Avoid This If You Want To Keep Your Thyroid Healthy

Posted: 03/04/2010 9:18 am

If you are like most people, you probably haven't spent much time thinking about how much bromine you're absorbing from your car upholstery or your Mountain Dew. But bromine toxicity is a definite danger from some surprising sources, and it can wreak havoc on your health.

Bromines All Around You

Bromines are common endocrine disruptors, and are part of the halide family, a group of elements that includes fluorine, chlorine and iodine. What makes it so dangerous is that it competes for the same receptors that are used to capture iodine.

If you are exposed to a lot of bromine, your body will not hold on to the iodine that it needs. And iodine affects every tissue in your body -- not just your thyroid.

You are already exposed to far too much chlorine and bromine. Bromine can be found in a number of places in your everyday world, including:

•Pesticides (specifically methyl bromide, used mainly on strawberries, predominantly in California)

•Plastics, like those used to make computers

•Bakery goods and some flours often contain a "dough conditioner" called potassium bromate

•Soft drinks (including Mountain Dew, Gatorade, Sun Drop, Squirt, Fresca and other citrus-flavored sodas), in the form of brominated vegetable oils (BVOs)

•Medications such as Atrovent Inhaler, Atrovent Nasal Spray, Pro-Banthine (for ulcers), and anesthesia agents

•Fire retardants (common one is polybromo diphenyl ethers or PBDEs) used in fabrics, carpets, upholstery, and mattresses

•Bromine-based hot tub and swimming pool treatments

According to van Leeuwen, who has extensively studied the effects of sodium bromide on thyroid function:

"Although the bromide ion is widely distributed in nature, the main route of exposure in humans stems from bromide residues in food commodities as a result of the abundant use of bromide-containing pesticides, like methylbromide and ethylene dibromide, for soil fumigation in intensive horticulture and for postharvest treatment."

One clinical consequence of overexposure to bromine is suppression of your thyroid, leading to hypothyroidism, which will be discussed shortly. Another is bromide toxicity.

Bromine -- The Bully of the Halide Group

When you ingest or absorb bromine, it displaces iodine, and this iodine deficiency leads to an increased risk for cancer of the breast, thyroid gland, ovary and prostate -- cancers that we see at alarmingly high rates today. This phenomenon is significant enough to have been given its own name -- the Bromide Dominance Theory.

Aside from its effects on your endocrine glands, bromine is toxic in and of itself. Bromide builds up in your central nervous system and results in many problems. It is a central nervous system depressant and can trigger a number of psychological symptoms such as acute paranoia and other psychotic symptoms.

In fact, in an audio interview, physician Jorge Flechas reported that, between 1920 and 1960, at least 20 percent of all hospital admissions for "acute paranoid schizophrenia" were a result of ingesting bromine-containing products.

In addition to psychiatric problems, bromine toxicity can manifest as the following:

•Skin rashes and severe acne

•Loss of appetite and abdominal pain

•Fatigue

•Metallic taste

•Cardiac arrhythmias

Baby Boomers might recall a popular product from the 1950s called Bromo-Seltzer. These effervescent granules, developed by the Emerson Drug Company of Baltimore, were used to treat heartburn, upset stomach, indigestion, headaches and hangovers.

Bromo-Selzer's original formula contained 3.2 mEq/teaspoon of sodium bromide -- hence the name. The sedative effect probably explained its popularity as a hangover remedy. Bromides were withdrawn from the American market in 1975 due to their toxicity.

Bromo-Selzer is still on the market, but no longer contains bromide.

Bromines in Your Bread Box: Potassium Bromate

The ban on bromines have not prevented them from sneaking into your foods and personal care products.

You probably are not aware of this, but nearly every time you eat bread in a restaurant or consume a hamburger or hotdog bun you are consuming bromide, as it is commonly used in flours.

The use of potassium bromate as an additive to commercial breads and baked goods has been a huge contributor to bromide overload in Western cultures.

Bromated flour is "enriched" with potassium bromate. Commercial baking companies claim it makes the dough more elastic and better able to stand up to bread hooks. However, Pepperidge Farm and other successful companies manage to use only unbromated flour without any of these so-called "structural problems."

Potassium bromate is also found in some toothpastes and mouthwashes, where it's added as an antiseptic and astringent. It has been found to cause bleeding and inflammation of gums in people using these products.

