical, Heavy Metal Detox" http://wp.me/pA04z-Ua There's two videos there as well as a write-up.

Also, detox baths are great. Instructions for one is at the bottom of this post (go there and scroll down): "Detoxifying Your Way to Nirvana" http://wp.me/pA04z-4p

I take a detox bath too.

1 cup baking soda
2 cups Epsom salt
1/3 cup hydrogen peroxide

I drink coconut water. I'll try the one you mentioned but I'm so weak now. I wish I'd turn a corner. I also take saunas almost every day for 40 minutes. I drink coconut water and use oils.

Clients come to me for weight loss. Because they have failed so miserably in healthy living, most have closed their eyes to what they've been doing.

We start with only one goal in mind, weight loss. I teach them a method that works every time. They eat only foods they like, in a way that always leads to weight loss. Exercise is optional. We use an approach that creates a new attitude and caring about ourselves, and new behavior begins to take hold.

After a while a funny thing happens. Not only are they losing weight, but their nutrition improves. People start exercising and eating better. If we care for ourselves and make health a priority, everything changes when we keep the task simple. We don't need to worry about getting rid of toxins when we practice a reasonable and scientific method of weight loss. Our body and mind will do it for us, automatically.

When I was overweight in the great American way, I hate to think about all the junk I was passing through my body. When I burned off 140 pounds of excess fat, I rid myself not only of the weight, but the toxins that were stored in the fat and the typical American diet that created it. Keep it simple, shoot for a healthy body weight, and the toxins will leave on their own.

If you want to lose fat, get in shape and feel better, the real "detox" is regular, hearty exercise (weight training, cardio) and eating a nutritious diet without indulging in excessive refined carbs and fatty foods. Lean meats, complex carbs, and colorful veggies are the ticket. Ditch the McDonalds and Pizza, get a gym membership, and go for it. I lost 100 pounds naturally and kept it off and there was no secret or "new fad diet" to it. My bloodwork is healthy now and I look and feel great. It isn't magic!

H Mark, I am curious about mercury toxicity specifically because when I was tested several years ago, my mercury toxicity levels were off the charts so my doctor hooked me up to some intravenous chelation device (EDTA?) that ended up giving me flu-like symptoms. I never retested the levels and was just wondering if a one-time treatment such as EDTA usually does the trick or would a daily dose of cilantro/chlorella be a better solution. Thanks for the input. PS I really love your books and just picked up The Blood Sugar Solution--fantastic! Bravo!

When you were going through chelation, did you get extra vitamin, mineral supplements? I had mercury poisoning and did chelation. I forgot how many times, but they tested for mercury several times during the course of the treatments. "One time treatment". Do you literally mean just one IV?Or you mean one series? The former isn't enough to either get it all or give you flu like symptoms, the latter could get it all. Whether you stay mercury free, depends on how you got it in the first place. What was the source? Are you still exposed to it?

Sharon have you tried iodine in the form of Lugol's? I have had heavy metals to chelate as well and have found that Lugol's in fantastic. I take 2 drops in each of my two morning cups of coffee and cannot taste it. As the iodine forces the heavy metals out your cells your body will send selenium and magnesium to mop it up and take it to your bowel for dumping, so you can become deficient in both of those if you don' t supplement. I eat 4 to 6 brazil nuts every day which gives me a large and high quality dose of selenium, and I take a magnesium tablet every night and use a little bit of magnesium oil as a top up. The first few weeks were hard because I had so much bromide in my system, and it's recommended to follow the protocol for at least a year, and then drop the Lugol's down to two drops per day and it can remain as a permanent iodine supplement in the diet...two drops is about what a high-iodine content Japanese seafood diet would give you. Good luck...hope something works!

I know of no randomized controlled trial that discusses the so called "toxins" and how they effect or do not effect our body. Can someone measure these before and after a detox program to see if there is a difference? Until then it is hogwash.

OK, from Wikipedia:

"Obesogens are foreign chemical compounds that disrupt normal development and balance of lipid metabolism, which in some cases, can lead to obesity.

Obesogens may be functionally defined as chemicals that inappropriately alter lipid homeostasis and fat storage, change metabolic setpoints, disrupt energy balance or modify the regulation of appetite and satiety to promote fat accumulation and obesity."

That makes sense, yet I don't see how that provides evidence for "detox" programs.