Sodium Bromate and BMOs

Mountain Dew, one of the worst beverages you can drink, uses brominated vegetable oil as an emulsifier. Not only that, it contains high fructose corn syrup, sodium benzoate, more than 55 mg of caffeine per 12 ounce can, and Yellow Dye #5 (tartrazine, which has been banned in Norway, Austria and Germany.)

A weapon of mass destruction -- in a can.

Even drinking water can be a source of bromide. When drinking water containing bromide is exposed to ozone, bromate ions are formed, which are powerful oxidizing agents. Such was the case in 2004 when Coca Cola Company had to recall Dasani bottled water.

Sodium bromate can also be found in personal care products such as permanent waves, hair dyes, and textile dyes. Benzalkonium is used as a preservative in some cosmetics.

Finally, bromine and chlorine were the most common toxic elements reportedly found in automobiles, according to the blog of David Brownstein, MD (March 2007). They showed up in the seats, armrests, door trim, shift knobs and other areas of the car.

Think about how much time you spend enclosed in your outgassing Chevy... windows up with no air circulation.

The United States is quite behind in putting an end to the egregious practice of allowing bromine chemicals in your foods. In 1990, the United Kingdom banned bromate in bread. In 1994, Canada did the same. Brazil recently outlawed bromide in flour products.

What's taking us so long? Another case of our government protecting big industry -- instead of protecting you.

Iodine Levels and Cancer Risk

Iodine levels have significantly dropped due to bromine exposure; declining consumption of iodized salt, eggs, fish, and sea vegetables; and soil depletion. In the U.S. population, there was a 50 percent reduction in urinary iodine excretion between 1970 and 1990.

What's this doing to our country's health?

The Japanese consume 89 times more iodine than Americans due to their daily consumption of sea vegetables, and they have reduced rates of many chronic diseases, including the lowest rates of cancer in the world. The RDA for iodine in the U.S. is a meager 150 mcg/day, which pales in comparison with the average daily intake of 13800 mcg/day for the Japanese.

There is a large body of evidence suggesting that low cancer rates in Japan are a result of their substantially higher iodine levels. Iodine has documented antioxidant and anti-proliferative properties.

A strong case can be made that your iodine RDA should be closer to what the Japanese consume daily, if breast cancer rates are any indication. Low iodine can lead to fibrocystic breast disease in women (density, lumps and bumps), hyperplasia, and atypical mammary tissue. Such fibrocystic changes in breast tissue have been shown to reverse in the presence of iodine supplementation after 3-4 months.

If you are interested in being tested for iodine deficiency, the urine iodine challenge test is the best way to assess your iodine level.

Bromine and Your Thyroid
Adding to the negative health effects of bromine, the damage to your thyroid health deserves special mention.

As stated in the first part of this article, bromine exposure depletes your body's iodine by competing with iodine receptors. Iodine is crucial for thyroid function. Without iodine, your thyroid gland would be completely unable to produce thyroid hormone.

Even the names of the different forms of thyroid hormone reflect the number of iodine molecules attached -- T4 has four attached iodine molecules, and T3 (the biologically active form of the hormone) has three--showing what an important part iodine plays in thyroid biochemistry.

Hypothyroidism is far more prevalent than once thought in the U.S. The latest estimates are that 13 million Americans have hypothyroidism, but the actual numbers are probably higher. Some experts claim that 10 to40 percent of Americans have suboptimal thyroid function.

Many of these folks may actually have nothing wrong with their thyroid gland at all -- they may just be suffering from iodine deficiency.

Seven Tips for Avoiding Bromine and Optimizing Iodine

Trying to avoid bromine is like trying to avoid air pollution -- all you can do is minimize your exposure. That said, here are a few things you can do to minimize your risk:

1. Eat organic as often as possible. Wash all produce thoroughly. This will minimize your pesticide exposure.

2. Avoid eating or drinking from (or storing food and water in) plastic containers. Use glass and safe ceramic vessels.

3. Look for organic whole-grain breads and flour. Grind you own grain, if possible. Look for the "no bromine" or "bromine-free" label on commercial baked goods.

4. Avoid sodas. Drink natural, filtered water instead.

5. If you own a hot tub, look into an ozone purification system. Such systems make it possible to keep the water clean with minimal chemical treatments.

6. Look for personal care products that are as chemical-free as possible. Remember -- anything going on you, goes in you.

7. When in a car or a building, open windows as often as possible, preferably on opposing sides of the space for cross ventilation. Utilize fans to circulate the air. Chemical pollutants are much higher inside buildings (and cars) than outside.

Avoid Unfermented Soy
Another major contributor to thyroid dysfunction that I did not discuss above is unfermented soy. Soy isoflavones can wreak havoc on your thyroid.

Kaayla Daniel's groundbreaking book, The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food is a powerful exposé that reveals the truth about the soy myths that have infiltrated our culture.

It's ironic that soy has become so accepted as a health food when, as Dr. Daniel states, thousands of studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive distress, immune-system breakdown, thyroid- and hormonal dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders and infertility--even cancer and heart disease.

So if you want to keep your thyroid healthy, you'll definitely want to avoid unfermented soy products of all kinds, including soy milk.

A 2008 paper by Bernard A. Eskin MD showed that Iodine actually altered gene expression in breast cancer cells, inducing programmed cell death. A 2003 study by Ling Zhang ahowed that molecular Iodine caused lung cancer cells to undergo programmed cell death (apoptosis). These lung cancer cells had been genetically modified to increase iodine uptake Interestingly, a 1993 case report describes spontaneous remission of lung cancer in a patient incidentally treated with Amiodorone which contains iodine (about 9 mg per day) In Conclusion, Current Iodine research calls for use of molecular Iodine for all patients with breast cancer. Further research on Iodine as cancer chemotherapy should receive top priority for NIH funding.

We are eating many things we dont even know what it is, my brother was a chemist and was a great filter for most of the foods I ate as a child, he knew how toxic bromine was, when he made it in the lab at his High School, instead of praise for his accomplishment, the fire dept was called to dispose of what was one of the most toxic chemicals anyone can make, also flamable! Maybe instead of trying to control the sickness, and the money we pay to treat our sickness' , the governement could wake up and see what the world is doing about chemicals in everything we eat, wear and live in , its not going to get better i am afraid, its going to get worse. Unless someone cares a whole lot, nothing is going to change, its not. Suess, did not want to change the US, he wanted us to laugh at ourlseves to make the right choices, its still in our control, we can still choose to not buy or try, or be quiet about having to live like lab rats. thats my opinion.

Something quite different was on Huff less than two weeks ago:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/neal-barnard-md/settling-the-soy-controve_b_453966.html

The above article has (only) 15 scientific references.

Not a single google search result from reputable sources can confirm the authenticity of non-fermented soy claim.

Medline search cannot find a single scientific study (from any country, even those that are not under the influence of the "soy lobby") to support this claim.

When Americans stop being duped by both the agri-monoliths which poison our food supply and invent products that are not even food at all.... and by the "supplements " industry which are the other side of that coin (presenting stupid miracle products every month)- and demand pure REAL FOOD- pastured grass fed meats/eggs/dairy from local sources, organic plant based foods, and cut out SUGAR, they will have 90% less health problems, They will have energy, vitality, and exercise.

And for these people who are always commenting on "the poor", what are you doing about that? This diet I describe IS the diet of "the poor"- a simple local small farm diet. Hasn't anyone watched the movie Food Inc?

Why is anyone "scared"? All you have to do is seek out, find, and eat REAL FOOD. This does not mean shopping at Whole Foods Market, either- they sell a lot of garbage themselves, and their image does not represent the movement I am suggesting we take.

It all comes down to taking responsibility for your own health and well-being. It is foolish to believe everything you read and hear, no matter who the source is. Twenty years from now we may have a better understanding of the truth about soy and other "healthy foods," but for now I like to keep informed as best I can, and as mentioned earlier, take it with a grain of salt. Then, I can try to make the best choices I can for me. I feel sorry for those who take it to extremes, that can be exhausting. But the media, the marketers and everyone who has a stake in the "sale" of anything will forever bombard us with information and we have so many ways to receive it today that we are over-saturated. But... it allows us to digest what we feel will work for us and our lifestyle and hopefully we can then make healthier choices, without letting it control our lives, or happiness.

Is there an eighth tip for avoiding this new food-poison that doesn't have a high minimum income requirement? It truly feels as if every means by which to not be murdered by your own meals excludes the poor. Sounds like no big deal to most of the people who aren't flat broke, but sooner or later, nobody's going to be left to ring up your organic veggies at Whole Foods. Maybe we oughtta look out for these folks, too.

I would think switching to iodized salt would be a cheap way to get more iodine into your diet. Not that everybody would use it ... some people avoid salt. I don't, and I'm 81 and healthy, so I already use it. The other things seem cheap enough. I don't expect to grind my own flour, however.

Since Dr. Mercola is against vaccinations or artificial sweeteners, neither of which have been proven to be harmful to most people, I take what he writes with a grain of salt. Also, I'm not going to grind my own grain!

You are free to eat all the chemicals you want - ingest plenty of GMOs - and to be injected with every vaccination that comes along.

However, I would suggest avoiding any real research on these topics, as it may be dangerous to your opinion.

p.s. Your remark "I'm not going to grind my own grain!" .... that was a dead give away as to your lack of knowledge regarding Dr. Mercola's work.

Eating at McDonalds every day has never been "proven" to be detrimental to ones health but I wouldn't do it. There is no money in studying natural remedies to illnesses or the study of environmental factors that cause illness....and that's what's wrong with capitalism and health! If there's no money in it it won't be studied.

"Eating at McDonalds every day has never been "proven" to be detrimental to ones health "

it actually has. We know what is contained in the food at McDonald's and we know nutritionally what the things in this food do to the body. Dietitians therefore can and do say with a very high degree of accuracy that eating at McDonalds every day is detrimental to health.

i cannot beleive i found this article, just two weeks ago i had a bout of total lazyness for a whole week it so that i couldnt stay up from the couch and very sleepy i do remember too being a little bit dissy while cooking and also the loss of appetite wich i tought it wasnt so bad , i thought finally im gonna loose some weight, but at all that i dint pay much attention i tought maybe im just fighting off a weird virus or something... and now that i foung this article i think i know what has been happening all along, like three months ago i started liking squirt alot , that after hearing my sister saying that a doctor had told her that flavor soda wasnt as bad as the dark colas like coca cola and i guess that includes dr pepper so i started buying the sprite and the citrus ones and i fell in love with squirt so i had not been buying anything but squirt for about three months about a litter for the whole family everyday. so i decided to look for thyroid issues in the web till i came up on this article wow people do perish for the lack of knowledge, im certainly starting to be a true beleiver of processed foods , what are we eating ??!! and so it turns out that its in our breads too, no more plastic cups for me.
10:28 PM on 03/05/2010
Here's what missing from this article: any actual numbers. If Bromine is/can be dangerous (which I believe) then, for the love of God, tell me how much of it is likely to be in these dangerous things! How much Bromine is in a Mountain Dew? How 'bout in a loaf of Pepperidge Farm Bread? How much would I have to ingest for it to be harmful to my thyroid? How much seaweed should I eat to counter the bromine I apparently ingest daily by sitting in a car? This article, unfortunately, is devoid of actual helpful information, and serves only to add things to the "be very afraid" list.

Well, when I can buy a loaf of fresh Italian bread that usually is too stale for me by the next day, it's probably pretty pure. But I just bought a loaf of fresh french bread 3 weeks ago & forgot I had it in the fridge.

When I took it out 3 weeks later, it was as soft as when I put it in. That means there's a lot of chemicals in there to keep it soft for that long.
11:23 PM on 03/05/2010
Umm... okay. I think that's what I meant when I said we were missing any actual numbers. Are those chemicals bad? How much of them is bad? Are they bad just because of a vague notion that chemicals are bad for you, or do we know what they are, how much of a specific substances is bad, and why?

In the interest of full disclosure, I buy organic food whenever feasible and I fully believe in doing so. But just saying something potentially dangerous, without saying HOW MUCH of it is bad for you and how to counteract it, is useless.

Go back and look at the article again - Pepperidge Farms is one of the commercial companies to use unbromated flour. If countries are banning bromides, then perhaps it's a good bet that any and all are to be avoided. These companies obviously know of the dangers from this chemical and still have no problem using it against our better health. That being the case, I see no reason why I need to keep giving my business and $$$ to them. I will be switching to Pepperidge Farms and doing my own research on which other companies I should support since they seem to be looking out for the best interests of their customers.
11:22 AM on 03/09/2010
You're missing the point. There are NO NUMBERS here! How much bromine is bad? Do you know? Can it be measured in liters, ounces, grams, parts-per-million? How many "sea-vegetables" do I need to counter the harmful effects? I'm assuming if "countries are banning it" then they have done this research and everyone here was just too lazy to post it. Can you provide links? (or are you making radical life changes just based on some blogger's say-so)

Really- I can see all things in moderation, but this obscession some people have of trying to control everything they eat or encounter gets crazy. The japanese have one of the highest stomach cancer rates in the world due to their diet. They also ingest enormous quantities of salt. I have 2 relatives who I call lifetime members of the "Cure of the Month Club". Every month it's something new- no plastic containers, resveratrol, powdered artichoke tablets, soy protein drinks, acai berry, the list is endless and quite frankly, at the age of 55, it all just seems a bit silly. Maybe the rest of you want to live to be a 100- not me, I've seen too many people in their 90's and 100's and they tell me" you don't want to live to be as old as I am, it's no fun and it's downright painful most days".
05:19 PM on 03/05/2010
I think I'm a member of the cure of the month club. I have an entire cabinet full of supplements. I'll take a new one for a while, get bored with it, then move on to a new miracle. My latest miracle is GliSODin. I love it! Thing is, I don't really want to live forever, I just want to get rid of my prematurely gray hair.
06:03 PM on 03/05/2010
@Suzie1-At least you have a great sense of humor with it! I know what you mean about that gray hair-I'm a natural redhead and it's about 1/2 red and 1/2 gray. I'm waiting for it to turn all gray so I can stop dying it every 4 weeks! My relatives really have nooo sense of humor about this-and what drives the rest of us nuts is that they say the same thing for every cure "I have so much more energy, my skin is clear and glowing, my hair is thicker, etc" and then they buy a small fortunes worth of it and mail it to all of us! Arrrggghhh!!!

The salt/stomach-cancer “link” is a myth that arose from lame-brained perception of a “statistic” that many stomach-cancer victims ingest salt more than do non-victims. That statistic means NOTHING — merely begs questions, like: What is each victim's total diet versus each non-victim's total diet? What is the lifestyle of each? Which ones smoke? Which drink much alcohol or very acidic food?

Japanese men suffer stomach cancer about 60% more than do Japanese women — irrespective of salt-intake. So, another question is the relation of stomach cancer & genetics, hormones, and all biochemistry & physiology that hormones affect.

Stomach cancer occurs much more among people who eat meat, fowl, smoked & grilled foods, very acidic foods, alcohol, and cheese. Such people tend to consume much salt, but that fact signifies NOTHING. Among those who eat much whole grain, vegetable matter, and fish/shellfish but very little or no meat, fowl, smoked or grilled foods, alcohol, very acidic food, or cheese, stomach cancer is rare IRRESPECTIVE OF SALT-INTAKE.

Before 1920, Japanese ate virtually no meat, fowl, or dairy but much grain, vegetable matter, seaweed, fish/shellfish, AND MUCH SALT. Cancers were rare, except stomach cancer. In the 1970s, research showed the culprit was using asbestos-bearing rock to grind ingredients of miso & soy sauce.

Okinawans are, by far, the healthiest people & NOT stomach-cancer victims. They eat mostly grain, vegetable matter, seaweed, fish/shellfish, AND much salt, but virtually no meat, fowl, or dairy.

I read the entire article so I am conscious of the potential danger posed by external applications of bromines. I swam for ten years. For the last for years, I swam in a Bromine regulated pool. In retrospect, the rashes and problems that seemed so mysterious could have been due to Bromine exposure and I expect training as hard as we did for the length of time that we did lead to a high absorption through the skin. Then there was whatever we breathed in through the vaporized water of the indoor aquatic facility. My question is how long could a Bromine dominance System persist?
Thanks,

Not sure if has been mentioned already, but I read that potassium bromate has been banned from use in the food industry in Europe and even China! What a great job the FDA is doing!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_bromate

'Potassium bromate has been banned from use in food products in Europe, as well as the United Kingdom in 1990, and Canada in 1994, and most other countries. It was banned in Sri Lanka in 2001[3] and China in 2005. It is also banned in Nigeria, Brazil and Peru.
In the United States, it has not been banned. The FDA sanctioned the use of bromate before the Delaney clause of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act went into effect in 1958 — which bans carcinogenic substances — so that it is more difficult for it to now be banned. Instead, since 1991 the FDA has urged bakers to voluntarily stop using it. In California a warning label is required when bromated flour is used.'

Don't want to sound like a broken record BUT the reason the US does not
ban toxic products, whether it be food products, environmental products, etc.
is because we worship the almighty $$$$$. PROFITS are Sacrosanct in our
free market society. Anything that jeopardizes PROFITS is quickly hushed up
or discredited and we never hear about it until it reaches catastrophic proportions.
